Arte, Música y Conceptualismo en América Latina
2021
2019
The present article attempts to record and present as much as possible the Latin translations of hagiographical texts during the Middle Byzantine period. The texts are first approached from a literary point of view, then a historical presentation is attempted, referring to their possible functional use in the traditions of the two churches, Constantinople and Rome.
OVERTURE Love Love is a Pink Cake or Queering Chopin in Times of Homophobia
2021
An introduction to the three essays included in this section. The article highlights the right to know whether Chopin was gay and contextualizes this inquiry in a very long and pervasive historiographical tradition, essentially twohundred years long, dedicated to examine Chopin sexual orientation, on the one hand, and on the other the more recent tradition of queering western classical music composers. The main point is not to demonstrate categorically that Chopin was ?gay? (a relative, modern identity marker in any case) but rather to highlight the discourses that have presented him as unequivocally heterosexual.

Modification of antigen-encoding RNA increases stability, translational efficacy, and T-cell stimulatory capacity of dendritic cells.
2006
AbstractAdoptive transfer of dendritic cells (DCs) transfected with in vitro–transcribed, RNA-encoding, tumor-associated antigens has recently entered clinical testing as a promising approach for cancer immunotherapy. However, pharmacokinetic exploration of RNA as a potential drug compound and a key aspect of clinical development is still pending. While investigating the impact of different structural modifications of RNA molecules on the kinetics of the encoded protein in DCs, we identified components located 3′ of the coding region that contributed to a higher transcript stability and translational efficiency. With the use of quantitative reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (R…
Heat shock protein-peptide complexes for use in vaccines
1996
Abstract The heat shock proteins gp96, HSP70, and HSP90 are complexed to a diverse array of cellular proteins and peptides as a consequence of their chaperone functions. There is good experimental evidence that vaccination with these heat shock protein-peptide complexes elicit immune responses against chaperoned peptide antigens. As shown with gp96, this requires internalization of the heat shock protein-peptide complexes by macrophages and processing of the chaperoned peptides for class I restricted presentation. Via this process, primarily CD8+ antigen-specific T cells are primed by gp96 vaccination. This might represent a general mechanism for priming of MHC-class I restricted T cells by…

The Efficacy of Antigen Processing Is Critical for Protection against Cytomegalovirus Disease in the Presence of Viral Immune Evasion Proteins▿
2009
ABSTRACT Cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) code for immunoevasins, glycoproteins that are specifically dedicated to interfere with the presentation of antigenic peptides to CD8 T cells. Nonetheless, the biological outcome is not an immune evasion of the virus, since CD8 T cells can control CMV infection even when immunoevasins are expressed. Here, we compare the processing of a protective and a nonprotective epitope derived from the same viral protein, the antiapoptotic protein M45 in the murine model. The data provide evidence to conclude that protection against CMVs critically depends on antigenic peptides generated in an amount sufficient to exhaust the inhibitory capacity of immunoevasins.
Unusual Presentation of Bilateral Carotid Artery Dissection: The Importance of Reasoning Outside the Box
2021
A bilateral internal carotid artery dissection presenting with atypical symptoms of cerebral hypoperfusion has been rarely reported, especially in the absence of obvious precipitating factors. A middle-aged woman presented to the emergency department with a 2-day-history of progressive left arm numbness and weakness, confusion, disorientation and clumsiness worsened by upright position. A cerebral hypoperfusion condition was hypothesized and confirmed by a CT angiography, which showed bilateral internal carotid dissection with uncertain etiology. Screening for predisposing conditions to spontaneous carotid arteries dissection was basically negative. Regarding potential precipitating factors…
Neurological manifestations of the West Nile virus infection in some cases found in the clinic of infectious diseases in Sibiu, Romania
2014
Background The neurological manifestations in the West Nile virus infections are present in less than 1% of the diagnosed cases, neurological manifestations which may take many different forms, from encephalitis, meningitis, GuillainBarre syndrome, optic neuritis to polio-like manifestations. We aimed to evaluate the clinical and paraclinical aspects of the cases presenting neurological infections caused by the West Nile virus diagnosed and treated in our clinic.
