Behind screens : challenges and opportunities of participatory online peace education in Finland

This article discusses the challenges and opportunities of participatory online teaching and learning in higher education. It analyses an online peace education course taught during the Covid-19 pandemic in three Finnish universities between 2020–2021. The course explored fundamental mediation skills and practices of positive peace through participatory methods and applied drama. We show how the online setting affected students and teachers, by focusing on the challenges and opportunities for participatory pedagogy in an online environment. Kokopäiväpedagogiikka on noussut keskeiseksi toimintatavaksi suomalaisissa päiväkodeissa. Se on myös useissa paikallisissa varhaiskasvatussuunnitelmissa toiminnan lähtökohtana, vaikka käsitteen tieteellinen määrittely on kesken ja käytännön tulkinnat vaihtelevat. Ehkä juuri näiden syiden vuoksi aihe herättää paljon keskustelua ja kiinnostusta. Kokopäiväpedagogiikka onkin vielä toistaiseksi ennen kaikkea varhaiskasvatuksen arkisanastoa. This paper aims to discuss complexity as a key feature for understanding the role of science knowledge in environmental and health contexts—a central issue in Science|Environment|Health pedagogy. Complex systems are, in principle, not predictable. In different contexts, ephemeral mechanisms produce different, sometimes completely unexpected results. The art of decision-making in complex contexts is to take scientific knowledge into account but to interpret its meaning in terms of concrete complex contexts. The article concerns the role of communication skills needed in the work of the social pedagog. The authors depict how important are social skills, especially those related to communication, pedagogs’ and therapists’ work. The paper presents different concepts and views on the preparation and aptitudes they should have social pedagogs. Later in the article the authors describe some therapeutic skills such as: the skill of reacting, solicitude and acceptance, empathic understanding, the skill of observation, the skill of listening ora the skill of speaking, which are important in work.
