How Comprehensive School Students Perceive their Psychosocial School Environment

2010

The aim of this study was to describe students’ perceptions of their psychosocial school environment and to examine the associations between such perceptions and students’ perceived school performance. Our analyses were based on data from the Health Behaviour in School‐Aged Children 2006 study, involving responses by Finnish students from grades 7 and 9. The results indicated that students’ perceptions of their school environment were fairly positive, but that a remarkably large proportion of the students reported negative attitudes towards school. School engagement, school strain, and teacher‐student relations were found to be the most influential predictors in the psychosocial school envi…

We are the people and you are fake news: a social identity approach to populist citizens’ false consensus and hostile media perceptions

2018

This study aims to investigate the relationships between citizens’ populist attitudes, perceptions of public opinion, and perceptions of mainstream news media. Relying on social identity theory as an explanatory framework, this article argues that populist citizens assume that public opinion is congruent with their own opinion and that mainstream media reporting is hostile toward their own views. To date, only anecdotal evidence suggests that both assumptions are true. The relationships are investigated in a cross-sectional survey with samples drawn from four Western European countries ( N = 3,354). Multigroup regression analysis supports our hypotheses: False consensus and hostile media p…

Illness perceptions of COVID-19 in Europe: Predictors, impacts and temporal evolution

2021

Objective: Illness perceptions (IP) are important predictors of emotional and behavioral responses in many diseases. The current study aims to investigate the COVID-19-related IP throughout Europe. The specific goals are to understand the temporal development, identify predictors (within demographics and contact with COVID-19) and examine the impacts of IP on perceived stress and preventive behaviors. Methods: This was a time-series-cross-section study of 7, 032 participants from 16 European countries using multilevel modeling from April to June 2020. IP were measured with the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire. Temporal patterns were observed considering the date of participation and t…

Decorative elements in the medical imaging area improve patients’ perception of pleasantness

2014

Abstract Objectives To evaluate the sensation of pleasantness perceived by patients attended in the radiology department in response to decorative elements hung on the walls in the waiting rooms and in the hallways of the imaging area. Material and methods The material resources comprised works of art in the form of “magic windows” representing scenes from nature installed on the ceilings and walls of the waiting area and hallways of the imaging area. Patients were given a brief questionnaire with general data and questions (sadness–cheerfulness, coldness–warmth, darkness–light, and pessimism–optimism) about their perception of the decorative elements. Results Of the 150 questionnaires coll…

Forms of Bullying and Associations Between School Perceptions and Being Bullied Among Finnish Secondary School Students Aged 13 and 15

2019

AbstractThe study aimed to examine the extent to which Finnish secondary school students experience bullying, how they are bullied, and whether being bullied is associated with school perceptions. The analyses were based on data from the Finnish part of the international Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, and were obtained from 4262 students aged 13 and 15. The sample was nationally representative. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the associations between school perceptions and being bullied. Younger students reported being bullied more often than older students. Among younger students, boys were more often bullied than girls of the same age. There …

Investigating teachers’ dyadic self-efficacy and its correlations to students’ perceptions of teacher efficacy and student well-being

2022

Most studies, to date, have ignored variance in teachers’ self-efficacy (TSE) in relation to teaching individual students (i.e., student-specific self-efficacy). However, TSE and teacher efficacy differ among students. Thus, this study examines dyadic TSE in four domains and their correlations with students’ perceptions of teacher efficacy and student academic self-concept and well-being. Results of a paper–pencil survey involving 29 teachers and 469 students (39.9% girls, aged 10–17 years) from German secondary schools reveal a moderate overlap between dyadic TSE and students’ perceptions of teacher efficacy. Furthermore, they reveal variance in how teachers’ and students’ ratings are rela…

An Empirical Examination of the Economics of Mobile Application Security

2021

The growth of mobile devices coupled with the advances in mobile technologies has resulted in the development and widespread use of a variety of mobile applications (apps). Mobile apps have been developed for social networking, banking, receiving daily news, maintaining fitness, and for job-related tasks. The security of the apps is an important concern. However, in some cases, the app developers may be less interested to invest in the security of the apps, if users are unwilling to pay for the added security. In this paper, we empirically examine whether consumers are less willing to pay for security features than for usability features. In addition, we examine whether a third-party certif…

"Mutta niille ei voi mitään, joilla on aivoissa vika" : mielisairauden kansanomaiset tulkinnat 1900-luvun alkuvuosikymmenten modernisoituvassa Suomes…

2015

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan mielisairauden kansanomaisia tulkintoja 1900-luvun ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä, jolloin mielisairaita ja muita marginaaliryhmiä koskeva yhteiskunnallinen keskustelu kävi vilkkaana. Mielisairaat alkoivat degeneraatioteorioiden myötä näyttäytyä modernisoituvan yhteiskunnan ei- toivottuina toisina, joiden henkinen ja fyysinen rappio uskottiin perinnölliseksi. Mielisairaaloiden lukumäärää lisättiin, mutta merkittävä osa mielisairaiksi katsotuista eli yhä laitosten ulkopuolella, esimerkiksi elätteellä maaseudun yksityisissä perheissä. Artikkelissa selvitetään, miten mielisairaisiin suhtaudutaan aikakauden maallikkokerronnassa ja millaisia käsityksiä esitetään mielisair…
