Three-dimensional structure of hepatitis B virus core particles determined by electron cryomicroscopy

1994

Human hepatitis B virus core protein expressed in E. coli assembles into two sizes of particle. We have determined their three-dimensional structures by electron cryomicroscopy and image processing. The large and small particles correspond to triangulation number T = 4 and T = 3 dimer clustered packings, containing 240 and 180 protein subunits, respectively. The local packing of subunits is very similar in the two sizes of particle and shows holes or channels through the shell. The native viral core particle packages RNA and is active in reverse transcription to DNA. The holes we observe may provide access for the necessary small molecules. Shells assembled from the intact core protein cont…

Virtual Currency: New Step in Monetary Development

2016

Abstract Money is perhaps the best recognized and at the same time less understood figure of economy. During the evolution of a monetary science starting from the eighteenth century and fundamental works on such questions as true nature and main functions of money, the approach and theories about monetary science have changed significantly up to date not reaching the final state. The twenty-first century can be characterized with a vast development of technologies and the increase use of the internet which significantly succeeded the development of monetary system introducing a new phenomenon - virtual currencies. While remaining rather illusive, virtual currencies have been broadly noted b…

An updated version of the computational package SIMPRE that uses the standard conventions for Stevens crystal field parameters

2014

The crystal field approach used by SIMPRE is analyzed, verifying the exactness of the results concerning energy levels and magnetic properties calculated by the package. To coincide with the prevailing conventions, we reformulate the presentation of the crystal field parameters, so that the results are now, also from a formal point of view, strictly correct. New calculations are presented to test the influence of neglecting the excited J states, a common but critical approximation employed by SIMPRE. For that, we examine the case of Er(trensal) complex (H3 trensal = 2,2',2″-tris(salicylideneimino)triethylamine) where the influence of this approximation is found to be minimal. A patched vers…

<title>Electronic excitations and defects in fluoroperovskite LiBaF<formula><inf><roman>3</roman></inf></formu…

2003

A survey of the present situation with respect to knowledge of lattice defects, electronic excitations, such as excitons and localized excitons, as well as energy storage and transfer phenomena in LiBaF3 crystals is given. Both phenomenological models and experimental interpretations of optical absorption bands, tentatively associated with F-type (electron) centers created by X-ray or electron irradiation, is reviewed. Interpretation of three radiative processes (super-fast core-valence transitions, slow trapped exciton luminescence and luminescence of structure defects) observed in undoped LiBaF3 crystals is analyzed with respect to practical application. Attention is paid to the behavior …

Vacuum-ultraviolet absorption of hydrogenated and deuterated silanol groups and interstitial water molecules in amorphousSiO2

2005

Vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) absorption cross sections of hydrogenated and deuterated silanol groups (SiOX, where $\mathrm{X}=\mathrm{H}$ or D) as well as interstitial water molecules $({\mathrm{X}}_{2}\mathrm{O})$ in amorphous $\mathrm{Si}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ $(a\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Si}{\mathrm{O}}_{2})$ were determined between photon energies of 7 and $8.2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$. The absorption bands for the deuterated species are blueshifted compared to those for the hydrogenated ones by $\ensuremath{\sim}0.1\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{to}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}0.2\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$ as a result of a decrease in the zero-point energy associat…

Linguistic interpretation of speech errors

2016

The paper is an attempt to illustrate the linguistic interpretation of speech, known that it remains insufficiently resolved, especially for Romanian. The cause is given by the multitude of criteria that can or should be considered important in speech processing. The aim of this study is to develope a computational tool in order to identify the possible errors related to the morphosintactic structure of speech. Our goal is to assist users who can receive automatically different suggestions that can help them to improve the quality of their text. Thus, we chose an interdisciplinary approach through speech analysis that brings together the key fields of linguistics, computer science and so on…

Política de la supervivencia / Politics of Survival

2017

Target frames in British hotel websites

2015

This article centres on four-word phrase frames in British hospitality websites. Our aim is to identify those frames that are specific to this website genre, which we call target frames. Each phrase frame represents an identical sequence of words except for one variable word, that is A*BC or AB*D. The words that fill the slot, marked with an asterisk, are called fillers. We used a corpus-driven approach using KfNgram software to identify the phrase frames in our corpus (COMETVAL). We regard phrase frames as genre-specific when they are significantly more frequent than those found in the written section of the BNC, which represents General British English. We further filtered our selection o…

Laughing with machines : philosophical analysis on the preconditions of sense of humour for machines

2021

This article will analyse the preconditions of sense of humour for artificial intelligence. Can artificial intelligence have a sense of humour? Is there a difference between human and machine laughter? Some machines already fulfil certain conditions which are associated with the human sense of humour: on the most superficial level machines appear to laugh and produce jokes, and they recognize sarcasm and punchlines, and they can evaluate funniness. In short, artificial intelligence is already able to recognize humour, and reacts to it accordingly. Furthermore, people laugh with humorous machines. However, it is still uncertain whether artificial intelligence can have a sense of humour or no…
