Molecular approaches in autoimmunity and ageing: potential implications for future therapies.

My researches during my PhD were mainly focused on two aspects. The first one, was to study molecular aspects potentially implicated in autoimmunity pathogenesis, in order to identify new potential risk factors useful as therapeutic target. To this end, we focused on two severe and wasting systemic autoimmune diseases: systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis. Background: T-cells expressing the KIR2DS2 activating receptor were found to be prevalent in the coronary culprit atherosclerotic plaque in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), suggesting a possible cytolytic activity against the endothelium of the plaque, leading to plaque rupture and in turn to superimposed thrombosis and sudden occlusion of the artery. The study of healthy human aging is important for shedding light on the molecular mechanisms behind aging to promote well-being and to possibly predict and/or avoid the development of age-related disorders such as atherosclerosis and diabetes. Herein, we have employed an untargeted mass spectrometry-based approach to study age-related protein changes in a healthy Sicilian plasma cohort including long-lived individuals. Polyamines and microbiota in bicuspid and tricuspid aortic valve aortopathy

Polyamines are small aliphatic cationic molecules synthesized via a highly regulated pathway and involved in general molecular and cellular phenomena. Both mammalian cells and microorganisms synthesize polyamines, and both sources may contribute to the presence of polyamines in the circulation. The dominant location for microorganisms within the body is the gut. Accordingly, the gut microbiota probably synthesizes most of the polyamines in the circulation in addition to those produced by the mammalian host cells. Impact of Prosthesis-Patient Mismatch after Mitral Valve Replacement

Background and aim of the study: The study aim was to determine the impact of prosthesis-patient mismatch (PPM) on early and late clinical outcomes, left atrial and ventricular remodeling, late tricuspid valve regurgitation and pulmonary hypertension (PH) in patients after mitral valve replacement (MVR). Methods: A total of 46 patients (mean age 66 ± 9.3 years) with mitral valve diseases and undergoing isolated MVR was enrolled in the study. Prognostic value of PCR, IL-6 and IL-10 serum levels in determining postoperative complications after geriatric surgery in diabetic patients

Background The onset of postoperative septic complications has been associated to serum levels of interleukin (IL) IL-6 and IL-10. [1,2]. We have extrapolated a diabetic group from a previous study to evaluate pre and postoperative profiles of some inflammatory markers (IL-6 , IL-10 and CRP). We related the data obtained to the onset of postoperative complications. Diabetic patients have been selected because of their high rate of post-operative complications, especially surgical wound infection.

First Report of Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus on Tomato Crops in Italy

In October 2018, virus-like symptoms were observed in four different greenhouses of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) in Ragusa province (Sicily, Italy). Symptoms consisted in mosaic, deformation, and necrosis on young leaves, and discoloration and deformations on young fruits. In total 40 symptomatic samples were collected (10 for each greenhouse).
