Paradigm of tunable clustering using Binarization of Consensus Partition Matrices (Bi-CoPaM) for gene discovery

2013

Clustering analysis has a growing role in the study of co-expressed genes for gene discovery. Conventional binary and fuzzy clustering do not embrace the biological reality that some genes may be irrelevant for a problem and not be assigned to a cluster, while other genes may participate in several biological functions and should simultaneously belong to multiple clusters. Also, these algorithms cannot generate tight cluster…

Semi-automated and interactive segmentation of contrast-enhancing masses on breast DCE-MRI using spatial fuzzy clustering

2022

Abstract Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is the most sensitive imaging modality for breast cancer detection and is increasingly playing a key role in lesion characterization. In this context, accurate and reliable quantification of the shape and extent of breast cancer is crucial in clinical research environments. Since conventional lesion delineation procedures are still mostly manual, automated segmentation approaches can improve this time-consuming and operator-dependent task by annotating the regions of interest in a reproducible manner. In this work, a semi-automated and interactive approach based on the spatial Fuzzy C-Means (sFCM) algorithm is proposed, used to segme…

Weighted Fuzzy Clustering for Online Detection of Application DDoS Attacks in Encrypted Network Traffic

2016

Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks are one of the most serious threats to today’s high-speed networks. These attacks can quickly incapacitate a targeted business, costing victims millions of dollars in lost revenue and productivity. In this paper, we present a novel method which allows us to timely detect application-layer DDoS attacks that utilize encrypted protocols by applying an anomaly-based approach to statistics extracted from network packets. The method involves construction of a model of normal user behavior with the help of weighted fuzzy clustering. The construction algorithm is self-adaptive and allows one to update the model every time when a new portion of network tr…

Comparison of Internal Clustering Validation Indices for Prototype-Based Clustering

2017

Clustering is an unsupervised machine learning and pattern recognition method. In general, in addition to revealing hidden groups of similar observations and clusters, their number needs to be determined. Internal clustering validation indices estimate this number without any external information. The purpose of this article is to evaluate, empirically, characteristics of a representative set of internal clustering validation indices with many datasets. The prototype-based clustering framework includes multiple, classical and robust, statistical estimates of cluster location so that the overall setting of the paper is novel. General observations on the quality of validation indices and on t…

Fuzzy fixed points of generalized F2-geraghty type fuzzy mappings and complementary results

2016

The aim of this paper is to introduce generalized F2-Geraghty type fuzzy mappings on a metric space for establishing the existence of fuzzy fixed points of such mappings. As an application of our result, we obtain the existence of common fuzzy fixed point for a generalized F2-Geraghty type fuzzy hybrid pair. These results unify, generalize and complement various known comparable results in the literature. An example and an application to theoretical computer science are presented to support the theory proved herein. Also, to suggest further research on fuzzy mappings, a Feng–Liu type theorem is proved.

A heuristic fuzzy algorithm for assessing and managing tourism sustainability

2019

“Smartness” and “sustainability” are gaining growing attention from both practitioners and policy makers. “Smartness” and “sustainability” assessments are of crucial importance for directing, in a systemic perspective, the decision-making process toward sustainability and smart growth objectives. Sustainability assessment is a major challenge due to the multidisciplinary aspects involved that make the evaluation process complex and hinder the effectiveness of available monitoring tools. To achieve the assessment objective, we introduce an enhanced fuzzy logic-based framework for handling the inherent uncertainty and vagueness of the involved variables: we apply our approach to Italy, and we…

Keypoint descriptor matching with context-based orientation estimation

2014

Abstract This paper presents a matching strategy to improve the discriminative power of histogram-based keypoint descriptors by constraining the range of allowable dominant orientations according to the context of the scene under observation. This can be done when the descriptor uses a circular grid and quantized orientation steps, by computing or providing a global reference orientation based on the feature matches. The proposed matching strategy is compared with the standard approaches used with the SIFT and GLOH descriptors and the recent rotation invariant MROGH and LIOP descriptors. A new evaluation protocol based on an approximated overlap error is presented to provide an effective an…

A GPU-accelerated augmented Lagrangian based L1-mean curvature Image denoising algorithm implementation

2015

This paper presents a graphics processing unit (GPU) implementation of a recently published augmented Lagrangian based L1-mean curvature image denoising algorithm. The algorithm uses a particular alternating direction method of multipliers to reduce the related saddle-point problem to an iterative sequence of four simpler minimization problems. Two of these subproblems do not contain the derivatives of the unknown variables and can therefore be solved point-wise without inter-process communication. Inparticular, this facilitates the efficient solution of the subproblem that deals with the non-convex term in the original objective function by modern GPUs. The two remaining subproblems are so…

Search for neutralino pair production at root s = 189 GeV

2001

A search for pair-production of neutralinos at a LEP centre-of-mass energy of 189 GeV gave no evidence for a signal. This limits the neutralino production cross-section and excludes regions in the parameter space of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM).

Self-consistent GW calculations of electronic transport in thiol- and amine-linked molecular junctions

2011

The electronic conductance of a benzene molecule connected to gold electrodes via thiol, thiolate, or amino anchoring groups is calculated using nonequilibrium Green functions in combination with the fully self-consistent GW approximation for exchange and correlation. The calculated conductance of benzenedithiol and benzenediamine is one-fifth that predicted by standard density functional theory (DFT), in very good agreement with experiments. In contrast, the widely studied benzenedithiolate structure is found to have a significantly higher conductance due to the unsaturated sulfur bonds. These findings suggest that more complex gold-thiolate structures where the thiolate anchors are chemic…
