Determining the optical properties of adsorbate covered surfaces by dichroism in VUV-photoemission
1999
The dichroic effects of photoemission excited by polarised light depend on the angle of photon incidence. Measurements of the difference in the angle-resolved photoemission intensities from Cs 5p semi-corelevels excited by photons of opposite helicity, or of orthogonal linear polarisation are reported. It was thought that the dependence of dichroism on the angle of incidence cannot be described using equations omitting metal optics. A complete consideration of the vector potential of the exciting light is needed, including the phase shift between it's parallel and perpendicular components. The phase shift is produced by the complex index of refraction. Using the Fresnel equations for struct…
Submicrometer in-plane integrated surface plasmon cavities.
2007
International audience; The optical properties of in-plane integrated surface plasmon polariton (SPP) cavities comprised of a thin film area sandwiched between two one-dimensional Bragg SPP mirrors are investigated numerically and experimentally. We discuss the resonance condition of these cavities, and we analyze in details the physical origin of the dispersion of this resonance. On the basis of numerical results, we show that in-plane SPP cavities can be used to achieve local SPP field enhancement and antireflecting SPP layers. The numerical results are compared to near-field optical images recorded by operating a photon scanning tunneling microscope. From the near-field images recorded o…
Photoemission of spin-polarized electrons from negative electron affinity GaAsP
1979
GaAs0.62P0.38 activated to negative electron affinity and irradiated with circularly polarized light of a wavelength shorter than approximately 680 nm emits electrons whose spins are mainly oriented antiparallel to the photon spins. At 650 nm a degree of electron spin polarization around 40% is observed. The spectrum of spin polarization of the photoelectrons is similar to that known from GaAs cathodes but is shifted to shorter wavelengths. 25 μA current of spin-polarized electrons were achieved with a 5 mW He-Ne laser.

Disentangling the Mn moments on different sublattices in the half-metallic ferrimagnet Mn3−xCoxGa
2011
Ferrimagnetic Mn3−xCoxGa compounds have been investigated by magnetic circular dichroism in x-ray absorption (XMCD). Compounds with x>0.5 crystallize in the CuHg2Ti structure. A tetragonal distortion of the cubic structure occurs for x≤0.5. For the cubic phase, magnetometry reveals a linearly increasing magnetization of 2x Bohr magnetons per formula unit obeying the generalized Slater–Pauling rule. XMCD confirms the ferrimagnetic character with Mn atoms occupying two different sublattices with antiparallel spin orientation and different degrees of spin localization and identifies the region 0.6<x≤0.8 as most promising for a high spin polarization at the Fermi level. Individual Mn moments on…
Electron spin polarization in the photoemission of NEA GaAs1?x P x
1982
Negative electron affinity GaAs1−xPx-photocathodes emit spin-polarized electrons if irradiated with circularly polarized light. The spectra of spin polarization of photoelectrons emitted from crystals with different phosphorus contentx resemble each other in shape but shift to shorter wavelengths with increasingx. Polarization values up to 40% are observed for electrons from crystals withx=0 andx=0.38. Cathodes with higher phosphorus contents increasing fromx=0.65 tox=0.87 and tox = 1.0 deliver photoelectrons with decreasing degrees of spin polarization of 17%, 15%, and 9%, respectively, at maximum.
Strategies for efficient field-free molecular alignment and its control
2008
Strategies using shaped laser fields to produce and control efficient field-free alignment are analyzed and compared. It is in particular shown that the strategy recently proposed using a shaped laser field combining an adiabatic ramp with a kick is superior to the bipulse strategy.
