Early DEtection of wEaring off in Parkinson disease: The DEEP study
2014
Assessing the frequency of Wearing-Off (WO) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, and its impact on Quality of Life (QoL). METHODS: Consecutive ambulatory patients, who were on dopaminergic treatment for ≥ 1 year, were included in this multicentre, observational cross-sectional study. In a single visit, WO was diagnosed based on neurologist assessment as well as using the validated Italian version of a patient self-rated 19-question Wearing-Off Questionnaire (WOQ-19); WO was defined for scores ≥ 2. QoL was evaluated by the 8-item Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-8). RESULTS: 617 subjects were included, with a mean anti-Parkinson treatment duration of 6.6 ± 4.6 years, 87.2% were on lev…
The Resilience of the Valley of Temples among natural calamities and social disasters
2017
Preservation of the cultural heritage, intended as common patrimony, is a cultural achievement that in territories like Sicily, which has often suffered the lack of legality, is the result of a difficult process of implementation. Cultural heritage is not ruined exclusively by natural calamities: damages caused by social and cultural disasters may at times be even more devastating. The archeological park of Agrigento, born in 1947 after a natural disaster (a landslide in 1944), hides a history of a half century of battles between illegal land use and legislative measures to protect a cultural heritage recognized worldwide. After fifty years of attacks against the archaeological park, a slow…
A European Observational Study to Evaluate the Safety and the Effectiveness of Safinamide in Routine Clinical Practice: The SYNAPSES Trial
2021
Background: Safinamide modulates both dopaminergic and glutamatergic systems with positive effects on motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD). The drug utilization study SYNAPSES was designed to investigate the use of safinamide in routine clinical practice, as recommended by the European Medicines Agency. Objective: To describe the occurrence of adverse events in PD patients treated with safinamide in real-life conditions. Methods: The SYNAPSES trial is an observational, European, multicenter, retrospective-prospective cohort study. Patients were followed up to 12 months with analyses performed in the overall population and in patients aged >75 years, with relevant comorbi…
NEUROPROTECTIVE ACTION OF RESVERATROL AGAINST OXIDATIVE STRESS AND IN THE MOUSE MODEL OF PARKINSON'S DISEASE.
2008
Resveratrol increases DAT expression levels in the striatum of female mouse and its effect is mediated by estrogen receptors
2010
Resveratrol (3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene, RSV), a phytoalexins with a stilbene skeleton, exhibits a wide range of biological actions that includes neuroprotective effect against neurodegenerative diseases. In a previous study on RSV neuroprotective effects in mouse Parkinson’s model, we unexpectedly observed an upregulation of DAT in the striatum of female mice treated with RSV. Here we aimed to study in depth the effect of RSV on DAT expression, and additionally to verify the potential involvement of estrogen receptor activation by RSV, according with its striking similarity to the synthetic estrogen diethylstilbestrol. Daily repeated injection of RSV (20 mg/kg i.p.) for four days led, eight…
Protected areas host important remnants of marine turtle nesting stocks in the Dominican Republic
2012
AbstractNesting by marine turtles in the Caribbean has declined considerably, mainly because of human exploitation, but there has previously been no monitoring in the Dominican Republic. We present the first detailed assessment of the status of marine turtle nesting in the country, based on surveys during 2006–2010. Nesting populations of hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata and leatherback turtle Dermochelys coriacea are of regional importance and the green turtle Chelonia mydas is still present, although nesting in low numbers. The two main nesting sites are within protected areas: the Jaragua National Park in the south-west, important for leatherback turtles (mean of 126 nests per season), a…
The Role of Regional Policies in Promoting Networking and Innovative Activity: Evidence from Small Finnish High-tech Firms
2010
The success of high-technology firms is strongly dependent on their innovation capacity and network relationships. There is a growing recognition that few firms are able to innovate in isolation. Cooperation can provide access to a complementary knowledge base and resources, and speed up the innovation process of firms. Regional developers are criticized for their inadequate ability to integrate themselves into the regional networks and innovation processes of firms and their ability to determine firms' needs for innovation and networking. The research topic of this study concentrates on the possibilities of regional developers of influencing the operational environment of high-tech firms t…

Parking Pricing for a Sustainable Transport System
2014
Abstract The purpose of this study has been the develop of a model for designing an efficient parking pricing policy. The aim is an intelligent control and management system of parking pricing integrated with a redefinition of the circulation scheme for a limited traffic zone in the Central Business District (CBD) of Palermo. The transport demand over the entire area of the town has been studied in order to design various parking pricing scenarios with the application of an additional cost on parking inside the selected area of the CBD. This area attracts most of the private vehicular traffic and it is characterized by university faculties, schools, hospitals, offices and commercial areas. …
A Simulation Analysis for Assessing the Reliability of AC/DC Hybrid Microgrids - Part I: Underground Station and Car Parking
2021
This paper reports the results of a simulation study with the aim of evaluating the capability of two portions of a hybrid AC/DC MV/LV network of maintaining their operation in off-grid mode during the loss of the main AC grid due to a failure. In particular, the study aims to verify, in the case of islanded operation of the two microgrids, the continuity of the electricity service by exploiting the local generation plants, Energy Storage Systems (ESSs), and other flexible resources managed by suitable algorithms in different energy scenarios. The analysis was carried out considering two microgrids: an underground station and a car parking with Electric Vehicles (EVs). For assessing the per…
