Characterization of Sorolla's gouache pigments by means of spectroscopic techniques
2016
Abstract This paper presents the characterization of the Joaquin Sorolla's gouache sketches for the oil on canvas series “Vision of Spain” commissioned by A. M. Huntington to decorate the library of the Hispanic Society of America in New York. The analyses were focused on the identification of the elemental composition of the gouache pigments by means of portable EDXRF spectrometry in a non-destructive mode. Additionally, SEM-EDX and FTIR analyses of a selected set of micro-samples were carried out to identify completely the pigments, the paint technique and the binding media. The obtained results have confirmed the identification of lead and zinc white, vermillion, earth pigments, ochre, z…
In this paper, we analyze an unpublishe…
We analyze works of art, also unpublished, related to the Franciscan patronage of the Upper Belice Corleonese and the Sosio Valley by publishing documents that emerged during the research.
Complete karyotype characterization of the K562 cell line by combined application of G-banding, multiplex-fluorescence in situ hybridization, fluores…
2001
This study combines conventional cytogenetics, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), multiplex-FISH and comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). In applying this multimodal approach on the human leukemia cell line K562, the chromosome composition was refined in detail and compared with data from the literature. A hypotriploid karyotype with a modal chromosome number of 67, and 21 unique marker chromosomes were identified. The classification of six markers was identical to published data and the composition of five further markers from the literature could be fully clarified for the first time. The composition of another five markers, which have been interpreted in divergent ways in dif…
Genetic aspects in hominid evolution
2000
Genomic comparison between apes and humans have made important contributions to our understanding of human evolution. The modern period of karyological comparisons between humans and other primates began about forty years ago and has been marked by a series of technical revolutions. In the 1960s pioneering genetic and chromosomal comparisons of human and great apes suggested, as had Darwin a century before, that our closest relative were the African apes. Early immunological analyses placed human/apes divergence at about five million year ago. Acceptance of man’s late divergence from the African apes was delayed by the scarcity of paleontological evidence coupled with a fallacious Asiatic o…
The impact of arthropods on fungal community structure in Lascaux Cave
2009
Aims: To determine the major components of the fungal population present in Lascaux Cave, France. The ceiling, walls, sediments and soil were colonized by Fusarium solani in 2001 and later, in 2006, black stains appeared. However, the origin of the successive fungal invasions is unknown as well as the ecology of the cave. Methods and Results: The primers nu-SSU-0817F and nu-SSU-1536R were used for the direct amplification of fungal 18S-rDNA sequences from 11 samples. A total of 607 clones were retrieved. Eight out of the ten most abundant phylotypes corresponded to fungi associated with arthropods and represented about 50% of the clones. Conclusions: Entomophilous fungi play an important ro…

Le patrie di Guttuso
2021
Thirty-five years after the death of Renato Guttuso, an author who occupies a prominent place in the panorama …
Conservation state of two paintings in the Santa Margherita cliff cave: role of the environment and of the microbial community
2021
Abstract The conservation of ancient paintings sited in humid environments is an actual challenge for restorers, because it needs the knowledge of the materials the paintings are made up and of their interaction with a peculiar surrounding environment; thus, tailored procedures and strategies aimed at restoring and preserving paintings are necessary. The Santa Margherita’s cave in Castellammare del Golfo (Trapani, Italy) is a natural cave, containing the remains of paintings, in a poor state of conservation, belonging to an ancient church dated back to the Middle Age. The present manuscript reports the monitoring of environmental conditions (i.e., temperature and humidity) in a full year as…
Tra mito e rito: aspetti della cultura figurativa imerese nel tardo V secolo a.C.
2015
This study revisiting finds with figural decoration from early excavations of the residential area of the town of Himera has sparked a new approach to reconstructing the figural repertoire, mythographic heritage and spectrum of ritual and sacred practices wihch must have characterised this colonial city before its destruction at the end of the 5th century B.C. The author has studied, in particular, various clay arulae and the figural decoration on vases painted by the Himera Painter, which were used in the ritual life of the domestic quarters of the town and whose subject matter appears to be derived exclusively from the sagas of Thessaly and Boeotia. The main theme of the illustrated myths…
