Influence of the terminal complement-complex on reperfusion injury, no-reflow and arrhythmias: a comparison between C6-competent and C6-deficient rab…

1996

Objective: The complement system has been suggested to play a role in reperfusion injury which may result from an enhanced destruction of myocardial tissue or from an impairment of reflow. We investigated the influence of the C5b-9 complement complex on infarct size, reflow and arrhythmogenesis. Methods: Twenty-eight C6-competent rabbits and 18 rabbits with congenital C6 deficiency were subjected to either 30 min or 2 h of coronary artery occlusion followed by reperfusion. C6 deficiency was confirmed by the complement titration test and immunohistology. The triphenyl tetrazolium chloride method was used to delineate infarct size. Reflow into infarcted areas was evaluated histologically afte…

Myoedema

1992

Stationary muscle mounding after muscle percussion without electrical muscle activity is called myoedema. Out of 105 patients with different neurological diseases, 88% had this phenomenon. Muscle conduction velocity and stimulated single fiber EMG disclosed no abnormalities. Myoedema is a normal physiological phenomenon, and its presence does not indicate a neuromuscular disorder.

Rationale and design of the EMBRACE STEMI Study: A phase 2a, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the safety, tolerability …

2012

Background Although significant efforts have been made to improve ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) outcomes by reducing symptom-onset-to-reperfusion times, strategies to decrease the clinical impact of ischemic reperfusion injury have demonstrated limited success. Bendavia, an intravenously administered mitochondrial targeting peptide, has been shown to reduce myocardial infarct size and attenuate coronary no-reflow in experimental modelswhen given before reperfusion. Design The EMBRACE STEMI study is a phase 2a, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolling 300 patients with a first-time anterior STEMI and an occluded proximal or mid–left anterior descendin…

Iterative Learning Applied to Hydraulic Pressure Control

2018

This paper addresses a performance limiting phenomenon that may occur in the pressure control of hydraulic actuators subjected to external velocity disturbances. It is demonstrated that under certain conditions a severe peaking of the control error may be observed that significantly degrades the performance of the system due to the presence of nonlinearities. The phenomenon is investigated numerically and experimentally using a system that requires pressure control of two hydraulic cylinders. It is demonstrated that the common solution of feed forwarding the velocity disturbance is not effective in reducing the peaking that occurs as a result of this phenomenon. To improve the system perfor…

The Influence of Nanoparticle Shape on Protein Corona Formation

2020

Nanoparticles have become an important utility in many areas of medical treatment such as targeted drug and treatment delivery as well as imaging and diagnostics. These advances require a complete understanding of nanoparticles' fate once placed in the body. Upon exposure to blood, proteins adsorb onto the nanoparticles surface and form a protein corona, which determines the particles' biological fate. This study reports on the protein corona formation from blood serum and plasma on spherical and rod‐shaped nanoparticles. These two types of mesoporous silica nanoparticles have identical chemistry, porosity, surface potential, and size in the y ‐dimension, one being a sphere and the other a …

Roland Barthes. El sentido de la moda

2021

Roland Barthes devoted much of his intellectual interest to the phenomenon of fashion. Long before his famous Système de la Mode, he wrote numerous essays on the subject, mainly of a methodological nature, both to elaborate a coherent historiography of dress and to establish a semiology of dress itself, distinguishing –with Saussure– between costume (langue) and clothing (parole). Indeed, if dress is a heteroclite whole, like language for Saussure, the semiologist’s task is to reconstruct its functioning as a system of signs, not only in the dress described by the magazines (as he does in Système), but also in the dress actually worn. A set of essays, in short, of extreme importance for any…

El impacto del cambio climático en la movilidad humana : las migraciones climáticas en el contexto internacional y europeo

2021

For decades, the migration phenomenon has been one of the thorniest regulatory issues in the European Union (EU) policy. In addition, today, the fight against climate change in all regions of the world makes the situation worse for the new ?climate refugees? or ?environmental displaced people?, whose legal status is not yet covered by the ancient 1951 Refugee Convention.
