Power allocation optimization in OFDM-based cognitive radios based on sensing information

2011

Owing to the non-zero probability of the missed detection and false alarm of active primary transmission, a certain degree of performance degradation of the primary user (PU) from cognitive radio users (CRs) is unavoidable. In this paper, we consider OFDM-based communication systems and present efficient algorithms to maximize the total rate of the CR by optimizing jointly both the detection operation and the power allocation, taking into account the influence of the probabilities of missed detection and false alarm, namely, the sensing accuracy. The optimization problem can be formulated as a two-variable non-convex problem, which can be solved approximately by using an alternating directi…

Improved Global-Local Method for Ultrasonic Guided Wave Scattering Predictions in Composite Waveguides and Defects

2023

Abstract As structures increase in complexity, in the use of high-performing materials and designs, their health assessment becomes increasingly challenging. Ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) have shown to be very promising in the inspection of large (i.e. aerospace components) attenuating (i.e. composite materials) structures and have been successfully employed for damage detection in a variety of fields. The intrinsic complex nature of UGWs, due to their dispersive behavior, combined with the structural complexity of the applications, though, makes the interpretation of UGW inspections very challenging. Numerical simulations of UGW propagation become crucial to this end and have been address…

Experimental nonlinear electrical reaction-diffusion lattice

1998

International audience; A nonlinear electrical reaction-diffusion lattice modelling the Nagumo equation is presented. It is shown that this system supports front propagation with a given velocity. This propagation is observed experimentally using a video acquisition system, and the measured velocity of the front is in perfect agreement with the theoretical prediction.

Opportunistic Germination Behaviour of Gypsophila (Caryophyllaceae) in Two Priority Habitats from Semi-arid Mediterranean Steppes

2011

Gypsophila tomentosa and G. struthium are closely related species, characteristic of two European priority habitats, salt and gypsum inland steppes, respectively. Germination strategies of the two taxa were investigated in plants from two nearby populations, growing under the same climatic conditions but on different types of soil, and belonging to different plant communities. Their germination patterns were studied at five constant temperatures in darkness: 5oC, 10oC, 15oC, 20oC and 25oC, and the base temperature and the thermal time requirement were calculated. As the distribution area of both species is subjected to a Mediterranean continental climate with significant differences between…

The passive state: A protective mechanism for information in working memory tasks.

2021

Memory representations can be stored in a passive state in a visual working memory (VWM) task. However, it remains unclear whether the representations stored in the passive state are prone to interference and decay. To explore this issue, we asked participants to successively remember two sets of memory items (M1 and M2) in three test manners: a combined test (both M1 and M2 are probed simultaneously), a backward test (probe M2 first and M1 second), or a forward test (probe M1 first and M2 second). We found that the contralateral delay activity (CDA) amplitude after the onset of M2 only tracked M2 independently of M1 in the two separate tests (Experiments 1-3), and the accuracy of M1 was we…

Wave energy assessment in Sicily (Italy)

2015

Abstract This research presents an estimation of wave energy potential in Sicily (Italy) carried out using both buoy wave measurements from Rete Ondametrica Nazionale (RON), the Italian Government wave buoy network, and wave parameter data by ERA-INTERIM, a recent meteorological reanalysis project of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Starting from these offshore data, we first identified the western part of Sicily as the area with a higher availability of offshore wave energy; subsequently, we selected a study area in the western part of the south coast and assessed the nearshore potential energy by performing propagation using a spectral model (SWAN). The near…

Joint LMMSE equalizer for HSDPA in full-rate space time transmit diversity schemes

2005

This contribution presents a joint linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) equalizer for full-rate space-time transmit diversity multi-code schemes based on W-CDMA, featuring two and four transmit antennas. Specifically, high-rate, high load systems are targeted, in order to analyze the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) of 3GPP Release 6. We derive an equivalent transmission scheme to equalize the received sufficient statistic in a single stage. To reduce the effects of multipath and multiuser interference, and to provide spatial and frequency diversity at the receiver, an LMMSE equalizer is employed. Computer simulations confirm that the proposed schemes achieve robust performance…

A space-division time-division multiple access scheme for high throughput provisioning in WLANs

2005

Directional antennas may dramatically increase the capacity of a Wireless LAN by allowing several stations to simultaneously communicate. Since deployment of directive/smart antennas on the customer's terminals is awkward (for technological, cost, robustness, and convenience reasons) it is of interest to deploy advanced antenna solutions only at the Access Point. When omnidirectional transmissions are used at the Mobile Stations, the asynchronous nature of the 802.11 MAC handshake structurally limits the possibility to exploit spatial reuse. Significant throughput enhancements can be achieved only at the expense of redesigning (part of) the 802.11 MAC protocol: mainly a form of synchronizat…

Time dispersion characterization for UWB mobile radio channels between 3.1 and 10.6 GHz

2007

In this paper, a characterization of the UWB mobile radio channel time dispersion is presented. The results provided were obtained from a measurement campaign carried out in a typical indoor office scenario in the band from 3.1 to 10.6 GHz. Time dispersion metrics as delay spread, coherence bandwidth, delay interval and delay window, in both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) conditions are provided.
