2021 revised algorithm for the management of knee osteoarthritis-the Chinese viewpoint.

2021

Abstract Aim The European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) algorithm for the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA) is available worldwide from 2014, but in 2019 an update was published. Based on this algorithm, a Working Group (WG), including ESCEO members and Chinese experts, wished to see how the new ESCEO algorithm was perceived by Chinese experts in knee OA and how it was integrated into their clinical practice. Methods A WG was held between members of the international ESCEO task force and a group of Chinese experts. Results Non-pharmacological approach should be combined with pharmacological interventions. …

2019 revised algorithm for the management of knee osteoarthritis: the Southeast Asian viewpoint

2021

Abstract Background Since 2014, the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO) algorithm for the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA) is available worldwide. Aim Based on this document, a Southeast Asia Working Group (SEAWG) wished to see how the new ESCEO algorithm developed in 2019 was perceived by Southeast Asian experts and how it was integrated into their clinical practice. Methods A SEAWG was set up between members of the international ESCEO task force and a group of Southeast Asian experts. Results Non-pharmacological management should always be combined with pharmacological management. In step 1, symptoma…

Recent patents and advances in hepatocyte-like cells differentiation by mesenchymal stem cells

2013

Chronic liver diseases constitute one of the main causes of death in western countries. Orthotopic liver transplantation still remains the final therapeutic approach to these diseases, but alternative therapeutic strategies are actively researched. Hepatocyte transplantation is considered a promising approach, even if this technique presents many limitations. These factors boosted the research for alternative cell sources to derive functional hepatocytes. In the last years, research on basic biology and differentiative ability of adult, embryonic and perinatal stem cells has constantly increased. The term "perinatal" indicates stem cell populations derived from foetal sources such as placen…

Pharmaceutical patents and the right to access to medicines in Central America

2020

Thrombosis, fracture, and percutaneous removal of a patent foramen ovale closure device 1 month after successful deployment

2010

Several different devices have been developed for the percutaneous closure of interatrial defects and patent foramen ovale. Although the implantation of these devices is both safe and effective, a number of complications, both in the early and the late follow-up, may occur. We describe a case of device fracture manifested early (1 month after implantation) with the formation of massive thrombosis on the right atrial disc. The patient was treated with anticoagulants and the device was percutaneously retrieved. Our images allowed early noninvasive therapy and emphasize the need for echocardiographic follow-up early after implantation. © 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Patents, Competition, and Firms’ Innovation Incentives

2014

This paper presents fresh evidence on the interaction between industrial property rights (patents) and competition, and their joint effect on firms’ innovation. We use panel data of Spanish manufacturing firms for 1990–2006, as well as external information on European Patent Office and US Patent Office patent counts. We construct a new synthetic measure of competition and estimate the impact of patents on this measure at the industry level. Then, the effect of industry-wide competition and patenting on firms’ innovation is estimated at the firm level. Our results suggest that patents reduce the level of competition in the industry, whereas the effect of competition on innovation varies with…

Evaluation of a Visual Tool for Early Patent Infringement Detection During Design

2019

Patent infringement detection usually implies research among documents in different forms, in both natural and unstructured language, often involving a lot of human resources and time. In order to ease this patent check process, we previously presented a visual tool to be used by designers themselves at any stage of the design process, providing them with useful and reliable information for deciding whether to steer their design away from potential patent infringements. In this work, we report on a usability study carried out on such a tool with 21 professional designers from industry in the field of mechanical engineering. The outcome of our study shows that our tool is very well accepted …

Competition and innovation with selective exit: an inverted-U shape relationship?

2017

This paper extends the approach of the inverted-U relationship between competition and innovation at the industry level introduced by Aghion and coauthors. We use data of Spanish manufacturing firms from the Survey of Business Strategies (ESEE) spanning 1990–2006, as well as external information on patents from the European Patent Office and US Patent Office. Instead of an inverted-U shape, we obtain an unambiguous positive relationship between competition and patents. To explain this positive relationship, we modify their theoretical model to introduce the possibility of inefficient firms facing the threat of exit when competition intensifies. The modified model may explain both a positive…

Patents, technological inputs and spillovers among regions

2009

This paper analyses the importance of different technological inputs (R&D and human capital) and different spillovers in explaining the differences in patenting among Spanish regions in the period 1986-2003. The analysis is based on the estimation of a knowledge production function. A region¿s own R&D activities and human capital are observed to have a positive significant effect on innovation output, measured by the number of patents. R&D spillovers weighted by the distance and the volume of trade flows between regions cause positive effects on a region¿s patents. However, distance matters more than the intensity of trade flows and the R&D spillover effects between regions are bounded: spi…
