Abstract A new two-dimensional (2D) thiocyanato-bridged cobalt(II) network formulated as [LCo2(NCS)2]n (1), has been synthesized with the Schiff base ligand N,N′-bis(3-methoxysalicylidenimino)-1,3-diaminopropane (H2L) and thiocyanate anions. This novel layered compound has been completely characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV–Vis spectroscopy and the structure has been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The structure of 1 consists of a doubly phenoxo-bridged dimer comprising two different cobalt(II) centers with different coordination geometries (octahedral and tetrahedral). ESR, ENDOR and TRIPLE resonance studies on radical reactions of 1,4-benzoquinone and 1,4-hydroquinone in alkaline methanol and liquid ammonia

The relative signs and absolute values of the hyperfine coupling constants of different methoxy-1,4-benzoquinones were measured by ESR, ENDOR and TRIPLE resonance spectroscopy. Reactions of 1,4-benzoquinone and 1,4-hydroquinone with methanol took place in alkaline methanol, giving rise to methoxy-substituted 1,4-benzoquinones. The same substitution reaction occurred in a mixture of ammonia and methanol. The reactions depended on temperature and the alkali concentration. Coupling constants were assigned by the modified additivity relationship method. An extremely small line width of 0.014 G was measured in the ESR spectrum of deuterated 2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoquinone.

The dinuclear copper(II) complexes {[Cu2(1,3-tpbd)(H2O)(OAc)2](ClO4)2}0.23{[Cu2(1,3-tpbd)(H2O)2(OAc)](ClO4)3}0.77·0.77H2O (1), [Cu2(1,3-tpbd)(H2O)2(OAc)2](ClO4)2·2H2O (2), and the tetranuclear copper(II) complex [Cu4(1,3-tpbd)2(H2O)2(SO4)4]·8H2O (3) {1,3-tpbd = 1,3-bis[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino]benzene} were synthesised and structurally characterised by X-ray diffraction. Variable-temperature (2.0−290 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements on these complexes as well as on the dinuclear copper(II) complex [Cu2(1,3-tpbd)(H2O)2(ClO4)3]ClO4 (4) (whose structure was published earlier) were performed. This paper reports the preliminary results obtained by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements on films of IRGANOX® 1076 phenols with and without low content (5% by weight) of gadolinium oxide (Gd2O3) exposed in the thermal column of the Triga Mark II reactor of LENA (Laboratorio Energia Nucleare Applicata) of Pavia (Italy). Thanks to their size, the phenolic films here presented are good devices for the dosimetry of beams with high dose gradient and which require accurate knowledge of the precise dose delivered. β-ray irradiation effects on silica nanoparticles

By electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, we examine the amplitude of the signal typically due to a combination of NBOHC (Non Bridging Hole Center) and POR (Peroxy Radical) defects induced by β-ray irradiation (from 1.2 to 1200 MGy) in silica nanoparticles with diameter ranging from 7 to 20 nm. Our data indicate that the signal line-shapes recorded at different doses is quite independent from the particles sizes and from the dose. Furthermore, for each considered nanoparticles size, the concentration of defects is also almost constant with respect to dose, and it does not change significantly if measured after 2 or 9 months from the irradiation. Abstract Influences of oxygen-deficiency on radiation properties of high-purity, low-OH fused silica were studied. It is found that thermostimulated luminescence (TSL) peaks are different for photo (7.7 eV) and X-ray excitation at 77 K. X-ray excitation produces TSL peaks at 125 and 170 K corresponding to the anneal temperatures of two types of self-trapped holes centers STH2 and STH1, respectively, detected by electron spin resonance (ESR). Oxygen-deficiency apparently increases the number of electron traps, stabilizing a larger number of STHs in the continuous defect-free silica network than is observed in similarly X-irradiated stoichiometric silica glasses. Tricarbonylchloro-rhenium(i) (1-4) and catecholato-platinum(ii) complexes (6, 7) of diimine ligands bearing phenol and O-protected phenol substituents have been prepared and fully characterised including single crystal structure analyses of 1, 4 and 7. The redox behaviour of the catecholato platinum(ii) complexes 6 and 7 has been probed by cyclic voltammetry, preparative oxidation and EPR spectroscopy (6˙(+), 7˙(+)). Influence of neutron and gamma-ray irradiations on rad-hard optical fiber

We investigated point defects induced in rad-hard Fluorine-doped optical fibers using both a mixed source of neutrons (fluences from 1015 to 1017 n/cm2) and γ-rays (doses from 0.02 to 2 MGy) and by a γ-ray source (dose up to 10 MGy). By combining several complementary spectroscopic techniques such as radiation-induced attenuation, confocal micro-luminescence, time-resolved photo-luminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance, we evidenced intrinsic and hydrogen-related defects. The comparison between the two irradiation sources highlights close similarities among the spectroscopic properties of the induced defects and the linear correlation of their concentration up to 1016 n/cm2.
