Sleep HERMES: a European training project for respiratory sleep medicine

2011

The clinical characterisation and description of the obstructive sleep apnoea/hypopnoea syndrome (OSAHS) and related syndromes have been revealed by several epidemiological studies conducted in the late 20th and 21st centuries. These highly prevalent syndromes affect about 9% of middle-aged males and 4% of females. These syndromes have serious medical and social consequences, such as cardiovascular or metabolic diseases and even premature death. Consequently, respiratory sleep medicine has evolved and progressed rapidly within the sleep medicine field over the last decades. New diagnostic and therapeutic techniques appeared in response to an increasing number of patients and clinical interv…

Impact of a Supervised Training Course on Spirometry Competency for Primary Care Pediatricians

2020

Objective: Spirometry is the most commonly performed lung function test, and performance, adherence to acceptability and repeatability criteria, and accurate interpretation of results help optimize the test's usefulness. This study aimed to measure the effects of spirometry training courses supported by the Italian Pediatric Respiratory Society (IPRS) on primary care pediatricians' (PCP) knowledge of spirometry test quality, ability to interpret results, and overall degree of satisfaction with the course. Methods: Of the six face-to-face courses, four lasted two days and two lasted one day: mean duration of theoretical lessons was five and four hours respectively; and practical sessions last…

The potential role of SP-D as an early biomarker of severity of asthma

2021

Surfactant decreases the surface tension of peripheral airways and modulates the immunological responses of the lung. The alterations of surfactant due to the airway inflammation suggest a role in the pathogenesis of asthma. We aim to test the hypothesis that serum levels of SP-A (Surfactant Protein A) and SP-D (Surfactant Protein-D) are altered in patients with mild asthma compared to healthy controls and those alterations are related to functional abnormalities of peripheral airways, which are an early marker of progression of asthma. In this pilot study, we recruited 20 mild asthmatics and 10 healthy controls. We measured serum SP-A and SP-D and all subjects underwent clinical, lung func…

phi-Best proximity point theorems and applications to variational inequality problems

2017

The main concern of this study is to introduce the notion of $$\varphi $$ -best proximity points and establish the existence and uniqueness of $$\varphi $$ -best proximity point for non-self mappings satisfying $$(F,\varphi )$$ -proximal and $$(F,\varphi )$$ -weak proximal contraction conditions in the context of complete metric spaces. Some examples are supplied to support the usability of our results. As applications of the obtained results, some new best proximity point results in partial metric spaces are presented. Furthermore, sufficient conditions to ensure the existence of a unique solution for a variational inequality problem are also discussed.

Generically split projective homogeneous varieties. II

2012

AbstractThis article gives a complete classification of generically split projective homogeneous varieties. This project was begun in our previous article [PS10], but here we remove all restrictions on the characteristic of the base field, give a new uniform proof that works in all cases and in particular includes the case PGO2n+ which was missing in [PS10].

Maps to Projective Space

2000

One of the main goals of algebraic geometry is to understand the geometry of smooth projective varieties. For instance, given a smooth projective surface X, we can ask a host of questions whose answers might help illuminate its geometry. What kinds of curves does the surface contain? Is it covered by rational curves, that is, curves birationally equivalent to ℙ1? If not, how many rational curves does it contain, and how do they intersect each other? Or is it more natural to think of the surface as a family of elliptic curves (genus-1 Riemann surfaces) or as some other family? Is the surface isomorphic to ℙ2 or some other familiar variety on a dense set? What other surfaces are birationally …

Homological Projective Duality for Determinantal Varieties

2016

In this paper we prove Homological Projective Duality for crepant categorical resolutions of several classes of linear determinantal varieties. By this we mean varieties that are cut out by the minors of a given rank of a n x m matrix of linear forms on a given projective space. As applications, we obtain pairs of derived-equivalent Calabi-Yau manifolds, and address a question by A. Bondal asking whether the derived category of any smooth projective variety can be fully faithfully embedded in the derived category of a smooth Fano variety. Moreover we discuss the relation between rationality and categorical representability in codimension two for determinantal varieties.
