Conversion of furfural to 2-methylfuran over CuNi catalysts supported on biobased carbon foams

2021

In this study, carbon foams prepared from the by-products of the Finnish forest industry, such as tannic acid and pine bark extracts, were examined as supports for 5/5% Cu/Ni catalysts in the hydrotreatment of furfural to 2-methylfuran (MF). Experiments were conducted in a batch reactor at 503 K and 40 bar H2. Prior to metal impregnation, the carbon foam from tannic acid was activated with steam (S1), and the carbon foam from pine bark extracts was activated with ZnCl2 (S2) and washed with acids (HNO3 or H2SO4). For comparison, a spruce-based activated carbon (AC) catalyst and two commercial AC catalysts as references were investigated. Compressive strength of the foam S2 was 30 times great…

Pervaporation membrane reactors

2013

Pervaporation is a peculiar membrane separation process which is now considered for the integration with some types of reactions in new promising and interesting applications. Indeed, pervaporation membrane reactors are suitable to some specific utilizations also in sustainable chemistry, which is an area currently characterized by a growing interest. The fundamentals of this type of membrane reactors are presented and the advantages and the difficulties in many applications are discussed and reviewed with particular attention to the opportunities for future developments.

Optimization of Radioactive Waste Cementation for Decommissioning of Salaspils Research Reactor

2011

This paper deals with information on the radioactive waste cementation technology for decommissioning of Salaspils Research Reactor (SRR). Dismantled and segmented radioactive materials were cemented in concrete containers using tritiated water-cement mixture. The viscosity of water-cement mortar, mechanical tests of solidified mortar’s samples, change of temperature of the samples during solidification time and long time leakage of 137Cs, 14C, 60Co and 3T radionuclides was studied for different water-cement compositions with additives. The pH and electro conductivity of the solutions during leakage tests were controlled. It was shown, that water/cement ratio significantly influences on wat…

Hydrodynamics of a co-current three-phase solid-bed reactor for foaming systems

2001

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the parameters, which characterize the pulsing flow of the gas and liquid through a bed, namely the frequency of pulsation, the velocity of the pulses and the pulse structure, for foaming systems. The paper presents the results of experiments aimed at determining the effect of the foaming power and the surface tension of liquid phase on the values of the measured parameters.

Electrocarboxylation of benzyl chlorides at silver cathode at the preparative scale level

2008

Abstract The electrocarboxylation of benzyl chlorides to the corresponding carboxylic acids performed at silver cathodes was investigated both theoretically and experimentally in order to find the influence of the operative parameters on the selectivity and on the Faradic efficiency of the process. Theoretical considerations were confirmed by the electrocarboxylation of 1-phenyl-1-chloroethane performed in undivided cells equipped with sacrificial anodes both in a bench-scale electrochemical batch reactor and in a continuous batch recirculation reaction system equipped with a parallel plate electrochemical cell. Selectivity and Faradic yields higher than 80% and 70%, respectively, were obta…

Determination of gunshot residues by neutron activation analysis

1973

Systematic investigations of gunshot residues, deposited around the bullet hole, have been carried out. The traces were produced by firing on filter papers from distances of 5 to 200 cm using one rifle and three pistols as arms. Antimony, lead and barium were quantitatively determined after irradiating the samples in the nuclear reactor TRIGA Mainz by measurement of gamma-lines of122mSb,122Sb,207mPo and139Ba. The determinations were made purely instrumentally and-where the half lives were long enough-also after chemical separation of the nuclides. The amount of the elements were determined in dependence of the firing distance and of the area around the bullet hole.

ELECTROCHEMICAL CONVERSION OF DICHLOROACETIC ACID TO CHLOROACETIC ACID IN A MICROFLUIDIC STACK AND IN A SERIES OF MICROFLUIDIC REACTORS

2015

The electrochemical conversion of dichloroacetic acid to chloracetic acid was performed in three different micro devices: a simple micro fluidic cell; a microfluidic stack equipped with various electrode chambers in series and three micro fluidic cells in series. The electrochemical synthesis of chloracetic acid was performed successfully with high yields and selectivity under a single-pass mode without supporting electrolyte at low cell voltages. An increase of the productivity and of the final concentration of the target product was achieved by using a stack with two or three electrode chambers in series. The utilization of three micro reactors in series open interesting new perspectives,…

Abatement of Acid Orange 7 in macro and micro reactors. Effect of the electrocatalytic route

2014

Abstract The electrochemical treatment of aqueous solutions contaminated by Acid Orange 7 (AO7) was widely studied with the main objective to evaluate as the electrocatalytic route affects the performances of the degradation process in macro and microfluidic cells. Direct anodic oxidation (EO), electro-Fenton (EF), electro-generation of active chlorine (IOAC) and coupled processes were investigated in macro and microfluidic reactors in order to select more effective conditions for the treatment of such compound. The effect of numerous operative parameters (such as nature of the electrode materials, coupling of processes, flow rate, current density and inter-electrode distance) on the perfor…

Modeling of continuous Ph-stat stirred tank reactor withLactococcus lactisssp.lactisbv.diacetylactisimmobilized in calcium alginate gel beads

1995

A dynamic diffusion-reaction-growth model is proposed for the study of lactic fermentation, the bioconversion of citric acid, and cell release in an immobilized cell reactor [pH-stat continuous stirred tank-reactor (CSTR)]. The model correctly simulates the onset of fermentation and colonization of the gel, followed by the steady state. External diffusion is nonlimiting and internal diffusion is limited by high cell densities at the periphery of the gel beads. Lactose-citrate cometabolism in the gel is related to the distribution of active included biomass within the gel and to gradients of substrates (lactose, citrate) and products (lactate, pH) in the beads. The utilization of lactose is …

Isovaleraldehyde degradation using UV photocatalytic and dielectric barrier discharge reactors, and their combinations

2015

International audience; The abatement of isovaleraldehyde present in air was carried out in UV photocatalytic and dielectric barrier discharge reactors (and their combinations) for concentrations up to 150 mg C m−3 and air flow rates ranging from 4 to 10 m3 h−1. A kinetic study was performed following a Langmuir–Hinshelwood model. Photocatalytic treatment of an isovaleraldehyde and isovaleric acid mixture showed a clear inhibition of isovaleric acid abatement in presence of isovaleraldehyde. Dielectric barrier discharge treatment of isovaleraldehyde showed an increase of removal efficiency with applied voltage and a decrease with air flow rate and inlet concentration. Moreover, introduction…
