The use of maiolica bricks as artefact for surface decoration is widespread both in monumental and ordinary architectures in the Mediterranean regions, harmonizing the local construction traditions with the Islamic influences. This study presents an in-depth analysis of examples of spires and domes in Sicily featuring earthenware maiolica cladding serving both as decoration and structural element. Due to the limited knowledge of these artefacts, incautious construction operations led to an alteration of their material and technical features, putting at risk a centuries-old heritage. The thesis provides a parametric analytical method for the analysis and design of power-split continuously variable transmissions, which represent the state of the art for heavy-duty vehicles and hybrid electric cars. The functioning of any driveline is described by mean of a simple set of kinematic parameters, regardless of the constructive scheme. The calculation of the control torques remains straightforward even when both inertial effects and mechanical losses are taken into account. Novel Narrow-Band Spectral Interference Filter with Very High Transmittance

We report a novel scheme to improve the effective transmission of a standard interference filter, and demonstrate over 97% passband transmission. Such high efficiency is critical for quantum information applications, e.g. high-efficiency single-photon generation utilizing parametric down-conversion. The scheme can also be modified to function with a tilted filter, thereby allowing tuning of the passband frequency. In addition, the tilted configuration creates an infinite number of consecutive reflections from and transmissions through the filter, further improving the net filter transmission. A type I optical parametric oscillator pumped by a Gaussian beam above threshold and tuned to its first transverse mode family is shown to yield a perfectly squeezed, empty Gauss-Hermite mode at any pumping level.
Quantum fluctuations in cavity solitons

Quantum fluctuations of degenerate optical parametric oscillators' cavity solitons (CS) are studied. We show that CSs are sources of perfectly squeezed light that exhibit photon fluctuations below the shot-noise level as well.

Optical parametric oscillators (OPO) have been extensively used in the continuous variable quantum optics community as a resource to produce non-classical states of light, including squeezed states or entangled beams. They have been widely studied, theoretically and experimentally, in the single mode case, and have found many applications to quantum information protocols and high sensitivity optical measurements. However, as the complexity of quantum information protocols increases, the need for multiplexed quantum channels has emerged, which require the use of multimode non-classical states of light.
Parametric self-trapping in the presence of randomized quasi phase matching

We report on experimental evidence of parametric spatial solitons in a quadratic crystal with randomized periodic ferroelectric poling. Two-color self-focusing via quadratic cascading overcomes the diffractive nature of both fundamental and frequency-doubled beams.
Integrated frequency shifter in periodically poled lithium tantalate waveguide

A frequency shifting device is fabricated and tested in a ferroelectric waveguide in a low-photorefractivity crystal. Periodic poling for quasi-phase-matching and channels for operation in the near-infrared C-band were obtained in congruent lithium tantalate, demonstrating for the first time both wave confinement and two-stage parametric conversion in such waveguides.
Laser driven parametric amplification in the xuv and soft-x-ray spectral range

We present the first experimental realization of a new x-ray laser scheme based on strong-field parametric amplification of high-order harmonic radiation. With a simple semi-classical model, we can identify the most important experimental parameters, the spectral range and the small signal gain in gases. Using a single amplifier stage a small signal gain of 8000 has been obtained in Argon for the spectral range of 40-50 eV, using 350 fs, 7 mJ pulses at 1.05 µm. In Helium, we observed a small signal gain of 280 around 300 eV using 6 fs, 1.5 mJ pulses at 800 nm.
