Neuronal intestinal dysplasia

Findings in 23 children with neuronal intestinal dysplasia (NID) are presented. Twelve children had Hirschsprung's disease that masked the existence of proximal NID. In all cases the diagnosis was established by histological-histochemical examination. Amelioration of symptoms by conservative treatment alone was achieved in 4 children; in 13 cases colostomy was necessary. In 6 patients colon resection was performed: 2 suffered from both colitis and obstruction; the other 4 were treated for obstruction, multiple perforations, persistant adynamia of the left colon, and fistulation. 35 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia were studied electroencephalographically during a period of 5 to 10 years (median 9 years) after diagnosis. During this time 51% of the patients intermittently showed changes in the background activity, which may indicate discrete CNS-lesions. All but one patient, suffering from an intracerebral hemorrhage, had normal EEGs at the end of the individual observation period.

Abstract Background Surgeons are at risk for developing work-related musculoskeletal symptoms (WMS). The present study aims to examine the physical factors and their association with WMS among pediatric laparoscopic surgeons. Methods A questionnaire consisting of 21 questions was created and mailed to 25 pediatric laparoscopic surgeons (LG). 23/25 surgeons (92%) completed the survey. The questionnaire was analyzed and then split into 2 groups. Summary Background : The objective of the present study was to evaluate the prelaryngeal position of the laryngeal mask airway (LMATM) in children, and to determine the influence of mask positioning on gastric insufflation and oropharyngeal air leakage. Methods : A total of 100 children, 3–11 years old, scheduled for surgical procedures in the supine position under general anaesthesia were studied. Recent therapeutic approaches have improved the prognosis of children with HIV. Many new efforts could be involved in their quality of life and therefore could need additional diagnostic strategies. Leptin regulates pubertal development; furthermore a continuous immune stimulus, as in chronic infectious diseases, can enhance leptin's secretion by the action of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-6. To clarify this role in patients infected with HIV, we assayed leptin and IL-6 and evaluated the influence of HIV severity on its secretion.
