Non-invasive acoustic airway monitoring was evaluated in an experimental study. Recording amplitude and travel time of acoustic pulse response, an area-distance function of the cross sectional dimensions of the endotracheal tube and the adjacent airway was calculated to obtain an acoustic pattern of the airway. Measurements on models and excised human cadaver lungs were performed to discover whether displacement or obstruction of the artificial airway can be detected in the acoustic equivalent. ABSTRACT Daily high spatial resolution assessment of actual evapotranspiration is essential for water management and crop water requirement estimation under stress conditions. The application of energy balance models usually requires satellite observations of radiometric surface temperat ure with high geometrical and temporal resolutions. Testing the egocentric mirror-rotation hypothesis.

AbstractAlthough observers know about the law of reflection, their intuitive understanding of spatial locations in mirrors is often erroneous. Hecht et al. (2005) proposed a two-stage mirror-rotation hypothesis to explain these misconceptions. The hypothesis involves an egocentric bias to the effect that observers behave as if the mirror surface were rotated by about 2° to be more orthogonal than is the case. We test four variants of the hypothesis, which differ depending on whether the virtual world, the mirror, or both are taken to be rotated. Location of Gliomas in Relation to Mobile Telephone Use: A Case-Case and Case-Specular Analysis

The energy absorbed from the radio-frequency fields of mobile telephones depends strongly on distance from the source. The authors' objective in this study was to evaluate whether gliomas occur preferentially in the areas of the brain having the highest radio-frequency exposure. The authors used 2 approaches: In a case-case analysis, tumor locations were compared with varying exposure levels; in a case-specular analysis, a hypothetical reference location was assigned for each glioma, and the distances from the actual and specular locations to the handset were compared. Abstract Land surface emissivity retrieval over agricultural regions is important for energy balance estimations, land cover assessment and other related environmental studies. Plasmonic modes in molybdenum ultra-thin films suitable for hydrogenated amorphous silicon thin film solar cells

We have recently demonstrated that molybdenum ultra-thin films interposed between hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and SnO2:F transparent conductive oxide (TCO) in thin film solar cells show light trapping effects which enhance the solar cells performances. The effect of this improvement may be attributed to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes excited at the molybdenum interface by the solar radiation. In this paper we show direct evidence of such SPP modes in the case of the molybdenum/air interface by using the attenuated total reflection (ATR) technique, pioneered by Kretschmann, and we evaluate the dielectric constant of molybdenum at 660 nm. Quantification of minerals from ATR-FTIR spectra with spectral interferences using the MRC method.

A method for quantifying the individual components of mineral samples based on attenuated total reflectance - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) is described, extending the constant ratio (CR) method to analytes absorbing in a common range of wavenumbers. Absorbance values in the spectral region where the analytes absorb relative to the absorbance of an internal standard absorbing at a wavenumber where the analytes do not absorb, permits the quantification of N analytes using measurements at N fixed wavenumbers. The method was tested for mixtures of albite, orthoclase, kaolin and quartz.
