Determination of projection geometry from quantitative assessment of the distortion of spherical references in single-view projection radiography
2004
A method is introduced, inferring the three-dimensional (3-D) location from the 2-D radiographic shadow of an opaque spherical reference body of known radius by considering its elliptical distortion, the 2-D shadow location and a known source-to-receptor distance. Three noncollinear spheres fixed to a rigid object constitute all possible degrees of freedom, i.e., the entire 3-D imaging geometry. The method may be used (a) to determine the 3-D imaging geometry from a single 2-D view and (b) to correct for foreshortening of object distances coplanar with the plane defined by the sphere triplet. Apart from the mathematical background the article describes a small feasibility experiment, perfor…
Novel view synthesis for projective texture mapping on real 3D objects
2006
Industrial reproduction, as stereography or lithography, have a lack in texture information, as they only deal with 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we provide a new technique to map texture on real 3D objects, by synthesizing a novel view from two camera images to a projector frame, considered as a camera acting in reverse. No prior information on the pose or the shape of the 3D object is necessary, however hard calibration of the complete system is needed.
LA STUFA DI GIUSEPPE DAMIANI ALMEYDA. DAI DISEGNI ORIGINARI ALLA RAPPRESENTAZIONE DIGITALE.
2014
The design of the stove goes back to 1859, when Damiani was only 25 years. The approach suffers from typological studies of Durand, and is clearly inspired by the contemporary buildings of iron and glass. In this project the classicism of the architectural order is combined with the modernity of the iron and glass roofing. The representation of the digital model is kind of realistic picture to see the project idea of Damiani Almeyda in order to simulate the view from outside the building, the view of the interior spaces and the insertion in a place that corresponds to the information obtainable from the original drawings.

VIRTUAL REALITY FOR URBAN PLANNING. THE PORT OF PALERMO: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
2020
Virtual reality is proving to be an interesting tool for the visualization of 3d models developed for urban planning. It allows not only interactive visualization, but also the possibility of inserting analogical and informative contents. The case study relates to the development of a 3D model viewable in virtual reality of the Port of Palermo area, of great urban, historical and logistical interest. The system allows the visualization of its current state, historical emergencies and future developments, as well as the comparison between existing services and those planned in the reconfiguration project.

Linearizing Auditory Distance Estimates by Means of Virtual Acoustics
2008
Auditory distance estimates are not linearly related to physical distances: people tend to overestimate close physical distances, and underestimate far distances [I]. We have modeled a virtual listening environment whose objective is to provide a linear relationship between perceived and physical distance. The simulated environment consists of a trapezoidal membrane with specific absorbing properties at the boundaries. A physics-based model simulates acoustic wave propagation in this virtual space and provides auditory distance cues, namely intensity and direct-to-reverberant energy ratio. Simulations predict the linearity of the psychophysical function relating physical distance to perceiv…
Cloud detection for CHRIS/Proba hyperspectral images
2005
Accurate and automatic detection of clouds in satellite scenes is a key issue for a wide range of remote sensing applications. With no accurate cloud masking, undetected clouds are one of the most significant source of error in both sea and land cover biophysical parameter retrieval. Sensors with spectral channels beyond 1 um have demonstrated good capabilities to perform cloud masking. This spectral range can not be exploited by recently developed hyperspectral sensors that work in the spectral range between 400- 1000 nm. However, one can take advantage of their high number of channels and spectral resolution to increase the cloud detection accuracy, and to describe properly the detected c…
A Novel Artificial Mosaic Generation Technique Driven by Local Gradient Analysis
2008
Art often provides valuable hints for technological innovations especially in the field of Image Processing and Computer Graphics. In this paper we present a novel method to generate an artificial mosaic starting from a raster input image. This approach, based on Gradient Vector Flow computation and some smart heuristics, permit us to follow the most important edges maintaining at the same time high frequency details. Several examples and comparisons with other recent mosaic generation approaches show the effectiveness of our technique.
