Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel

1798

Phytochemical Profile and Antioxidant, Antiproliferative, and Antimicrobial Properties of Rubus idaeus Seed Powder

2022

In the context of the contemporary research on sustainable development and circular economy, the quest for effective strategies aimed at revaluation of waste and by-products generated in industrial and agricultural production becomes important. In this work, an ethanolic extract from red raspberry (Rubus idaeus) seed waste (WRSP) was evaluated for its phytochemical composition and functional properties in term of antioxidative, antiproliferative, and antimicrobial activities. Chemical composition of the extract was determined by both HPLC-ESI-MS/MS and spectrophotometric methods. Phytochemical analysis revealed that flavan-3-ols and flavonols were the major phenolic compounds contained in W…

Cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome and gastrointestinal defects: report on a newborn with 19p13.3 deletion including the MAP 2 K2 gene

2022

Abstract Background Cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome (CFCS) belongs to RASopathies, a group of conditions caused by mutations in genes encoding proteins of the rat sarcoma/mitogen-activated protein kinase (RAS/MAPK) pathway. It is a rare syndrome, with about 300 patients reported. Main clinical manifestations include facial dysmorphisms, growth failure, heart defects, developmental delay, and ectodermal abnormalities. Mutations (mainly missense) of four genes (BRAF, MAP 2 K1, MAP 2 K2, and KRAS) have been associated to CFCS. However, whole gene deletions/duplications and chromosomal microdeletions have been also reported. Specifically, 19p13.3 deletion including MAP 2 K2 gene are responsible…

Remarks on the Historiography of Mathematics

2021

In this paper, I examine aspects of the methodological debate that originated in 2010, when the distinguished historian of mathematics Sabetai Unguru reviewed Roshdi Rashed’s edition of the Arabic translation of Apollonius’ Conics. In his review, Unguru criticized what Rashed calls “l’usage instrumental d’une autre mathématique pour commenter une oeuvre ancienne”. I consider this debate very important and will try to place it within in the discussion of the so-called “geometric algebra” that goes back to the seventies, by tracing the contributions of the main figures who took part in it. Viability RT-qPCR to detect potentially infectious enteric viruses on heat-processed berries

2019

Berries have frequently been cited as causing gastroenteritis and acute hepatitis outbreaks due to enteric virus contamination, including human norovirus and hepatitis A virus (HAV). Model experiments were performed to evaluate the potential use of viability RT-qPCR to assess the thermal inactivation of norovirus genotype I (GI), GII, and HAV on raspberries, blueberries and strawberries. Initially, two viability markers, platinum chloride and propidium monoazide (PMAxx™), were compared using thermally inactivated norovirus GI and GII suspensions. The results showed better performance of PMAxx™ pretreatment in discriminating native and inactivated viruses. Thus, the pretreatment was optimize…

β1D Integrin Inhibits Cell Cycle Progression in Normal Myoblasts and Fibroblasts

1998

Integrins are alphabeta heterodimeric transmembrane receptors involved in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. The beta1 integrin subunit is widely expressed in vivo and is represented by four alternatively spliced cytoplasmic domain isoforms. beta1D is a muscle-specific variant of beta1 integrin and a predominant beta1 isoform in striated muscles. In the present study we showed that expression of the exogenous beta1D integrin in C2C12 myoblasts and NIH 3T3 or REF 52 fibroblasts inhibited cell proliferation. Unlike the case of the common beta1A isoform, adhesion of beta1D-transfected C2C12 myoblasts specifically via the expressed integrin did not activate mitogen-activated pro…

The remote and exclusive taste of border port cities

2020

Physical fitness, hormonal, and immunological responses during prolonged military field training

2018

Physical fitness is crucial to warfighters’ performance in the battlefield. Previous studies have shown negative changes in their hormonal and neuromuscular responses induced by military field training (MFT). The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in hormonal and immunological values and body composition during a prolonged MFT and to find out how warfighters’ physical condition influences these changes. Conscripts (n = 49, age 20 1 years, height 179 9 cm, body mass 73.8 7.8 kg, fat 12.6 3.7% and BMI 23 kg/m²) were measured before, during, after MFT, and after a 4-day recovery period. Serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a), interleuk…

Tempi del racconto e racconto del tempo in Piove all’insù

2022

Times of narration and narration of the time in Piove all’insù · The article hosts an analysis of the time categories in Luca Rastello’s novel Piove all’insù (2006). In the first section there is a survey of the verb tenses used in the narration of the past by the main character (who is also the narrator). These tenses contribute to make the two periods of time (the 1970s and the 2000s) constantly overlap each other. A second section is dedicated to the influence of the peculiar timeframes on the anti-utopian and pseudo-science-fictional gradient of the novel. A third section faces the issue of the father/son confrontation in Piove all’insù. All these elements help to define a notion of lit…
