Sonographic biometry in obstructive uropathy of children: preoperative diagnosis and postoperative monitoring.

1985

Renal sonography was performed in 92 children with obstructive uropathy or vesicoureteral reflux preoperatively and at follow-up. Renal volume and the anteroposterior diameter of the renal pelvis proved to be the most reliable morphometric criteria for objective sonographic staging and follow-up of urinary tract obstruction. If transient obstruction occurred after uncomplicated antireflux ureterovesico-plasties (n = 41), it lasted at most 4 weeks. Kidneys with transient postoperative ureterovesical junction obstruction (n = 21) reverted to normal sonographic pattern within 4 weeks following ureteral reimplantation. In cases of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (n = 30), it took up to 6 mon…

Vesicoureteral reflux in young patients: Comparison of voiding color Doppler US with echo enhancement versus voiding cystourethrography for diagnosis…

2004

We assessed the accuracy of voiding color Doppler ultrasonography (US) with echo enhancement for diagnosis or exclusion of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) versus voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) and evaluated patient tolerance of the echo-enhancing agent. One hundred twenty-two patients (ages range, 1 month to 17 years) with 244 ureterorenal units underwent voiding color Doppler US with echo enhancement, which was followed by VCUG on the same day. After US of the urinary tract, the bladder was filled with saline solution via catheter. Then an echo-enhancing agent was instilled, and color Doppler US was performed. Reflux was diagnosed when microbubbles appeared in the ureter or the pelvicalicea…

The Lich-Gregoir antireflux plasty: experiences with 371 children.

1978

AbstractThe Lich-Gregoir antireflux procedure is a simple and safe method for the treatment of primary reflux of all grades if the ureter is not grossly dilated on the excretory urogram. Reflux was cured in 97.7 per cent of 429 ureters in 371 children. A stenosis of the terminal ureter requiring reimplantation occurred in 0.5 per cent. The over-all rate of reinterventions was 3.7 per cent. This low complication rate makes surgical correction of reflux advisable if urinary tract infection and primary reflux cannot be eradicated by continuous antimicrobial therapy within 6 months.

Gastroesophageal reflux and cow's milk allergy in infants: A prospective study

1996

Recent reports have suggested that gastroesophageal reflux in pediatric patients may be caused by food allergy. The aim of our study was to determine the frequency of the association of gastroesophageal reflux with cow's milk protein allergy in patients win the first year of life.We studied 204 consecutive patients (median age, 6.3 months) who had been diagnosed as having gastroesophageal reflux on the basis of 24-hour continuous pH monitoring and histologic examination of the esophageal mucosa.Clinical history suggested diagnosis of cow's milk allergy in 19 infants, and 93 others had positive test results (serum IgE anti-lactoglobulin, prick tests, circulating or fecal or nasal mucus eosino…

Evaluation of esophageal motility and reflux in children treated for esophageal atresia with the use of combined multichannel intraluminal impedance …

2011

Abstract Background Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and dysmotility are frequent in patients treated for esophageal atresia (EA). This aim of this study is to evaluate GER and dysmotility in young EA patients using pH–multichannel intraluminal impedance (pH-MII). Methods Fifteen patients with a mean age of 7.5 years (group 1) have been studied and compared with 15 children without congenital malformation, submitted to pH-MII for suspected GER (group 2). These latter patients serve as a control group of healthy subjects. The following impedance reflux and motility parameters have been studied on 10 standardized swallows: number of reflux episodes, mean acid clearing time, median bolus clearing…

Gastric Emptying in Infants with Gastroesophageal Reflux: Ultrasound Evaluation before and after Cisapride Administration

1992

The present study aimed to evaluate gastric emptying in children with gastroesophageal reflux (GER) by means of real-time ultrasonography, on the basis of measurements of the cross-sectional area of the gastric antrum. Twelve children with GER were studied (seven males, five females; age range, 3-13 months) and compared with 12 normal control children (six males, six females; age range, 3-13 months). The diagnosis of GER was confirmed by 24-h esophageal pH-monitoring. The GER patients had a significantly greater antral area than the controls at 90, 105, and 120 min after eating a standard meal (cow's milk formula, 300 ml/m2 body surface area); in addition, final gastric emptying time was si…

Domperidone plus Magnesium Hydroxide and Aluminum Hydroxide: A Valid Therapy in Children with Gastroesophageal Reflux: A Double-Blind Randomized Stud…

1994

To evaluate the efficacy of different drug combinations in treating severe gastroesophageal reflux (GER), we studied 80 children with GER. The patients were randomly divided into four groups: group A was treated with domperidone plus magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide, group B with domperidone plus alginate, group C with domperidone alone, and group D received placebo. At the time of diagnosis and 8 weeks after treatment the patients were clinically evaluated and underwent 24-h continuous esophageal pH monitoring. After treatment a complete regression of symptoms was observed in 16 of 20 patients in group A, in 8 of 20 in group B (A versus B, p < 0.018), in 9 of 20 in group C (A ver…

Fatores que influenciam a ocorrência de otite media entre crianças sicilianas com infecções de vias aéreas superiores

2016

ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Upper respiratory tract infection is a nonspecific term used to describe an acute infection involving the nose, paranasal sinuses, pharynx and larynx. Upper respiratory tract infections in children are often associated with Eustachian tube dysfunction and complicated by otitis media, an inflammatory process within the middle ear. Environmental, epidemiologic and familial risk factors for otitis media (such as sex, socioeconomic and educational factors, smoke exposure, allergy or duration of breastfeeding) have been previously reported, but actually no data about their diffusion among Sicilian children with upper respiratory tract infections are available. OBJECTIVE: T…

Discrepancy between power-Doppler voiding urosonography and voiding cystourethrography is not relevant for the management of primary vesicoureteric r…

2006

The aim of this study was to assess if discrepancy between power-Doppler voiding urosonography (PD-VUS) and voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) affects the management of patients with primary vesicoureteric reflux (VUR).Fifty-six children with suspected or known VUR were assessed both by PD-VUS and VCUG. Two independent observers, both pediatric surgeons, each aware of the results of only one imaging modality, advised children's management according to present care standards. Agreement between diagnostic findings at the two imaging modalities and between therapeutic advice of the two observers was evaluated using kappa statistics.PD-VUS diagnosed VUR in 3 patients and 6 ureteral units more th…
