Assessment of Granger causality by nonlinear model identification: application to short-term cardiovascular variability.

2007

A method for assessing Granger causal relationships in bivariate time series, based on nonlinear autoregressive (NAR) and nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) models is presented. The method evaluates bilateral interactions between two time series by quantifying the predictability improvement (PI) of the output time series when the dynamics associated with the input time series are included, i.e., moving from NAR to NARX prediction. The NARX model identification was performed by the optimal parameter search (OPS) algorithm, and its results were compared to the least-squares method to determine the most appropriate method to be used for experimental data. The statistical significance of…

All-Optical Fiber Hanbury Brown & Twiss Interferometer to study 1300 nm single photon emission of a metamorphic InAs Quantum Dot

2016

[EN] New optical fiber based spectroscopic tools open the possibility to develop more robust and efficient characterization experiments. Spectral filtering and light reflection have been used to produce compact and versatile fiber based optical cavities and sensors. Moreover, these technologies would be also suitable to study N-photon correlations, where high collection efficiency and frequency tunability is desirable. We demonstrated single photon emission of a single quantum dot emitting at 1300 nm, using a Fiber Bragg Grating for wavelength filtering and InGaAs Avalanche Photodiodes operated in Geiger mode for single photon detection. As we do not observe any significant fine structure s…

Enhanced supercontinuum generation in tapered tellurite suspended core fiber

2015

Abstract We demonstrate 400-THz (0.6–3.3 µm) bandwidth infrared supercontinuum generation in a 10 cm-long tapered tellurite suspended core fiber pumped by nJ-level 200-fs pulses from an optical parametric oscillator. The increased nonlinearity and dispersion engineering extended by the moderate reduction of the fiber core size are exploited for supercontinuum optimization on both frequency edges (i.e., 155-THz overall gain), while keeping efficient power coupling into the untapered fiber input. The remaining limitation of supercontinuum bandwidth is related to the presence of the high absorption beyond 3 µm whereas spectral broadening is expected to fully cover the glass transmission window…

Feasibility of Linear Parametric Estimation of Dynamic Information Measures to assess Physiological Stress from Short-Term Cardiovascular Variability

2021

Extensive efforts have been recently devoted to implement fast and reliable algorithms capable of assessing the physiological response of the organism to physiological stress. In this study, we propose the comparison between model-free and linear parametric methods as regards their ability to detect alterations in the dynamics and in the complexity of cardiovascular and respiratory variability evoked by postural and mental stress. Dynamic entropy (DE) and information storage (IS) measures were calculated on three physiological time-series, i.e. heart period, respiratory volume and systolic arterial pressure, on 61 healthy subjects monitored in resting conditions as well as during head-up ti…

Four-wave mixing and vacuum squeezing in polariton microcavities

2017

In a recent paper [1] it has been shown how a bichromatic fast driving of optomechanical (optical domain) and superconducting circuit systems (microwave domain), operating in a limit where they present a non-linear Kerr-type interaction, can give rise to very strong vacuum squeezing. The driving with two close frequencies of a Kerr cavity changes the usual bistability bifurcation behaviour that takes place under monochromatic driving, into a degenerate four-wave mixing bifurcation, where a phase-bistable component starts oscillating spontaneously at a frequency that lies halfway between the two driving frequencies [2]. This resembles the physics of the optical parametric oscillator threshol…

PCM Thermal Energy Storage in Buildings: Experimental Study and Applications

2015

Abstract The study aims at analyzing the performance of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) in residential housing for different climates. This paper presents the results of an experiment performed in the Concordia University Solar Simulator and Environmental Chamber research facility (SSEC, Montreal, Canada). PCM boards were embedded on the back wall of a test hut placedin the climatic chamber. Several experiments were performed to explore the potential for verification of the proposed analysis and to produce enough data to perform model calibrations. Results show a strong increase in the apparent thermal inertia of the room allowing for a reduction in daily temperature fluctuations in the test …

Estimation of ordered response models with sample selection

2011

We introduce two new Stata commands for the estimation of an ordered response model with sample selection. The opsel command uses a standard maximum-likelihood approach to fit a parametric specification of the model where errors are assumed to follow a bivariate Gaussian distribution. The snpopsel command uses the semi-nonparametric approach of Gallant and Nychka (1987, Econometrica 55: 363–390) to fit a semiparametric specification of the model where the bivariate density function of the errors is approximated by a Hermite polynomial expansion. The snpopsel command extends the set of Stata routines for semi-nonparametric estimation of discrete response models. Compared to the other semi-n…

Modeling temporal treatment effects with zero inflated semi-parametric regression models: The case of local development policies in France

2017

International audience; A semi-parametric approach is proposed to estimate the variation along time of the effects of two distinct public policies that were devoted to boost rural development in France over a similar period of time. At a micro data level, it is often observed that the dependent variable, such as local employment, does not vary along time, so that we face a kind of zero inflated phenomenon that cannot be dealt with a continuous response model. We introduce a conditional mixture model which combines a mass at zero and a continuous response. The suggested zero inflated semi-parametric statistical approach relies on the flexibility and modularity of additive models with the abi…
