Clustering techniques for personal photo album management

2009

In this work we propose a novel approach for the automatic representation of pictures achieving at more effective organization of personal photo albums. Images are analyzed and described in multiple representation spaces, namely, faces, background and time of capture. Faces are automatically detected, rectified and represented projecting the face itself in a common low-dimensional eigenspace. Backgrounds are represented with low-level visual features based on RGB histogram and Gabor filter bank. Faces, time and background information of each image in the collection is automatically organized using a mean-shift clustering technique. Given the particular domain of personal photo libraries, wh…

Gitanas without a tambourine: Notes on the historical representation and personal self-representation of the Spanish Romani woman.

2020

The performative representation of the Spanish Roma woman reveals a historical journey that brings her closer to many symbolic elaborations of the feminine, giving her a special affinity with the imaginary concerning the colonized woman, particularly with the Orientalist vision. Developed initially by the travelling intellectuals in Spain who sought a fusion of the topics of sexualized exoticism, the myth was reworked by local artists and thinkers without undermining their power to silence and make invisible the reality of the most vulnerable and most represented members of the ethnic group, their women. Today, a growing awareness of the importance of collective action directs Roma women t…

Egle Renata Trincanato. Unbuilt

2016

In the spring of 1947, the ‘Venetian’ architect took part in the competition, organized by the Municipality of Venice, for a series of houses to be built in the north and south estuary of the Venetian lagoon, obtaining the first and second prize, both ex aequo, with projects for residences proposals in Burano and Pellestrina. In these two unbuilt works, we can trace some important methodological aspects about the approach to the project by the architect who will make Venice the city subject of her later studies.

Sguardi di genere nel Sud Africa post-apartheid. Zanele Muholi e le immagini del mancante

2017

In June 2013 Palermo held the National Gay Pride. The opening of the manifestation was the solo photographic exhibition of Zanele Muholi. 25 photos of Being (2007), 21 of Faces & Phases (2009) and Caitilin and I (2009) are the corpus that this article wants to examine inside the main event of Palermo’s Gay Pride. The paper presents how Muholi’s works overturn the act of seeing by representing the image of the missing: exhibits how the invisible lesbian body problematized the local and national South African space (and not only that); it shows how the spatial exclusion of the not-disciplined bodies make visible the divisions of the spatial and gendered relations. The long story of the wo…

Content-Based Approach in Exploring the Cognitive Structure of Values

2012

This article discusses the content-based approach in examination of values. In the content-based approach, human thinking in different contexts is set at the focal point, and attention is devoted to those cognitive processes through which mental representations are constructed. The information contents of mental representations play a decisive role in understanding human behavior. By applying content-based analysis to an examination of the conceptual contents of human values, it is possible to reach a deeper understanding of the cognitive structure which lies as the motivational foundation of actions. In this article, it is argued that different informational contents of values explain vari…

Accurate representation of the distributions of the 3D Poisson-Voronoi typical cell geometrical features

2019

Understanding the intricate and complex materials microstructure and how it is related to materials properties is an important problem in the Materials Science field. For a full comprehension of this relation, it is fundamental to be able to describe the main characteristics of the 3-dimensional microstructure. The most basic model used for approximating steel microstructure is the Poisson-Voronoi diagram. Poisson-Voronoi diagrams have interesting mathematical properties, and they are used as a good model for single-phase materials. In this paper we exploit the scaling property of the underlying Poisson process to derive the distribution of the main geometrical features of the grains for ev…

COMPLEX STRUCTURES ON INDECOMPOSABLE 6-DIMENSIONAL NILPOTENT REAL LIE ALGEBRAS

2007

We compute all complex structures on indecomposable 6-dimensional real Lie algebras and their equivalence classes. We also give for each of them a global holomorphic chart on the connected simply connected Lie group associated to the real Lie algebra and write down the multiplication in that chart.

On invariant measures of finite affine type tilings

2006

In this paper, we consider tilings of the hyperbolic 2-space, built with a finite number of polygonal tiles, up to affine transformation. To such a tiling T, we associate a space of tilings: the continuous hull Omega(T) on which the affine group acts. This space Omega(T) inherits a solenoid structure whose leaves correspond to the orbits of the affine group. First we prove the finite harmonic measures of this laminated space correspond to finite invariant measures for the affine group action. Then we give a complete combinatorial description of these finite invariant measures. Finally we give examples with an arbitrary number of ergodic invariant probability measures.

Poisson Geometry in Mathematics and Physics

2008

We realize quantized anti de Sitter space black holes, building Connes spectral triples, similar to those used for quantized spheres but based on Universal Deformation Quantization Formulas (UDF) obtained from an oscillatory integral kernel on an appropriate symplectic symmetric space. More precisely we first obtain a UDF for Lie subgroups acting on a symplectic symmetric space M in a locally simply transitive manner. Then, observing that a curvature contraction canonically relates anti de Sitter geometry to the geometry of symplectic symmetric spaces, we use that UDF to define what we call Dirac-isospectral noncommutative deformations of the spectral triples of locally anti de Sitter black…
