Imaging-guided interventions modulating portal venous flow: Evidence and controversies
2021
Portal hypertension is defined by an increase in the portosystemic venous gradient. In most cases, increased resistance to portal blood flow is the initial cause of elevated portal pressure. More than 90% of cases of portal hypertension are estimated to be due to advanced chronic liver disease or cirrhosis. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts, a non-pharmacological treatment for portal hypertension, involve the placement of a stent between the portal vein and the hepatic vein or inferior vena cava which helps bypass hepatic resistance. Portal hypertension may also be a result of extrahepatic portal vein thrombosis or compression. In these cases, percutaneous portal vein recanalis…
N- and O-methylation of sphingomyelin markedly affects its membrane properties and interactions with cholesterol
2011
We have prepared palmitoyl sphingomyelin (PSM) analogs in which either the 2-NH was methylated to NMe, the 3-OH was methylated to OMe, or both were methylated simultaneously. The aim of the study was to determine how such modifications in the membrane interfacial region of the molecules affected interlipid interactions in bilayer membranes. Measuring DPH anisotropy in vesicle membranes prepared from the SM analogs, we observed that methylation decreased gel-phase stability and increased fluid phase disorder, when compared to PSM. Methylation of the 2-NH had the largest effect on gel-phase instability (T(m), was lowered by similar to 7 degrees C). Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations sho…
Combined use of eddy covariance and sap flow techniques for partition of ET fluxes and water stress assessment in an irrigated olive orchard
2013
Correct estimation of crop actual transpiration plays a key-role in precision irrigation scheduling, since crop growth and yield are associated to the water passing through the crop. Objective of the work was to assess how the combined use of micro-meteorological techniques (eddy covariance, EC) and physiological measurements (sap flow, SF) allows a better comprehension of the processes involving in the Soil–Plant–Atmosphere continuum. To this aim, an experimental dataset of actual evapotranspiration, plant transpiration, and soil water content measurements was collected in an olive orchard during the midseason phenological period of 2009 and 2010. It was demonstrated that the joint use of …
The effect of saline water on Phillyrea angustifolia L. seedlings
2013
Water limitations in the Mediterranean areas are very common and the use of saline water for plant irrigation is becoming a necessity. Salinity generally affects plant growth and physiological processes, and can eventually lead to leaf injuries and plant death. For these reasons, the selection of salt tolerant species is a priority for landscaping purposes in the Mediterranean areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of saline water on Phillyrea angustifolia plant performance. Seventy-five rooted cuttings were grown in the greenhouse in 4-liter pots and irrigated for 5 months with saline water at different NaCl concentrations for two consecutive years. In 2010, 45 plant…
L'Illuminismo senza lumi di Leonardo Sciascia
2018
This work of political and cultural history highlights the context of the early sixties in which Leonardo Sciascia wrote The Council of Egypt, in particular the clear position and criticism of the writer in charge of the Sicilian region led by Silvio Milazzo and the publication de The Gattopardo of Tomasi di Lampedusa. Moreover, here the relationship between Sciascia and the new progressive Sicilian historiography of those years is rebuilt, its initial support and then abandonment; opting for a metaphorical historical paradigm of immobility and defeat.
Efficient image compression using directionlets
2007
Directionlets are built as basis functions of critically sampled perfect-reconstruction transforms with directional vanishing moments imposed along different directions. We combine the directionlets with the space-frequency quantization (SFQ) image compression method, originally based on the standard two-dimensional wavelet transform. We show that our new compression method outperforms the standard SFQ as well as the state-of-the-art image compression methods, such as SPIHT and JPEG-2000, in terms of the quality of compressed images, especially in a low-rate compression regime. We also show that the order of computational complexity remains the same, as compared to the complexity of the sta…
Ontogenetic trophic segregation between two threatened smooth-hound sharks in the Central Mediterranean Sea
2020
AbstractElasmobranchs are among the species most threatened by overfishing and a large body of evidence reports their decline around the world. As they are large predators occupying the highest levels of marine food webs, their removal can alter the trophic web dynamic through predatory release effects and trophic cascade. Suitable management of threatened shark species requires a good understanding of their behaviour and feeding ecology. In this study we provide one of the first assessments of the trophic ecology of the “vulnerable” smooth-hounds Mustelus mustelus and M. punctulatus in the Central Mediterranean Sea, based on stomach contents and stable isotope analyses. Ontogenetic diet ch…
Atomic-force microscopy imaging of plasma membranes purified from spinach leaves
2000
Summary: Plasma membranes purified from spinach leaves by aqueous two-phase partitioning were examined by atomic-force microscopy (AFM) in phosphate buffer, and details on their structure were reported at nanometric scale. Examination of the fresh membrane preparation deposited on mica revealed a complex organization of the surface. It appeared composed of a first layer of material, about 8 nm in thickness, that practically covered all the mica surface and on which stand structures highly heterogeneous in shape and size. High-resolution imaging showed that the surface of the first layer appeared relatively smooth in some regions, whereas different characteristic features were observed in ot…
Influence of losses partition criteria on power flow tracing
2012
The paper proposes a methodology for tracing active power flow which also considers power losses partition. It requires the partition of the active power losses in each line over different flow components. Then, the differences arising from the selection of different criteria for the allocation of the mutual terms (deriving from the non-linearity of losses) are investigated. Power flows tracing and losses allocation at each generator (or load) must be carried out simultaneously; therefore, a suitable order is required for the analysis of nodes and lines in a network. A procedure for the direct evaluation of all the components of the power flows and of the losses in the lines assigned to the…
The Power of the “Pursuit” Learning Paradigm in the Partitioning of Data
2019
Traditional Learning Automata (LA) work with the understanding that the actions are chosen purely based on the “state” in which the machine is. This modus operandus completely ignores any estimation of the Random Environment’s (RE’s) (specified as \(\mathbb {E}\)) reward/penalty probabilities. To take these into consideration, Estimator/Pursuit LA utilize “cheap” estimates of the Environment’s reward probabilities to make them converge by an order of magnitude faster. This concept is quite simply the following: Inexpensive estimates of the reward probabilities can be used to rank the actions. Thereafter, when the action probability vector has to be updated, it is done not on the basis of th…
