Treatment sequence of synchronously (liver) metastasized colon cancer

2016

No standards for staging, systemic therapy or the timing of an operation are defined for patients newly diagnosed with synchronous metastases and a primary in the colon. An expert group of radiologists, medical, radiation and surgical oncologists therefore came together to discuss staging and treatment sequence for these patients and came up with a recommendation based on current evidence of potential therapeutic options. The discussion was organized to debate recommendations centred on 5 topics and therefore the position paper is built upon these titles and their subtitles. First results for resetting the antitumor immune response by immune corrective surgery in colon cancer.

1998

BACKGROUND: A critical step for cancer recurrence is the failure of the cellular immune response. It is suspected that chronic humoral immune responses against some tumor-associated antigens (TAA) can contribute to that failure. METHODS: In this study, we tested the ability of an immune corrective surgical procedure to prevent recurrences of colon cancer in stages I, II, and III. Radiolabeled anti-TAG antibodies injected intravenously become concentrated on TAG-72 immune complexes presented by follicular dendritic cells, which are responsible for the persistent humoral response against TAG-72 TAA. Using a hand-held gamma probe, we can intraoperatively detect and remove lymph nodes involved …

The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system

2019

In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…

Dynamic regulation of CD8 T cell tolerance induction by liver sinusoidal endothelial cells.

2010

Abstract Cross-presentation of soluble Ag on MHC class I molecules to naive CD8 T cells by liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) leads to induction of T cell tolerance that requires interaction between coinhibitory B7-H1 on LSECs and programmed cell death-1 on CD8 T cells. In this study, we investigate whether cross-presentation of high as well as low Ag concentrations allowed for LSEC-induced tolerance. Ag concentration directly correlated with the cross-presentation capacity of murine LSECs and thus strength of TCR stimulation. Although LSEC cross-presentation at low-Ag concentrations resulted in tolerance, they induced differentiation into effector T cells (CTL) at high-Ag concentra…

Augmented antigen presentation by mouse Ia + T clone cells BK-BI-2.6.O4.1 mediated by transferrin receptors.

1996

The murine T clone cells BK-BI-2.6.O4.1 (BI/O4.1) synthesize and express MHC class II molecules constitutively. BI/O4.1 cells are able to present various protein antigens to antigen-specific CD4 + T cells. However, a 10-fold higher concentration of antigen is needed to activate specific T cells to lymphokine secretion by BI/O4.1 cells in comparison with spleen cells or with the more homogeneous population of bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMph). The authors tested whether the reduced antigen presentation potential of BI/O4.1 cells was augmented by transferrin-mediated uptake of the model antigen ovalbumin (OVA) coupled to human ferric transferrin. It was shown that 240-fold less OVA was …

Interstitial lung disease associated with drug therapy

2004

Drug-associated interstitial lung disease (ILD) is not uncommon, with diverse patterns ranging from benign infiltrates to the potentially fatal acute respiratory distress syndrome. As acute respiratory failure due to drug-associated ILD has an unpredictable onset and rapid time course, establishing a diagnosis is often difficult. An accurate diagnosis is based on clinical, radiological (including high-resolution computed tomography) and histological manifestations, although is often only possible by exclusion. Cancer chemotherapy is commonly associated with acute disease that, on pathology, is often diffuse alveolar damage. Furthermore, a combination of drugs with or without radiotherapy ca…
