Imaging techniques for the vulnerable coronary plaque

The goal of this article is to illustrate the main invasive and noninvasive diagnostic modalities to image the vulnerable coronary plaque, which is responsible for acute coronary syndrome. The main epidemiologic and histological issues are briefly discussed in order to provide an adequate background. Comprehensive coronary atherosclerosis imaging should involve visualization of the entire coronary artery tree and plaque characterization, including three-dimensional morphology, relationship with the lumen, composition, vascular remodelling and presence of inflammation. Epistasis and the Adaptability of an RNA Virus

Abstract We have explored the patterns of fitness recovery in the vesicular stomatitis RNA virus. We show that, in our experimental setting, reversions to the wild-type genotype were rare and fitness recovery was at least partially driven by compensatory mutations. We compared compensatory adaptation for genotypes carrying (1) mutations with varying deleterious fitness effects, (2) one or two deleterious mutations, and (3) pairs of mutations showing differences in the strength and sign of epistasis. Repeated transfer of small RNA virus populations leading to balanced fitness with infrequent stochastic drift

The population dynamics of RNA viruses have an important influence on fitness variation and, in consequence, on the adaptative potential and virulence of this ubiquitous group of pathogens. Earlier work with vesicular stomatitis virus showed that large population transfers were reproducibly associated with fitness increases, whereas repeated transfers from plaque to plaque (genetic bottlenecks) lead to losses in fitness. Univacuolar refractile hemocytes from the tunicate Ciona intestinalis are cytotoxic for mammalian erythrocytes in vitro

A discontinuous, Percoll density gradient was used to separate hemocyte populations from the hemolymph of Ciona intestinalis. Hemocytes from each band were examined for their frequency, morphology, and cytotoxic activity against rabbit and sheep erythrocytes; results were expressed as a percentage of hemolysis. Statistical analysis revealed that only the "univacuolar" granulocytes from Band 5, which contain a vacuole of refractile material, were cytotoxic. Cytotoxic activity was inhibited by sphingomyelin. Progressive symmetric erythro-keratosis associated with oligodontia, severe caries, disturbed hair growth and ectopic nail: a new syndrome?

A 7-year-old girl had well-demarcated erythematous plaques covered with white pityriasiform scales which were symmetrically distributed and involved the extensor surfaces of the extremities as well as the abdomen, buttocks and face. Histological examination showed marked hyperkeratosis with parakeratosis, and a thickened granular cell layer, mild acanthosis and slight lymphocytic infiltration surrounding the papillary blood vessels, compatible with a diagnosis of progressive symmetrical erythrokeratodermia.
