The Civil Magistrates of Geneva and the Placement of Pastors in France on the Eve of the First War of Religion (1562)

2017

Abstract This article analyses excerpts from letters sent by French Reformed congregations and politically-engaged Calvinist laymen in 1562. In these dispatches, the churches, lay notables, and local magistrates of Montpellier, Grenoble, Gap, Nîmes, Issoire and Rouen requested pastors to Geneva or thanked the town’s authorities for ministers previously sent there. However, these six letters were not addressed to the Venerable Company of Pastors, but specifically to the syndics and Small Council of Geneva. While the role of the Company in the sending of Geneva-trained pastors to France on the eve of the Wars of Religion is known, the participation of the Republic of Geneva’s political author…

True V or not True V, That is the Question

2016

In this paper we intend to argue that: (1) the question `True V or not True V' is central to both the philosophical and mathematical investigations of the foundations of mathematics; (2) when posed within a framework in which set theory is seen as a science of objects, the question `True V or not True V' generates a dilemma each horn of which turns out to be unacceptable; (3) a plausible way out of the dilemma mentioned at (2) is provided by an approach to set theory according to which this is considered to be a science of structures.

Freud e Pfister: psicoanalisi e religione

2020

The uses of urban fortresses of Burgundy in the modern times

2011

Study the urban fortresses of Burgundy means interesting in the relationships between, on the one hand, these buildings and their occupants and, on the other hand, the society in which they are located. A city with a castle isn’t necessarily a castral town. The castle can generate, move or expand a city. Its representation also reflects its place in society. The genesis of the city often has consequences throughout the modern times on relationships between the castle and the city. In wartime, the castle can be the ruin or the salvation for the city. In peacetime, it’s most often a dead weight : it must be maintained, sometimes its garnison must be maintained too. But in the dialectic cities…

Religionssociologiske rids : forelæsninger og arbejdspapirer om religionssociologi fra 2005

2006

Agder University College in Norway has marked 'religion, ethics and society' as one of its top priority subjects. It was therefore decided to supplement its professor of sociology of religion, Pål Repstad, with another professorship in the subject. This led to awarding Ole Riis the new professorship in 2005. Ole Riis came from Denmark, where he taught sociology of religion for several years at the University of Aarhus, and where he later contributed to establishing a full sociology programme at University of Aalborg, with an emphasis on methodology. The present book contains expanded and corrected manuscripts for a series of lectures held by Ole Riis. First and foremost, there is the openin…

Agents of change: Women in top management and corporate environmental performance

2020

International audience; We analyze the influence of gender diversity in top management on the environmental performance of French firms. Consistent with gender socialization theory, which posits that women are raised from childhood to be more nurturing and compassionate for others, we find that firms with more women in top management exhibit higher environmental performance. This result extends those already reported in the literature regarding the effect of gender diversity at board level. We also show that women in top management are associated with several key indicators such as development of eco‐friendly products and commitment to resource reduction. Furthermore, we find that the influ…

Gender diversity and governance: Analysis of Italian listed companies

2020

In recent years, many countries have adopted different legislative and self-regulatory initiatives to be able to tackle the problem of the underrepresentation of women on boards. Also, Italy with Law No. 120/2011 introduced the gender issue adopting the normative that 1/3 of the elected members would be women. In this job, a primary aim was to study over the period 2016/2018 the impact of female presence on boards of 50 companies listed on the Italian Stock Exchange. In depth, our results confirm that Italian Law has produced significant effects on the composition of the corporate board. The result of our study shows that women positively influence corporate performance, this is perfectly i…

Social Geographical Patterns in Membership of the Established Church in Denmark

2019

The Church of Denmark was established in 1849 and is regarded as a pillar of traditional national identity. This status is being challenged by a steady decline in membership in recent decades. The Capital area is especially prone to low membership rates, and this regional pattern remains when the analysis controls for income and education. Furthermore, the local membership rate is also related to affiliation to the neighbourhood. Our detailed analysis is based on public register data on the individual level combined with geographical mapping information. Denmark is thereby divided into micro-aggregated areas in order to locate varying church membership rates. While some local variation can …
