Chinese Public Sentiments about Italy during the Sanmen Bay Affair in the Pages of the Shenbao

2015

This paper introduces which was the public sentiment and opinion of the Chinese journalists of the Shenbao in a very relevant period of the history of the relations between Italy and China. We know that China had had a very high opinion of Italy thanks to the magnificent portrait of ancient Italian society, art and culture made by the Jesuit missionaries. But in the selected historical moment, there was a strong change in the way Chinese people felt about the Italian presence in China. Apart from some previous failures of the Italian diplomatic action in China, the Sanmen Bay affairs represents the climax of the inability of Italian diplomacy, so that Chinese people were clearly aware of th…

Theoretical study of Fe doping and oxidation–reduction influence on the photorefractive effect in BaTiO_3

1993

We numerically solve charge-transport and Poisson equations for photorefractive BaTiO3 single crystals with a band model, using four impurity levels, Fe2+–Fe3+, Fe3+–Fe4+, VO••–VO•, and VO•-VOx. Densities and photoinduced spatial distributions of each population are computed as a function of annealing O partial pressure. Space-charge field and beam-coupling gain are also computed as a function of annealing O partial pressure, temperature, Fe concentration, grating wave vector, and light intensity. We discuss the intervening mechanism of impurity centers and the correlations between experimental conditions of crystal growth, oxidation–reduction treatments, and measurement parameters.

Vascular Changes and Aging

1998

The progress of cardiovascular prevention and the large use of antibiotics have determined in the last fifty years a progressive increase of life duration, especially in the western countries, and so, a noticeable increase of elderly subjects in the population (1,2).

Feasibility of Ultra-Short-Term Analysis of Heart Rate and Systolic Arterial Pressure Variability at Rest and during Stress via Time-Domain and Entro…

2022

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Blood Pressure Variability (BPV) are widely employed tools for characterizing the complex behavior of cardiovascular dynamics. Usually, HRV and BPV analyses are carried out through short-term (ST) measurements, which exploit ~five-minute-long recordings. Recent research efforts are focused on reducing the time series length, assessing whether and to what extent Ultra-Short-Term (UST) analysis is capable of extracting information about cardiovascular variability from very short recordings. In this work, we compare ST and UST measures computed on electrocardiographic R-R intervals and systolic arterial pressure time series obtained at rest and during both post…

Causal and Non-Causal Frequency Domain Assessment of Spontaneous Baroreflex Sensitivity after Myocardial Infarction

2020

Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is thought to alter the baroreflex control of arterial pressure. We tested this hypothesis investigating the changes of the cardiovascular response after AMI in comparison with young and old healthy controls studied at rest and during head-up tilt, using causal and non-causal frequency domain measures of the baroreflex sensitivity. Our results indicate: (i) the importance of using a causal approach that takes into account not only feedback but also feedforward effects in the study of interactions between the heart period and the arterial pressure; (ii) the compromised capacity of baroreceptors to control SAP fluctuations in post-AMI patients, both at rest a…

Optimism is thought to be beneficial for health, and these effects may be mediated through modifications in psychophysiological stress reactivity. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with reduced cardiovascular responses to stress and heightened cortisol over the day. This study assessed the relationships between optimism, stress responsivity, and daily cortisol output in people with T2D. A total of 140 participants with T2D were exposed to laboratory stress. Heart rate (HR), systolic (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and cortisol were measured throughout the session. Cortisol output over the day was also assessed. Optimism and self-reported health were measured using the revised Life …

Plasticizer extraction of Taxol infusion solution from various infusion devices.

1996

Taxol solution extracts the plasticizer DEHP (di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. In order to minimize patient exposure to DEHP, Taxol solutions should be prepared and administered in PVC-free materials. Particulate matter may form in Taxol infusion solution over time, so that in-line filtration with microporous membranes not greater than 0.22 microns is advisable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability of various administration- and in-line filter-sets for Taxol application. The extent of leached DEHP was determined using a Reversed Phase HPLC assay specific for DEHP. The four tested administration-sets, labeled as PVC-free, were all found…

Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia applicability in myocardial infarction prevention and recovery.

2012

Abstract Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (IHH) has been the focus of important research in cardioprotection, and it has been associated with several mechanisms. Intermittent hypobaric hypoxia inhibits prolyl hydroxylases (PHD) activity, increasing the stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) and activating crucial adaptative genes. It has been hence suggested that IHH might be a simple intervention, which may offer a thoughtful benefits to patients with acute myocardial infarction and no complications. Nevertheless, several doubts exist as to whether IHH is a really safe technique, with little to no complications in post-myocardial infarction patients. Intermittent hypobaric hypox…

PUMP AS TURBINE (PAT) IN INTERMITTENT DISTRIBUTION NETWORKS

2012

A hydraulic model was performed in order to evaluate potential energy recovery resulting by the use of centrifugal pump as turbines (PAT) in the water distribution network characterized by the presence of private tanks. The model integrates the Enhanced Global Gradient Algorithm (EGGA) (Todini [1], Giustolisi et al. [2]), with a pressure driven model (Criminisi et al. [3]) that entails a more realistic representation of the influence of the private tanks filling and emptying process in the network behaviour. The model was applied to real case study: a district metered area in Palermo (Italy). Namely three different scenarios were analyzed and compared with the actual scenario (Scenario 0 - …
