Competitive interaction between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and CHA2DS2-VASc score in predicting incident atrial fibrillation

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and an emerging risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF). CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores are significantly associated with incident AF independently of other risk factors. The aim of this study was to demonstrate a possible interaction between COPD and CHA2DS2-VASc in predicting incident AF. Contrast echocardiography of the left ventricle an independent predictor of pulmonary artery pressure?

To test the hypothesis that left heart opacification is dependent on pulmonary artery pressure, we analyzed consecutively 12 patients with normal and 8 patients with abnormal pulmonary artery pressure with a new lung capillary stable echo contrast agent. Patients underwent contrast echocardiographic examination within 6 hours before right and left heart catheterization with 200 mg/ml and 400 mg/ml SHU 508A intravenously. In contrast, with transesophageal echocardiography the thromboembolus itself can be visualized in the central parts of the pulmonary artery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced MR angiography (ce MRA) and helical CT angiography (CTA) of the pulmonary arteries in the preoperative workup of patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). The ce MRA and CTA studies of 32 patients were included in this retrospective evaluation. Image quality was scored by two independent blinded observers.
