Board structures, liberal countries, and developed market economies. Do they matter in environmental reporting? An international outlook
2019
This is the pre-peer reviewed version of the following article: Board structures, liberal countries, and developed market economies. Do they matter in environmental reporting? An international outlook, which has been published in final form at: https://doi.org/10.1002/bse.2275. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Use of Self-Archived Versions. Previous empirical evidence has shown the effect of most corporate governance mechanisms on corporate social responsibility and environmental disclosure. However, there is scant empirical evidence that examines the influence of liberal countries, developed market economies, and board s…
The puzzles of daily life: The temporal orders of families when parents have non‐standard work schedules
2022
This article investigates the temporal orders of families as the daily rhythms and schedules when one or both parents work non-standard hours. Our focus is especially on the often asynchronous times of non-standard work, on one hand, and of early childhood education and care (ECEC) services and other institutions, on the other hand. The data consist of semi-structured qualitative interviews of Finnish parents with a four-year-old child. The results show that the asynchronous times generated by non-standard working hours cause a wide range of collisions both in relation to childcare and ECEC and to the division of labour between parents. The parents are ‘wrestling’, not only because of the a…
Intra-EU Mobility: The Employment and Welfare Experience of Temporary EU Workers in the United Kingdom
2021
This article explores the mobility pathways of temporary EU workers and the implications that transnational temporary mobility has on their labor market outcomes and access to social rights and benefits. The experiences of temporary EU migrants working in the UK show that despite the narrative of the borderlessness of the common European labor market, access to host countries’ labor market and welfare is shaped by their employment status and welfare eligibility criteria that produce worker precariousness. Temporary EU workers’ experiences are characterized by employment insecurity and unequal access to labor and social rights, effects which might increase since the UK has left the EU.
The impact of periodic interviews on unemployment duration : Evidence from the 2017 Finnish reform
2023
In 2017, a Finnish policy reform intensified the Public Employment Services' practice of periodically interviewing unemployed jobseekers. This study used high-quality administrative data to analyse the effect of interviews on unemployment duration. We used a difference-in-differences approach that exploited regional variations in treatment intensity. Our results show that a 10 percentage point increase in interview probability increased the monthly hazard rate of employment by 3.1 per cent, with the effect being strongest among jobseekers aged 25–34 and jobseekers with a low education level. Also, our results demonstrate a strong effect on participation in active labour market programmes. p…
Relacje Unia Europejska – Turcja wobec kryzysu migracyjnego. Makiaweliczne plany czy wyraz bezsilności?
2015
Geneza ruchu ziomkowskiego w Niemczech Zachodnich (1947–1949) a źródła rewizjonizmu zachodnioniemieckiego
2018
The homeland association movement in Germany is an important element of the social and political landscape of that country. The importance of this movement and its influence upon the political system of Germany underwent evolution. The greatest importance – in social aspect, but also in political aspect – characterised the initial twenty-year period of the existence of the Federal Republic of Germany, i.e. the years 1949–1969. Numerous connections that the movement leaders had with political parties, along with the participation in holding power (the representatives of the movement sat in federal governments as well), stood as evidence that the expelled and their organisations had tangible …
‘Integration is not a one-way process’ : students negotiating meanings of integration and internationalization at home (IaH) in Finnish higher educat…
2023
Internationalization at home (IaH) policies in higher education institutions (HEIs) are rarely negotiated with and by students. Therefore, students’ takes on such policies could be missed opportunities for HEIs. This qualitative study investigates international and local students’ negotiations and meaning-making of integration and IaH as stated by institutional policies. The data consist of online forum entries and reports from small group discussions between 40 students in English medium master’s programs in Finland (Europe). The key concepts of ideology and imaginary serve as entries into data analysis, which consists of enunciative discourse analysis. The findings indicate a perceived hi…

Remarks on negative interest rates
2016
Negative nominal interest rates have been observed in several segments of financial markets. Being only partly a result of supply and demand and mainly enforced by the central banks, negative interest rates are getting more and more popular. While it is relatively easy to identify the reasons for this quite strange phenomenon, the con-sequences, especially the long-term consequences, are not too clear for both scientists and ordinary observers. This paper is an attempt to formulate some remarks on causes, evidence, and possible effects of negative interest rates. A warning is issued, with respect to monetary policy and financial stability.
