Statistical methods for texture analysis applied to agronomical images
2008
For activities of agronomical research institute, the land experimentations are essential and provide relevant information on crops such as disease rate, yield components, weed rate... Generally accurate, they are manually done and present numerous drawbacks, such as penibility, notably for wheat ear counting. In this case, the use of color and/or texture image processing to estimate the number of ears per square metre can be an improvement. Then, different image segmentation techniques based on feature extraction have been tested using textural information with first and higher order statistical methods. The Run Length method gives the best results closed to manual countings with an averag…
Merging the transform step and the quantization step for Karhunen-Loeve transform based image compression
2000
Transform coding is one of the most important methods for lossy image compression. The optimum linear transform - known as Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) - was difficult to implement in the classic way. Now, due to continuous improvements in neural network's performance, the KLT method becomes more topical then ever. We propose a new scheme where the quantization step is merged together with the transform step during the learning phase. The new method is tested for different levels of quantization and for different types of quantizers. Experimental results presented in the paper prove that the new proposed scheme always gives better results than the state-of-the-art solution.
Some applications of a theorem of Shirshov to language theory
1983
Some applications of a theorem of Shirshov to language theory are given: characterization of regular languages, characterization of bounded languages, and a sufficient condition for a language to be Parikh-bounded.
Terrain data compression using wavelet-tiled pyramids for online 3D terrain visualization
2013
Last years have witnessed the widespread use of online terrain visualization applications. However, the significant improvements achieved in sensing technologies have allowed an increasing size of the terrain databases. These increasing sizes represent a serious drawback when terrain data must be transmitted and rendered at interactive rates. In this paper, we propose a novel wavelet-tiled pyramid for compressing terrain data that replaces the traditional multiresolution pyramid usually used in wavelet compression schemes. The new wavelet-tiled pyramid modifies the wavelet analysis and synthesis processes, allowing an efficient transmission and reconstruction of terrain data in those applic…
Adaptation of a German Multidimensional Networking Scale into English
2011
Networking refers to building and maintaining personal contacts in order to obtain resources that, in turn, enhance one’s career success and work performance. This study reports the translation and adaptation of a multifaceted German networking scale ( Wolff & Moser, 2006 ) into English and focuses on the equivalence of the two language versions. Going beyond the often used translation-backtranslation method, we used a parallel translation-backtranslation method in combination with two expert committees to arrive at the English scale version, aiming to obtain at least structural equivalence. We utilize a bilingual sample (N = 76) as well as monolingual samples from the US (N = 174) and…
A new criterion for determining the expansion center for circular-harmonic filters
1995
A new criterion for locating the expansion center of circular harmonic filters is presented. The innovation consists in the use of the information provided by both the circular harmonic energy map and the peak to correlation energy map of the object to be detected. The choice of an expansion center with a high value of peak to correlation energy ensures a good discrimination capability of the filter. In addition, we choose a point which is a local maximum for the energy map. An improvement of the discrimination ability is obtained with respect to previous methods.
Processing privacy information and decision-making for smartphone apps among young German smartphone users
2018
While privacy behaviour is generally equated with self-disclosure, other forms of behaviour that potentially infringe an individual’s privacy, such as downloading an app, are being neglected by research. We seek to fill this gap by modelling app decision-making within a dual-process model of the attitude–behaviour relationship and the role of privacy attitudes in two kinds of information processing: (1) spontaneous, heuristic processes that rely on automated attitude activation and (2) elaborate, cognitive processes that rely on behavioural intentions to guide behaviour. We used a quasi-experimental design to investigate app decision-making processes for N = 89 participants in N = 254 decis…
GHOST: GRADIENT HISTOGRAM OF SPECTRAL TEXTURE
2021
International audience; A gradient-based texture feature for hyperspectral image is formulated with straightforward application to grayscale and color images. Processed in full band, GHOST is expressed as a four-dimensional probability density distribution encompassing joint metrological assessment of spectral and spatial properties. Its performance is close to Opponent Band Local Binary Pattern (OBLBP) in HyTexiLa texture classification (91 %-99 % accuracy) with feature size 0.2 % of OBLBP's.
Phantomuntersuchung zur Optimierung der Spiral-CT und 3 D-Rekonstruktion des Tracheobronchialsystems
1996
PURPOSE To optimise three-dimensional spiral CT of the tracheobronchial tree using adequate acquisition and reconstruction parameters for spiral CT of the chest. MATERIAL AND METHODS Qualitative and quantitative assessment of different 3 D reconstructions of two test objects of the tracheobronchial tree depending on section thickness, reconstruction interval, pitch, and reconstruction algorithm used in spiral CT (Siemens, Somatom plus S) of the chest. The frequency of volume and stairstep artifacts was evaluated. The 3 D reconstructions were generated using a seeded VOI-technique (Allegro, ISG). RESULTS Reduction of artifacts was achieved by decreasing section thickness. Increasing overlap …
Number transcoding in children: A functional analysis
1994
French-speaking second-grade children from France and Wallonia were asked to write down in the Arabic code, numbers orally presented at six successive one-month-spaced sessions. The evolution of the children's production (patterns of correct responses and errors) is analysed and tentatively interpreted through the model of number and calculation processing developed by McCloskey in adult neuropsychology. In order to evaluate their number production and comprehension mechanisms the children were furthermore submitted to other number processing tasks. It is tentatively concluded that the children's difficulties in the Arabic written task were localized at the level of the production of the Ar…
