Improvement of motor performance by observational training in elderly people.
2010
Action observation influences action execution; this strong coupling is underlined by an overlap of cortical areas activated during observation and execution of action, and is dependent of specific motor experience. The goal of the present study was to verify if action observation can be used for rehabilitation of elderly people. We tested this question with a protocol of observational practice of 2 frequently used movements: walking and sit-to-stand/back-to-sit. Both tasks were performed at normal and maximal speed before and after training, by 8 elderly subjects. Observational practice led to an increase in walking velocity via an increase in step frequency, but without modification of st…
How Can We Identify the Best Implantation Site for an ECG Event Recorder?
2000
ZELLERHOFF, C., et al.: How Can We Identify the Best Implantation Site for an ECG Event Recorder? The aim of this study was to show how to find the preferable implantation site for an ECG event recorder (ECG-ER). We compared the quality of bipolar ECG recordings (4-cm electrode distance, vertical position) in 65 patients at the following sites: left and right subclavicular, left and right anterior axillary line (4th-5th interspace), left and right of the sternum (4th-5th interspace), heart apex, and subxyphoidal. The results were compared to the standard ECG lead II. In 30 patients, an additional comparison between vertical and horizontal ECG registrations was done using the same sites. ECG…
Action expertise reduces brain activity for audiovisual matching actions: An fMRI study with expert drummers
2011
When we observe someone perform a familiar action, we can usually predict what kind of sound that action will produce. Musical actions are over-experienced by musicians and not by non-musicians, and thus offer a unique way to examine how action expertise affects brain processes when the predictability of the produced sound is manipulated. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan 11 drummers and 11 age- and gender-matched novices who made judgments on point-light drumming movements presented with sound. In Experiment 1, sound was synchronized or desynchronized with drumming strikes, while in Experiment 2 sound was always synchronized, but the natural covariation between sound in…
Norman Graphics: A Multimedia Manifesto
2020
The apses of the Cathedral of Monreale (XII century) are characterised by extraordinarily rich decorations, to enhance the most sacred part of the sanctuary where the altar is located. The paper describes some circular inlays of the central apse of the Cathedral of Monreale through a geometric analysis communicated via a multimedia language. The geometric motifs can be arranged in a graphic composition according to an imaginative process that collects all the scientific analysis procedure described above such as a sort of Manifesto of the Norman architectural culture geometry in Sicily and in southern Italy. The Manifesto is an audio-visual product, consisting of vector drawings’ animations…
Au38Q MBTR-K3
2020
Purpose The purpose of Au38Q MBTR-K3 is to test the scalability of a machine learning regression model when the number of observations and the number of features change. Background The Au38Q MBTR-K3 was created from a trajectory file regarding the density functional theory simulation of Au38Q hybrid nanoparticle performed by Juarez-Mosqueda et al. in their paper Ab initio molecular dynamics studies of Au38(SR)24 isomers under heating using the MBTR descriptor by Himanen et al. as presented in paper DScribe: Library of descriptors for machine learning in materials science. The MBTR was used with the default parameters for K=3 (angles between atoms) presented at the website of Dscribe version…

Girls’ portrayals in fast fashion advertisements
2022
This study analyses the visual construction of girls and notionssurrounding young femininities articulated by 15 contemporaryadvertisements of Nordic fast fashion companies, available on theirpublic Facebook pages in Finland. A visual discourse analysis identifiessome blatantly stereotypical and a few complex visual constructions ofgirls as heterosexual, caring, innocent, sexy posers, active self-presentersand self-surveyors, carefree and environmental activists. Theimplications of our findings, particularly in shaping societal notionssurrounding girls, are discussed. The study contributes primarily to theresearch field of visual commercial representation of girls by unpackinghow their comp…
Social representations as a diagnostic tool for identifying cultural and other group differences
2005
The aim of this research is to develop a procedure for data collection within a social representations perspective that may be of use in diverse contexts in which investigators wish to understand and compare the norms and values associated with a particular social object in different social or cultural groups. The social representation of sport is studied in two culturally distinct countries, Morocco and France, with the use of an innovative procedure derived from the Model of Basic Cognitive Schemes (Rouquette, 1990, 1994b). The results reveal a difference in the appropriation of values related to sport in the two countries: the social representation of sport for the Moroccans is focused a…
Acoustic vibrations of anisotropic nanoparticles
2009
Acoustic vibrations of nanoparticles made of materials with anisotropic elasticity and nanoparticles with non-spherical shapes are theoretically investigated using a homogeneous continuum model. Cubic, hexagonal and tetragonal symmetries of the elasticity are discussed, as are spheroidal, cuboctahedral and truncated cuboctahedral shapes. Tools are described to classify the different vibrations and for example help identify the modes having a significant low-frequency Raman scattering cross-section. Continuous evolutions of the modes starting from those of an isotropic sphere coupled with the determination of the irreducible representation of the branches permit some qualitative statements t…
Developing Domain-Knowledge Evolutionary Algorithms for Network-on-Chip Application Mapping
2013
This paper addresses the Network-on-Chip (NoC) application mapping problem. This is an NP-hard problem that deals with the optimal topological placement of Intellectual Property cores onto the NoC tiles. Network-on-Chip application mapping Evolutionary Algorithms are developed, evaluated and optimized for minimizing the NoC communication energy. Two crossover and one mutation operators are proposed. It is analyzed how each optimization algorithm performs with every genetic operator, in terms of solution quality and convergence speed. Our proposed operators are compared with state-of-the-art genetic operators for permutation problems. Finally, the problem is approached in a multi-objective w…
