First online operation of TRIGA-TRAP

Abstract We report on the successful coupling of the Penning-trap mass spectrometry setup TRIGA-TRAP to the research reactor TRIGA Mainz. This offers the possibility to perform direct high-precision mass measurements of short-lived nuclei produced in neutron-induced fission of a 235 U target located near the reactor core. An aerosol-based gas-jet system is used for efficient transport of short-lived neutron-rich nuclei from the target chamber to a surface ion source. In conjunction with new ion optics and extended beam monitoring capabilities, the experimental setup has been fully commissioned. The design of the surface ion source, efficiency studies and first results are presented.

Abstract The Tokamak Cooling Water System of nuclear facility has the function to remove heat from plasma facing components maintaining coolant temperatures, pressures and flow rates as required and, depending on thermal-hydraulic requirements, its systems are defined as High Energy Piping (HEP) because they contain fluids, such as water or steam, at a pressure greater than or equal to 2.0 MPa and/or at a temperature greater than or equal to 100 °C, or even gas at pressure above the atmospheric one. The influence of the addition of granular activated carbon (GAC) on the anaerobic treatment of wastewater with a mixture of ethanol and 1-ethoxy-2-propanol (E2P), which are typical pollutants from the flexographic/printing industry, was evaluated. For this purpose, the reactor performance and microbial community in two continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs), i.e. control and GAC supplemented, were assessed. Electrochemical Abatement of Organic Pollutants in Continuous-Reaction Systems through the Assembly of Microfluidic Cells in Series

The electrochemical treatment of wastewater contaminated by organic pollutants was performed under a continuous mode by using, for the first time, various micro-electrochemical cells in series. A synthetic solution of acid orange 7 (AO7), a largely used azoic dye, was chosen as model wastewater. Both the electro-Fenton (EF) method with a cheap compact graphite cathode and electrochemical oxidation (EO) at a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode were used. EO gave higher abatement of total organic carbon (TOC), but drastically higher energetic consumptions than EF. Electro-generation of H2O2 and abatement of organic pollutant in water by an electro-Fenton process in a microfluidic reactor

The electro-generation of H2O2 and the abatement of the model organic pollutant Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in water by an electro-Fenton process were performed both in a conventional undivided macro cell and, for the first time, in a microfluidic reactor. Under optimized operative conditions, the reduction of oxygen in the microdevice gave rise, using graphite cathode, to a concentration of H2O2 of about 6 mM, one order of magnitude higher than that achieved in conventional cells. Similarly, when electro-Fenton was performed in the microfluidic reactor a dramatic increase of the abatement of COD was achieved with respect to that obtained in a conventional cell. Modelling biological and chemically induced precipitation of calcium phosphate in enhanced biological phosphorus removal systems

The biologically induced precipitation processes can be important in wastewater treatment, in particular treating raw wastewater with high calcium concentration combined with Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal. Currently, there is little information and experience in modelling jointly biological and chemical processes. This paper presents a calcium phosphate precipitation model and its inclusion in the Activated Sludge Model No 2d (ASM2d). The proposed precipitation model considers that aqueous phase reactions quickly achieve the chemical equilibrium and that aqueous-solid change is kinetically governed. Abstract The Eulerian multiphase code has been applied for the comparative simulation of the experimental results obtained for varying flow rates of both fluid phases and for systems of various physicochemical properties used in the laboratory trickle-bed reactor (TBR). A Novel Lab‐Scale Fixed‐Bed Pyrolysis Reactor for Biofuel Production from Agro‐Waste: Experimental Set‐up and Preliminary Life Cycle Assessment Study

The present study reports the features and set-up of a novel lab-scale fixed bed pyrolysis reactor for the production of solid and liquid bio-fuels from waste biomass. The fixed bed reactor is tested by carrying out pyrolysis experiments using two different waste biomasses. Olive tree trimmings (OT) and olive pulp (OP), olive cultivation and olive mill industries residues respectively, are pyrolyzed, under nitrogen atmosphere, between 200 and 650 °C for a residence time of 0.5 h. The OT and OP pyrolysis chars were characterized in terms of mass yields, high calorific values (HHVs), proximate and elemental analysis. Determination of gold in two Egyptian gold ores using instrumental neutron activation analysis

Abstract The applicability of thermal neutron activation analysis for the determination of gold and other elements in two Egyptian gold ores has been studied. Ten samples collected from El Sukari and Atud in the Eastern Desert-Egypt have been analyzed. The samples were properly prepared together with their standards and simultaneously irradiated in a neutron flux of the order 7×10 11  n/cm 2  s using the TRIGA research reactor at Mainz.
