Reflecting on the Tensions of Research Utilization: Understanding the Coupling of Academic and User Knowledge

2018

This paper addresses debate of how research is utilized that questions measuring ‘acts of use’ of research (patents, spin-offs, or license income). A science system is a progressive business where research builds upon diverse existing research and knowledge. The extent of research utilization is determined by the extent to which prior research can feed into research that ultimately leads to acts of use. We use the term ‘knowledge transformers’ to refer to research users that transform academic knowledge into the socio-economic domain, and define ‘usability’ of prior research as the ease with which it may contribute to research that knowledge transformers are able to absorb. We argue that to…

Research-in-progress

2012

In this paper, we present a research-in-progress study where we are revisiting a well known knowledge-level framework of understanding (i.e. knowledge) of a system proposed by Olfman et al. (2006). The catalyst for this relook was the anomalies and incongruencies that surfaced when we tried to apply this framework in another study whose aim was to examine how hermeneutic reflection helps in learning. While the framework proved a useful vehicle to carry out hermeneutic analysis, it also proved inadequate in accounting for some significant aspects of what constitutes understanding of a system. A closer look at the data revealed that other theoretical premises could not only provide a better i…

Case study on exceptions

1995

Discusses exceptions in office work and the link between rules and exceptions in office information systems. After describing the nature of exceptions, examines their effect on rules. Provides a case study of a factory purchasing process, including unmatched invoices, costs, classification and strategic changes.

Digitalizing Management Accounting

2019

“Digitalization” is a term that is widely used to describe various technology-induced organizational change processes. These range from those that increase efficiency through the use of technology (e. g., digitalizing paper-based workflows, e.g. invoicing) to disruptive changes to existing business models by employing new technological possibilities (e. g., platforms such as Airbnb or Uber).

Test-driven development in education

2008

Test-Driven Development (TDD) was applied in educational setting right after it became well-known as a key practice of Extreme Programming (XP). Basically, there are many studies reporting positive experiences on TDD applied in different levels of a curriculum. In this paper, we discuss the role of TDD in education through the students' experiences. In our experiment, a challenging programming task was applied in order to see what kind of difficulties the students would encounter and discuss. The students' answers revealed several topics that require a careful treatment in teaching to avoid conceptual confusion. For example, the topics include the scalability of TDD, extent of single test, …

Extending the international new venture phenomenon to digital platform providers : A longitudinal case study

2018

People increasingly interact with services enabled by digital platforms. This has been a consequence of the digitalization of artifacts, which has transmuted traditional businesses into digital forms. With the increasing digitalization and modularization of services, digital platforms have given many digital service providers possibilities to scale globally, and to rapidly transcend national borders by serving multi-sided markets. However, we still know very little about how digital platform providers actually internationalize their services, or how they make their platforms available for global markets. In this paper, we contribute to the increasing literature on digital-based INVs, examin…

How to Raise Different Game Collaboration Activities : The Association Between Game Mechanics, Players' Roles and Collaboration Processes

2018

Background. Designing collaborative three-dimensional (3D) learning games is one way to enhance the quality of learning and respond to the needs of working life. However, there is little research on how to apply different game mechanics to support different educational aims.Aim. This study determines how game mechanics implemented within computer-supported collaboration roles (scripted vs. emergent) are associated with the emergence of collaboration.Method. The research at hand applies both qualitative and quantitative content analysis. The target group consisted of 15 vocational school students. The data were gathered by recording the groups’ discussions and saving the game logs. A total o…

Embedded controlled language to facilitate information extraction from eGov policies

2015

The goal of this paper is to propose a system that can extract formal semantic knowledge representation from natural language eGov policies. We present an architecture that allows for extracting Controlled Natural Language (CNL) statements from heterogeneous natural language texts with the ability to support multilinguality. The approach is based on the concept of embedded CNLs.

A Numerical Method for the Analysis of Plane-Strain Forming Processes with Unilateral Constraints

1983

The Authors propose a numerical model for the solution of plane-strain forming processes, based on the linearization of the yield surface. This allows to employ the linear programming technique for the solution of the variational problem derived from the application of the upper-bound theorem. Such a model permits to take into account the unilateral constraints in a very simple way. Therefore it is well suited to solve a large class of problems, such as sheet forming, in which the unilateral constraints are often present.

Towards a Blended Learning Model for Teaching and Learning Computer Programming: A Case Study

2008

Blended learning is becoming an attractive model in higher education as new innovative information technologies are becoming increasingly available. However, just blending face-to-face learning with information technologies cannot provide effective teaching and efficient solutions for learning. To be successful, blended learning must rely on solid learning theory and pedagogical strategies. In addition, there is a need for a design-based research approach to explore blending learning through successive cycles of experimentations, where the shortcomings of each cycle are identified, redesigned, and reevaluated. This paper reports on a study conducted on a blended learn- ing model in Java pro…
