The role of different game-genres in predicting internet gaming disorder (IGD)

2020

Introduction: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is a new diagnosis in DSM 5 worth of research. New potentially addictive features are emerging in pay- and free-to-play videogames, involving different at-risk populations of gamers. However, few studies have examined whether and how different game-genres can contribute to the risk of IGD. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate how game-genres can predict IGD, accounting for alexithymia scores, time-related play- ing habits, and other predictors. Methods: Participants were gamers joining online communities, surveyed about which games they played more than 20 hours in their lifetime, time-variables, other stressors and alexithymia scores. A s…

The Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices in Healthy Children: A Qualitative Approach

2020

Studies on the structure of intelligence refer to two main theoretical models: the first one considers intelligence as a unitary construct, the second one assumes the involvement of a plurality of factors. Studies using Raven’s Coloured Progressive Matrices (RCPM) tasks have often highlighted the involvement of different cognitive abilities and brain structures, but in the clinical setting, RCPM measurement continues to be used as a single score. The current study aimed to analyse the RCPM performance following qualitative clustering, in order to provide an interpretation of the intelligence assessment through a factorial criterion. The RCPM have been administered to a large group of typica…

Dones i ciència.

Amnesia and the hippocampus

2006

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Long-term memory impairments have great medical significance and a considerable health and economic burden. Understanding their cognitive and neuroanatomical underpinnings is of crucial importance. Severe amnesia is usually observed following bilateral hippocampal pathology. This review addresses the precise role of the hippocampus and related medial temporal lobe structures in amnesia. RECENT FINDINGS: Disagreements exist over whether, following selective hippocampal damage: retrograde amnesia for episodic memories is temporally limited or extensive and ungraded; anterograde amnesia involves both recollective and familiarity processes. It is accepted that material specif…

Influence of a specific aquatic adapted physical activity in a child with Autism Spectrum Disorders: A case study

2019

Aquatic environment offers an exciting and motivating place for children and aquatic exercise programs provide an appropriate setting for early educational interventions in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a specific Multi-systemic Aquatic Therapy (CI-MAT) on gross motor and adaptive skills in a child with ASD. The study was divided into three phases: baseline, 12-week CI-MAT program and Post-Test. Child was administered a battery of tests incorporating anthropometric measurements, gross motor development test (TGM test), Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS) and Psychoeducational Profile (PEP-3) before and after a …

2021

In this study, we tested the validity of the Italian version of the Prejudice Against Asylum Seekers Scale (PAAS), which measures classic and modern prejudice toward asylum seekers. A sample of 740 participants (227 males and 513 females, aged 18-67) completed the scale. The results were consistent with the original 2-factor model providing an acceptable fit for the data. This study, however, suggests taking out two items from the scale. The two correlated factors showed significant associations with right-wing authoritarianism, social dominance orientation, and national identification. No gender differences emerged, but only those related to religious affiliation, age, and political orient…

Shaping pseudoneglect with transcranial cerebellar direct current stimulation and music listening

2015

Non-invasive brain stimulation modulates cortical excitability depending on the initial activation state of the structure being stimulated. Combination of cognitive with neurophysiological stimulations has been successfully employed to modulate responses of specific brain regions. The present research combined a neurophysiological pre-conditioning with a cognitive conditioning stimulation to modulate behavior. We applied this new state-dependency approach to investigate the cerebellar role in musical and spatial information processing, given that a link between musical perception and visuo-spatial abilities and a clear cerebellar involvement in music perception and visuo-spatial tasks have …

The matching effect in persuasive communication about lockdown

2022

Scientific literature about persuasion has shown that the effectiveness of persuasive communication may depend on the match between the affective or cognitive contents of the message and the affective (Need for Affect) or cognitive (Need for Cognition) orientation of the recipient. The present work aims to contribute to studying this effect by considering the context of health-related communication during the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Specifically, we aim to demonstrate that, when the message is characterized by affective and cognitive contents having the same (congruent message) or different valence (incongruent message), the attitude towards the target (i.e., a new lockdown) will be guided by…
