Cathodic behaviour of dicationic imidazolium bromides: the role of the spacer

2019

The cathodic reduction of dicationic imidazolium bromides, whose spacer is either an aliphatic chain or a xylyl group, leads to the formation of the corresponding N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which were isolated as the corresponding thiones, after reaction with elemental sulfur. The behaviour of the dications was compared with the corresponding monocations. The behaviour of dicarbenes depends on the nature of the spacer. This study evidenced that dicarbenes deriving from xylyl dications are less stable than the corresponding aliphatic ones (giving lower yields in thiones), due to a debenzylation reaction. On the other hand, the yields in thiones starting from aliphatic dications are high…

Dannosità e controllo di Rhagoletis cerasi (L.) in ceraseti biologici della Sicilia occidentale.

2011

Damage and control of Rhagoletis cerasi (L.) in organic cherry orchards in Western Sicily The study was carried out in 2009, 2010 and 2011 in organic cherry orchards in Western Sicily, were the control of Rhagoletis cerasi (L.), the cherry fly, is a problem for medium-late ripening cultivars. Presence and infestation of the dipteran were monitored on local cultivars and the effectiveness of pyrethrum, allowed in organic farming, was tested, comparing it with net bags. The presence of the cherry fly was recorded in all cherry orchards except in one isolated and recently planted. The infestation on fruits was not very high; it was absent until the end of May. Nets drastically reduced the infe…

Wrongful birth and wrongful life. Floodgate argument and the balancing of conytrasting rights in courts law making

2017

The decision analyzed affects damages forthe born child because of the impossibility for the mother to exercise the right to abortion, as the diagnosis was missing and she was not aware of the hard risk for her physical and psychological health coming from the birth of a child affected by “down syndrome”. The study starts from the distinction between: a)Wrongful birth: the personal damages suffered by pregnant women, who have not had the possibility of self-determining in the prosecution of the pregnancy in case of pathological processes of the fetus; in particular, in those cases when a disease exposes herself and her health to a severe risk (a pre-condition for abortion, according to the …

Moral Language in Child Protection Research

2017

This article is based on a philosophical analysis of moral language in academic journal articles that concern child death cases. The analysis shows that research of child protection is a value-committed practice, and the language use reflects this in various ways. Direct moral language is relatively rare, and moral values are often implicitly referred to. Values in social work research bear resemblance to moral philosophical stances. peerReviewed

Critical Assessment of European Agenda for the Collaborative Economy, on behalf of European Parliament. In-Depth Analysis for the IMCO Committee

2017

The research paper describes the main legal challenges for regulating the collaborative economy and evaluates the definition of, and elucidates how the existing body of EU law applies to collaborative economy business models. In the last part, the paper elaborates on how a regulatory framework for non- professional provision of services and prosumers should look like and makes a few concrete proposals for future policies. This paper was commissioned by the Policy Department A for Economic, Scientific and Quality of Life Policies upon request of the European Parliament ́s Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection.

A Methodology for Protection of Trees Against Lightning Strikes as a Measure to Prevent Fires and Loss of Human Life

2021

Some regions may be characterized by a very low annual lightning ground flash density, and yet lightning strikes seem to have been in those areas the cause of widespread wildfires in forested areas. Due to global climate change, these occurrences seem to be an increasing threat. In this paper, the authors discuss the withstand capability of trees against lightning and introduce the criteria for the deployment of tree lightning protection systems (TLPS) to protect forested areas, where deemed necessary by the tree risk assessment. This work analytically identifies the critical trunk radius of the tree below which the tree may explode in the case of a lightning strike and ignite the surroundi…

European protection of fundamental rights in environmental matters. Contribution to the study of the relationship between law and science

2019

The prevention and sanction aspects of the protection against the pollution is manifested in Europe by the combination and complementarity of two matters (environment and fundamental rights) and two legal orders (European Union and Council of Europe). They consist of the protection of the environment that a person can expect to obtain in the context of the protection of these rights. They allow the management of "new risks" and the assimilation of pollution to a violation of a fundamental right under conditions including scientific knowledge. Protection of fundamental rights in environmental matters raises the question of the place given to scientific demonstration in jurisdictional work an…
