Warren Buffett versus Zvi Bodie: Should You Buy Or Sell Put Options?

2021

Academics and investment professionals often disagree when it comes to investment advice. Legendary investor Warren Buffett is a proponent of time diversification and firmly believes that stocks are less risky in the long run. Therefore, he often sells long-term put options instead of buying them for portfolio protection. By contrast, the famous finance professor Zvi Bodie argues that time diversification is a fallacy and, therefore, his advice to fund managers is to buy long-term portfolio insurance. In this article, we consider the optimal portfolio choice problem for a loss-averse investor. First, we demonstrate that our loss-averse investor subscribes to the principle of time diversific…

Carbon Nanostructures: Covalent and Macromolecular Chemistry

2012

The aim of this introductory chapter is to bring to the attention of the readers the achievements made in the chemistry of carbon nanostructures and, mostly, in the chemistry of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the most recent graphenes. Since the discovery of fullerenes in 1985 and their further preparation in multigram amounts, the chemistry and reactivity of these molecular carbon allotropes have been well established. Actually, this chemical reactivity has been used as a benchmark for further studies carried out in the coming carbon nanotubes (single and multiple wall) and graphenes. Assuming that the fundamental chemistry of fullerenes is known and basically corresponds to that…

Encyclopedia of Polymer Science and Technology

2007

A general overview of the different types of C60-containing polymers according to their chemical structure and the consideration of their general synthetic routes as well as their plausible applications is given. The aim of this work is to establish a classification of the many fullerenecontaining polymers reported in the literature in order to clarify the field for all those chemists interested in the topic. Needless to say that not all the examples known are covered, but those more representative or appealing for the authors.

POSS Grafting on Polyethylene and Maleic Anhydride-Grafted Polyethylene by One-Step Reactive Melt Mixing

2018

This study reports the one-step reactive melt mixing preparation of organic-inorganic hybrid based on maleic anhydride-grafted polyethylene and 3-(2-aminoethyl)aminopropyl-heptaisobutyl substituted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane, (NPOSS), as well as on low-density polyethylene and allyl-heptaisobutyl-POSS (1POSS) in dicumyl peroxide presence, which is believed to activate the unsaturation of the reactive functional group of POSS itself. The successful grafting of POSS molecules onto polymeric backbones was probed through rheological and spectroscopic analysis. Grafting of POSS molecules enhances their dispersion in the polymeric matrix as shown by morphological analysis. Moreover, the…

Squaric Acid Mediated Synthesis and Biological Activity of a Library of Linear and Hyperbranched Poly(Glycerol)-Protein Conjugates

2012

Polymer-protein conjugates generated from side chain functional synthetic polymers are attractive because they can be easily further modified with, for example, labeling groups or targeting ligands. The residue specific modification of proteins with side chain functional synthetic polymers using the traditional coupling strategies may be compromised due to the nonorthogonality of the side-chain and chain-end functional groups of the synthetic polymer, which may lead to side reactions. This study explores the feasibility of the squaric acid diethyl ester mediated coupling as an amine selective, hydroxyl tolerant, and hydrolysis insensitive route for the preparation of side-chain functional, …

Silk-based matrices and c-Kit positive cardiac progenitor cells for a cellularized silk fibroin scaffold: study of an in vivo model.

2022

The production of a cellularized silk fibroin scaffold is very difficult because it is actually impossible to differentiate cells into a well-organized cardiac tissue. Without vascularization, not only do cell masses fail to grow, but they may also exhibit an area of necrosis, indicating a lack of oxygen and nutrients. In the present study, we used the so-called tyrosine protein kinase kit (c-kit)-positive cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) to generate cardiac cellularized silk fibroin scaffolds, multipotent cells isolated from the adult heart to date that can show some degree of differentiation toward the cardiac phenotype. To test their ability to differentiate into the cardiac phenotype in …

Guest Induced Strong Cooperative One- and Two-Step Spin Transitions in Highly Porous Iron(II) Hofmann-Type Metal-Organic Frameworks.

2017

[EN] The synthesis, crystal structure, magnetic, calorimetric, and Mo¿ ssbauer studies of a series of new Hofmann-type spin crossover (SCO) metal¿organic frameworks (MOFs) is reported. The new SCO-MOFs arise from self-assembly of FeII, bis(4-pyridyl)butadiyne (bpb), and [Ag(CN)2] ¿ or [MII(CN)4] 2¿ (MII = Ni, Pd). Interpenetration of four identical 3D networks with ¿-Po topology are obtained for {Fe(bpb)[AgI (CN)2]2} due to the length of the rod-like bismonodentate bpb and [Ag(CN)2] ¿ ligands. The four networks are tightly packed and organized in two subsets orthogonally interpenetrated, while the networks in each subset display parallel interpenetration. This nonporous material undergoes a…

Hydrogen Bonding Donor–Acceptor Carbon Nanostructure

2012

The natural process of photosynthesis is paradigmatic in converting sunlight into energy. This complicated process requires a cascade of energy- and electron-transfer events in a highly organised matrix of electron–donor, electron–acceptor and antennae units and has prompted researchers to emulate it. In fact, energy- and electron-transfer processes play a pivotal role in molecular-scale optoelectronics. In this chapter we compile a number of remarkable examples of noncovalent aggregates formed by the combination of carbon-based electroactive species (fullerenes and carbon nanotubes) hydrogen bonded with a variety of moieties. We will show that: (a) the connection of complementary electroac…
