Introducing Pseudo-Singularity Points for Efficient Fingerprints Classification and Recognition

2010

Fingerprint classification and matching are two key issues in automatic fingerprint recognition. Generally, fingerprint recognition is based on a set of relevant local characteristics, such as ridge ending and bifurcation (minutiae). Fingerprint classification is based on fingerprint global features, such as core and delta singularity points. Unfortunately, singularity points are not always present in a fingerprint image: the acquisition process is not ideal, so that the fingerprint is broken, or the fingerprint belongs to the arch class. In the above cases, pseudo-singularity-points will be detected and extracted to make possible fingerprint classification and matching. As result, fingerpr…

A Multimodal People Recognition System for an Intelligent Environment

2011

In this paper, a multimodal system for recognizing people in intelligent environments is presented. Users are identified and tracked by detecting and recognizing voices and faces through cameras and microphones spread around the environment. This multimodal approach has been chosen to develop a flexible and cheap though reliable system, implemented through consumer electronics. Voice features are extracted through a short time spectrum analysis, while face features are extracted using the eigenfaces technique. The recognition task is achieved through the use of some Support Vector Machines, one per modality, that learn and classify the features of each person, while bindings between modalit…

A Topic Recognition System for Real World Human-Robot Conversations

2013

One of the main features of social robots is the ability to communicate and interact with people as partners in a natural way. However, achieving a good verbal interaction is a hard task due to the errors on speech recognition systems, and due to the understanting the natural language itself. This paper tries to overcome such kind of problems by presenting a system that enables social robots to get involved in conversation by recognizing its topic. Through the use of classical text mining approach, the presented system allows social robots to understand topics of conversation between human partners, enabling the customization of behaviours in their accordance. The system has been evaluated …

Mean shift clustering for personal photo album organization

2008

In this paper we propose a probabilistic approach for the automatic organization of pictures in personal photo album. Images are analyzed in term of faces and low-level visual features of the background. The description of the background is based on RGB color histogram and on Gabor filter energy accounting for texture information. The face descriptor is obtained by projection of detected and rectified faces on a common low dimensional eigenspace. Vectors representing faces and background are clustered in an unsupervised fashion exploiting a mean shift clustering technique. We observed that, given the peculiarity of the domain of personal photo libraries where most of the pictures contain fa…

<title>Face modeling: a real-time embedded implementation of a stereovision algorithm</title>

2001

The problem to acquire 3D data of human face can be applied in face recognition, virtual reality, and many other applications. It can be solved using stereovision. This technique consistes in acquiring data in three dimensions from two cameras. The aim is to implement an algorithmic chain which makes it possible to obtain a three-dimensional space from two two-dimensional spaces: two images coming from the two cameras. Several implementations have already been considered. We propose a new simple realtime implementation, based on a multiprocessor approach (FPGA-DSP) allowing to consider an embedded processing. Then we show our method which provides depth map of face, dense and reliable, and …

When the smile is a cue to familiarity

2000

International audience; The question discussed in the two following experiments concerns the effect of facial expressions on face recognition. Famous and unknown faces with neutral or smiling expression were presented for different inspection durations (15 ms vs 1000 ms). Subjects had to categorize these faces as famous or unknown (Experiment 1), or estimate their degree of familiarity on a rating scale (Experiment 2). Results showed that the smile increased ratings of familiarity for unfamiliar faces (Experiments 1 and 2) and for famous faces (Experiment 2). These data are discussed in the framework of current face-recognition models and are interpreted in terms of social value of the smil…

The coupling between face and emotion recognition from early adolescence to young adulthood

2020

Abstract In the present study, we investigated whether differentiation occurs between identity and emotion processing as development in both domains proceeds across adolescence and during the transition into young adulthood. A sample of 343 participants between 11 and 24 years performed the Glasgow Face Matching Task ( Burton, White, & McNeill, 2010 ) for identity-based face recognition and the Cambridge Face-Battery ( Golan, Baron-Cohen, & Hill, 2006 ) for complex emotion recognition. Our results show adult levels of face recognition by the end of early adolescence, while complex emotion recognition continues to develop into young adulthood. Although each ability matures at different rate,…

A Parallel Face Detection System Implemented on FPGA

2007

In this paper, we introduce a methodology for designing a system for face detection and its implementation on FPGA. The chosen face detection method is the well-known convolutional face finder (CFF) algorithm, which consists in a pipeline of convolutions and subsampling operations. Our goal is to define a parallel architecture able to process efficiently this algorithm. We present a dataflow based architecture algorithm adequation (AAA) methodology implemented using the SynDEx software, in order to find the best compromise between the processing power and functionality requirement of each processor element (PE), and the efficiency of algorithm parallelization. We describe a first implementa…

Palmprint and face score level fusion: hardware implementation of a contactless small sample biometric system

2011

Including multiple sources of information in personal identity recognition and verification gives the opportunity to greatly improve performance. We propose a contactless biometric system that combines two modalities: palmprint and face. Hardware implementations are proposed on the Texas Instrument Digital Signal Processor and Xilinx Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platforms. The algorithmic chain consists of a preprocessing (which includes palm extraction from hand images), Gabor feature extraction, comparison by Hamming distance, and score fusion. Fusion possibilities are discussed and tested first using a bimodal database of 130 subjects that we designed (uB database), and then two …

Fast and Robust Face Detection on a Parallel Optimized Architecture implemented on FPGA

2009

In this paper, we present a parallel architecture for fast and robust face detection implemented on FPGA hardware. We propose the first implementation that meets both real-time requirements in an embedded context and face detection robustness within complex backgrounds. The chosen face detection method is the Convolutional Face Finder (CFF) algorithm, which consists of a pipeline of convolution and subsampling operations, followed by a multilayer perceptron. We present the design methodology of our face detection processor element (PE). This methodology was followed in order to optimize our implementation in terms of memory usage and parallelization efficiency. We then built a parallel arch…
