Backward second-harmonic generation of near infrared picosecond pulses

We report on backward second-harmonic generation using picosecond laser pulses in congruent lithium niobate with 3.2 µm periodic poling. By tuning both the pump wavelength and the sample temperature, we observed three resonant peaks in the range 1530-1730 nm, corresponding to 16th, 17th and 18th quasi-phase-matching orders, respectively. A maximum conversion efficiency of 0.475% was achieved at the 16th order with a 10 kW peak pump power. The latter is the highest conversion reported in bulk to date, for the backward configuration, with an improvement greater than 50% with respect to those previously achieved with nanosecond pulses for the same order of resonance.

Vengono presentati i risultati del 29°anno della rete di prove di confronto tra ibridi di sorgo da granella condotte nel 2012 1n due località italiane del Centro-nord ed in due del del Centro-sud. Nonostante l'andamento climatico particolarmente sfavorevole, alcuni ibridi hanno raggiunto produzioni areiche di sicuro interesse.

Quantile regression (QR) has gained popularity during the last decades, and is now considered a standard method by applied statisticians and practitioners in various fields. In this work, we applied QR to investigate climate change by analysing historical temperatures in the Arctic Circle. This approach proved very flexible and allowed to investigate the tails of the distribution, that correspond to extreme events. The presence of quantile crossing, however, prevented using the fitted model for prediction and extrapolation. Quantile regression is widely used to estimate conditional quantiles of an outcome variable of interest given covariates. This method can estimate one quantile at a time without imposing any constraints on the quantile process other than the linear combination of covariates and parameters specified by the regression model. While this is a flexible modeling tool, it generally yields erratic estimates of conditional quantiles and regression coefficients. AbstractThe causal relationship between habitual loading and adaptive response in bone morphology is commonly explored by analysing the spatial distribution of mechanically relevant features. In this study, 3D distribution of features in the proximal femur of 91 female athletes (5 exercise loading groups representing habitual loading) is contrasted with 20 controls. A femur specific Ricci-flow based conformal mapping procedure was developed for establishing correspondence among the periosteal surfaces.
