Franz Kuhn, his contribution to anaesthesia and emergency medicine.

2001

Franz Kuhn (1866-1929), a German surgeon, made a significant practical and scientific contribution towards the development of modern anaesthesia and emergency medicine. He developed modern, scientifically based concepts in close correlation to practical inventions for every day use. All of his studies and developments were patient orientated and led to remarkable improvements in patient safety. Kuhn was a major protagonist of endotracheal intubation, perfected his flexo-metallic endotracheal tubes, worked on different techniques of intubating the trachea, applied positive pressure to the lungs during thoracic surgery and developed anaesthesia machines. In the early 20th century, he wrote se…

The use of nephrometry scoring systems can help urologists predict the risk of conversion to radical nephrectomy in patients scheduled for partial ne…

2019

Conversion to radical nephrectomy (RN) in patients scheduled for partial nephrectomy (PN) is an important outcome that should be strongly considered during the decision-making process and adequately discussed with patients during their preoperative counseling. This unplanned event could be due to severe intraoperative complications or oncologic reasons. Intraoperative suspicion of hilar and/or perirenal fat tissue involvement, peritumoral venous involvement, tumor multifocality and/or iatrogenic rupture of the tumor are the most common conditions threatening the oncological safety of the procedure.

Effect of implantation technique on outcomes in patients receiving bioresorbable scaffolds in various clinical scenarios

2021

ABSTRACT Introduction and objectives: The PSP (pre-dilation, sizing and post-dilation) score, derived from the GHOST-EU registry, has evaluated the relationship between the implantation technique of bioresorbable scaffolds and the clinical outcomes. The objective was to perform an external validation of the PSP technique and to determine its effect on adverse cardiac events in various clinical and anatomical scenarios. Methods: Data from the REPARA registry (2230 patients) were used for external validation, whereas a common database combining REPARA and GHOST-EU (3250 patients) data was used to evaluate the effect of PSP technique in various clinical and anatomical scenarios. PSP-1 and PSP-…

1043 Evaluation of Pediatric Testes After Surgery by Laser Doppler and White Light Spectroscopy

2012

Aim To evaluate testes after unilateral orchiopexy Laser Doppler and white light spectroscopy and compare microcirculation with contralaterat testis and healthy controls. Methods A combination of the laser Doppler (determination of blood flow) and white light spectroscopy (determination of oxygen saturation and hemoglobin amount) is used to determine microcirculation at two different depth levels non-invasively. Patients were recruited after unilateral orchiopexy. Controls were age-matched boys without relevant disease. Ethical approval was obtained. Results 99 patients were included after unilateral orchiopexy at the age of 3.5 years (+-2.9 years). 65% underwent surgery after their second …

La sinoviortesis radioisotópica en la artritis reumatoide. Estudio de 108 casos

2000

There are several therapeutic alternatives in the local treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA): intraarticular corticosteroids, chemical synoviorthesis, surgical synovectomy and synoviorthesis with radioisotopes. We present the results of an observational study on radioisotopic synoviorthesis carried out in the Valencian health care area from January 1989 to May 1997 which included 108 synoviortheses performed in 51 patients. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of radiosynoviorthesis in the treatment of RA which had not responded to conventional treatment. Good and moderate results were obtained in 76.2% of the cases, there being significant differences in the efficacy of syn…

Single Intravenous Dose Kinetics and Accumulation of Atenolol in Patients with Impaired Renal Function and on Hemodialysis

1980

The concentration of atenolol in plasma and urine was determined following an intravenous (i.v.) dose given to 17 hypertensive patients with a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) between 5 and 105 ml/min and in 4 patients on hemodialysis. In patients with normal renal function the mean half life of elimination was calculated to be 6.8 h. This value increased to a mean of 50.1 h in patients with a GFR below 10 ml/min. In patients on hemodialysis the half life of elimination was about 4 h. The elimination rate constants as well as the body and renal clearances of atenolol have a significant correlation with the GFR. Although accumulation of atenolol was observed, especially after multiple oral d…

Early Mortality in Patients with Multiple Myeloma Treated with Novel Agents - Analysis from Polish Myeloma Study Group

2020

Background Although the introduction of novel agents improved the survival outcomes in patients with multiple myeloma (MM), some patients died within one year (early mortality, EM) following diagnosis. In this study, we evaluated the EM rate, and investigated the risk factors associated with EM in MM patients. Aims In this study we investigated risk factors associated with EM in MM patients initially treated with novel-agent containing regimen. Methods We conducted a multicenter (15 Polish sites) retrospective study a cohort of symptomatic MM pts diagnosed between October 2006 and November 2019 and living < 365 days (d) after diagnosis. All pts were dead at the time of the analysis. …

Lateralization Effects on Cerebral Blood Flow in Patients With Unilateral Pulsatile Tinnitus Measured With Arterial Spin Labeling

2020

Purpose: To investigate cerebral blood flow (CBF) differences in patients with left- and right-sided pulsatile tinnitus (LPT and RPT) and healthy controls (HCs) to further explore the lateralization effects of PT using arterial spin labeling (ASL). Methods: ASL data from 21 RPT patients, 17 LPT patients and 21 HCs were reviewed. Voxel-wise analysis and region of interest analysis were performed to explore differences in CBF among the three groups. Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) score and tinnitus duration were obtained from each patient. Results: Voxel-wise analysis showed that the CBF of the left inferior parietal gyrus was increased in both RPT and LPT patients compared with HCs (P < 0…

Heart Rate Variability in Children and Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy—A Systematic Literature Review

2020

Cardiac autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). The aim of this study was to assess the existing literature on heart rate variability (HRV) in pediatric patients with CP and a special attention was paid to the compliance of the studies with the current HRV assessment and interpretation guidelines. A systematic review was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) databases searched for English language publications from 1996 to 2019 using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms “heart rate variability” and “cerebral palsy” in conjunction with additional inclusion criteria: studies limited to …

Effects of a Vibro-Tactile P300 Based Brain-Computer Interface on the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised in Patients With Disorders of Consciousness

2020

Persons diagnosed with disorders of consciousness (DOC) typically suffer from motor and cognitive disabilities. Recent research has shown that non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technology could help assess these patients’ cognitive functions and command following abilities. 20 DOC patients participated in the study and performed 10 vibro-tactile P300 BCI sessions over 10 days with 8–12 runs each day. Vibrotactile tactors were placed on the each patient’s left and right wrists and one foot. Patients were instructed, via earbuds, to concentrate and silently count vibrotactile pulses on either their left or right wrist that presented a target stimulus and to ignore …
