Azodyed gelatin films for holographic recording

Abstract In this work we present a preparation method of azo-dyed gelatin thin films for holographic recording and their photoinduced changes of optical properties. The non-toxic, commercially available and cheap ingredients were used for film preparation. The films were prepared by mixing azo-dyes with gelatin solution. The photoinduced properties of prepared films were investigated. The photoinduced dichroism and birefringence at 532 nm laser radiation were observed. The holographic recording of surface and volume gratings by 532 nm wavelength laser radiation were performed and surface relief gratings were studied with AFM. The mass transport direction in azodyed gelatin was studied.

Using repeated ingestion to determine the effect of sweetness, viscosity and oiliness on temporal perception of soymilk astringency

Abstract Astringency is a persistent sensation which increases upon repeated ingestion. To evaluate the effect of viscosity, sucrose and oil on perception of astringency during consumption of soymilk, a sequential sipping time–intensity (TI) procedure was utilized. For each soymilk, judges sipped the first of four ingestions and initiated the continuous recording of astringency intensity. Each sip was expectorated at 10 s after ingestion, and sipped 10 s after expectoration of the previous stimulus. After the fourth sample, judges rated astringency for 30 s. The interaction between serotonin (5-HT) and dopamine (DA)-containing neurons in the brain is a research topic that has raised the interest of many scientists working in the field of neuroscience since the first demonstration of the presence of monoamine-containing neurons in the mid 1960. The bulk of neuroanatomical data available clearly indicate that DA-containing neurons in the brain receive a prominent innervation from serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) originating in the raphe nuclei of the brainstem. Effects of different simplified milk recording methods on genetic evaluation with Test-Day animal model

The aims of the present study were to compare estimated breeding values (EBV) for milk yield using different testing schemes with a test-day animal model and to evaluate the effect of different testing schemes on the ranking of top sheep. Alternative recording schemes that use less information than that currently obtained with a monthly test-day schedule were employed to estimate breeding values. A random regression animal mixed model that used a spline function of days in milk was fitted. Gluing the ‘unwettable’: soil-dwelling harvestmen use viscoelastic fluids for capturing springtails

Gluing can be a highly efficient mechanism of prey capture, as it should require less complex sensory–muscular feedback. Whereas it is well known in insects, this mechanism is much less studied in arachnids, except spiders. Soil-dwelling harvestmen (Opiliones, Nemastomatidae) bear drumstick-like glandular hairs (clavate setae) at their pedipalps, which were previously hypothesized to be sticky and used in prey capture. However, clear evidence for this was lacking to date. Ductal infiltrating carcinoma (d.i.c.) of human breast is a highly invasive neoplasm characterized by enhanced deposition of collagen. Paradoxically, enhanced collagen deposition is not correlated with inhibition of the migration of tumour cells into the host tissue. d.i.c. is characterized by the reappearance of ‘embryonic’ type I-trimer collagen and an increase in type V collagen content in the matrix. Underground cosmic-ray experiment EMMA

EMMA (Experiment with MultiMuon Array) is a new approach to study the composition of cosmic rays at the knee region (1 − 10 PeV). The array will measure the multiplicity and lateral distribution of the high-energy muon component of an air shower and its arrival direction on an event-by-event basis. The array operates in the Pyh¨asalmi Mine, Finland, at a depth of 75 metres (or 210 m.w.e) corresponding to the cut-off energy of approximately 50 GeV for vertical muons.
