Simple Fingerprint Minutiae Extraction Algorithm Using Crossing Number On Valley Structure

2007

Most of the existing fingerprint extraction techniques currently available are based on ridge structure. The ridge usually has thicker structure than the valley, so that more processing time is needed to extract the ridge than extracting the valley. Taking the advantage of the thin structure of the valley, we proposed an algorithm that reduces the time needed for minutiae extraction. The algorithm was developed in Matlab environment using fingerprint images from FVC2004. In order to show the performance of the algorithm, numerical results are presented.

Background The development of face and object processing has attracted much attention; however, studies that directly compare processing of both visual categories across age are rare. In the present study, we compared the developmental trajectories of face and object processing in younger children (8–10 years), older children (11–13 years), adolescents (14–16 years), and adults (20–37). Methodology/Principal Findings We used a congruency paradigm in which subjects compared the internal features of two stimuli, while the (unattended) external features either agreed or disagreed independent of the identity of the internal features. We found a continuous increase in matching accuracy for faces…

Extraction and fusion of spectral parameters for face recognition

2011

This is the copy of journal's version originally published in Proc. SPIE 7877: http://spie.org/x10.xml?WT.svl=tn7. Reprinted with permission of SPIE. Many methods have been developed in image processing for face recognition, especially in recent years with the increase of biometric technologies. However, most of these techniques are used on grayscale images acquired in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The aims of our study are to improve existing tools and to develop new methods for face recognition. The techniques used take advantage of the different spectral ranges, the visible, optical infrared and thermal infrared, by either combining them or analyzing them separately …

A pre-processing technique based on the wavelet transform for linear autoassociators with applications to face recognition

1997

In order to improve the performance of a linear autoassociator (which is a neural network model), we explore the use of several preprocessing techniques. The gist of our approach is to store, in addition to the original pattern, one or several pre-processed (i.e. filtered) versions of the patterns to be stored in a neural network. First, we compare the performance of several pre-processing techniques (a plain vanilla version of the autoassociator as a control, a Sobel operator, a Canny-Deriche operator, and a multiscale Canny-Deriche operator) on an example of a pattern completion task using a noise degraded version of a face stored in an autoassociator. We found that the multiscale Canny-D…

Comparative Study of Face and Person Detection algorithms: Case Study of tramway in Lyon

2019

Moving object detection is one of the most important and challenging task in video surveillance and computer vision applications. Applying it in an industrial context requires taking into account parameters that are not necessarily considered in a theoretical context. We present here a brief review of numerous face and object detection algorithms and techniques that could be applied in our crowded application context. The chosen solution was embedded into the tramway.

Operation and first results of the NEXT-DEMO prototype using a silicon photomultiplier tracking array

2013

NEXT-DEMO is a high-pressure xenon gas TPC which acts as a technological test-bed and demonstrator for the NEXT-100 neutrinoless double beta decay experiment. In its current configuration the apparatus fully implements the NEXT-100 design concept. This is an asymmetric TPC, with an energy plane made of photomultipliers and a tracking plane made of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) coated with TPB. The detector in this new configuration has been used to reconstruct the characteristic signature of electrons in dense gas, demonstrating the ability to identify the MIP and "blob" regions. Moreover, the SiPM tracking plane allows for the definition of a large fiducial region in which an excellent e…

Honeybee (Apis mellifera) vision can discriminate between and recognise images of human faces.

2005

SUMMARY Recognising individuals using facial cues is an important ability. There is evidence that the mammalian brain may have specialised neural circuitry for face recognition tasks, although some recent work questions these findings. Thus, to understand if recognising human faces does require species-specific neural processing, it is important to know if non-human animals might be able to solve this difficult spatial task. Honeybees (Apis mellifera) were tested to evaluate whether an animal with no evolutionary history for discriminating between humanoid faces may be able to learn this task. Using differential conditioning, individual bees were trained to visit target face stimuli and to …

Spherical nonlinear correlations for global invariant three-dimensional object recognition

2007

We define a nonlinear filtering based on correlations on unit spheres to obtain both rotation- and scale-invariant three-dimensional (3D) object detection. Tridimensionality is expressed in terms of range images. The phase Fourier transform (PhFT) of a range image provides information about the orientations of the 3D object surfaces. When the object is sequentially rotated, the amplitudes of the different PhFTs form a unit radius sphere. On the other hand, a scale change is equivalent to a multiplication of the amplitude of the PhFT by a constant factor. The effect of both rotation and scale changes for 3D objects means a change in the intensity of the unit radius sphere. We define a 3D fil…

Face Expression Recognition through Broken Symmetries

2008

Security systems, criminology, physical access control and man-machine interactions are examples of applications where recognition of human faces may be crucial. In the present paper a new signature, based on a measure of axial symmetry called DST, is proposed as a significant feature to analyze facial expressions. The measure of symmetry is an elaborate difference between the internal and external symmetry kernels of an object. The idea here is to use the evolution of the symmetry measure of a face over an ordered set of its sub-images. We claim that different evolutionary trends will represent different face expressions. The proposed signature has been tested on several face databases (ps…

A Data Association Algorithm for People Re-Identification in Photo Sequences

2010

In this paper, a new system is presented to support the user in the face annotation task. Every time a photo sequence becomes available, the system analyses it to detect and cluster faces in set corresponding to the same person. We propose to model the problem of people re-identification in photos as a data association problem. In this way, the system takes advantage from the assumption that each person can appear at most once in each photo. We propose a fully automated method for grouping facial images, the method does not require any initialization neither a priori knowledge of the number of persons that are in the photo sequence. We compare the results obtained with our method and with s…
