Molecular parameters of hyperbranched polymers made by self-condensing vinyl polymerization of macroinimers
2000
The molecular weight averages and the degree of branching, DB, of a hyperbranched polymer obtained by self-condensing vinyl polymerization (SCVP) of a macroinimer A-(m)γ-B* is calculated by modifying the existing equations for SCVP. The polydispersity is lowered by a factor (γ + 1), where γ is the degree of polymerization of the macroinimer. DB decreases with γ, however, at full conversion the DB of the polymacroinimer is approximately 60% higher than expected from the “dilution” of an AB* inimer with linear m units. This is the result of the existence of a new kind of branched units. The structure of polymacroinimers is similar to the pattern of a highly branched copolymer obtained by self…
Pencil Lead as a Matrix for MALDI-ToF Mass Spectrometry of Sensitive Functional Polymers
2007
With the increase in complexity of functional polymers in recent years, MALDI-ToF has become an important tool for gaining precise information on polymer functionality, end groups, and, in special cases, molecular weights. Here we describe how pencil lead, deposited by simply drawing with a regular pencil onto conventional MALDI-ToF targets, can be used as a very attractive matrix for MALDI-ToF mass spectrometry of synthetic polymers. Highly sensitive polymers such as silyl hydride functional poly(styrene), poly(butadiene), and poly(isoprene) have been investigated using conventional MALDI-ToF matrices as well as pencil lead. In all cases, the use of pencil lead prevented oxidation of the h…
Synthesis and polymerization of active ester monomers based on 4-vinylbenzoic acid
2007
Abstract Nine active ester monomers based on 4-vinylbenzoic acid have been synthesized. Under free radical polymerization conditions these monomers could successfully be polymerized yielding reactive polymers with molecular weights of around M n = 20.000–50.000 g/mol and molecular weight distributions M w / M n of around or below 2 in good yields. Polymer analogous reactions with amines have been investigated by time-resolved FT-IR spectroscopy and it was found that especially poly(pentafluorophenyl 4-vinylbenzoate) featured a significant reactivity, such that polymer analogous reactions proceeded quantitatively with amines within less than 5 min at 0 °C.
On the handedness of helical aggregates of C3 tricarboxamides: a multichiroptical characterization
2015
A complete chiroptical characterization of the supramolecular polymers formed by tricarboxamides (S)-1 and (R)-1 is performed using ECD, VCD and CPL dichroic techniques. The helical aggregates show an intense CPL signal and their absolute P- or M-configuration is assigned with the help of theoretical calculations.
Local dynamics in supramolecular polymer networks probed by magnetic particle nanorheology
2019
Transient supramolecular polymer networks are promising candidates as soft self-healing or stimuli-sensitive materials. In this paper, we employ a novel nanorheological approach, magnetic particle nanorheology (MPN), in order to better understand the local dynamic properties of model supramolecular networks from a molecular point of view. Hence, the bond strength between four-arm star-shaped polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized at the four extremities with terpyridine ligands is tuned by implementing different metal ions with variable complexation affinities for the ligand. We show that MNP allows for the evaluation of the strength and connectivity of the polymer networks by the estimat…
Static and dynamic scaling behavior of a polymer melt model with triple-well bending potential
2018
We perform molecular-dynamics simulations for polymer melts of the coarse-grained polyvinyl alcohol model that crystallizes upon slow cooling. To establish the properties of its high temperature liquid state as a reference point, we characterize in detail the structural features of equilibrated polymer melts with chain lengths $5\le N \le 1000$ at a temperature slightly above their crystallization temperature. We find that the conformations of sufficiently long polymers with $N >50$ obey essentially the Flory's ideality hypothesis. The chain length dependence of the end-to-end distance and the gyration radius follow the scaling predictions of ideal chains and the probability distributions o…
Coordination Geometry Preference Regulates the Structure and Dynamics of Metallo-Supramolecular Polymer Networks
2021
Metal–ligand interactions are extensively used for the development of biomimetic polymers. Macroscopic properties of such systems are closely tied to the microscopic structure and dynamics of not o...
Structure of Polymers
2014
The structure and thermodynamics of polymers are discussed both with an adapted version of Flory’s regular solution theory and the concept of scaling and random walks. The salient properties of polymers like segregation and elasticity are discussed in terms of these concept. The Flory-Stockmayer theory of gelation is introduced and related to the percolation concept.
Influence of gamma-irradiation on thermally-induced mesoscopic gelation of degalactosylated xyloglucans
2014
Thermoresponsive degalactosylated xyloglucans have been already proposed as in situ gelling scaffolds for tissue engineering, due to their reversible macroscopic thermal gelation at body temperature and biodegradability. The highly branched, hydroxyl group-rich molecular structure renders xyloglucans interesting raw materials also in the form of micro/nanoparticles for application as nanoscalar drug delivery devices in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. Owing to their natural source, xyloglucans show high average molecular weight, broad molecular weight distribution and poor water solubility, as large and compact aggregates usually form via inter-molecular hydrogen bonding. Co-60 gam…
