Lina Bo Bardi: Unbuilt in Sicily
2017
In August 1940 the magazine ‘Domus’, in a special issue dedicated to the “casa al mare”, publishes the project of the “Casa sul mare di Sicilia” by Lina Bo Bardi and Carlo Pagani. It is one of the first projects of Lina Bo, an utopian project whose representations indicate a way of proceedings that coagulates theory and imagination conceived as indissoluble relationship of “doing”. Add to the ‘unconventional’ drawings of the project, plans, perspectives and perspective section, indicating a very personal way in using of graphic language, we can find a synthesis’ drawing that underlines how the representation is intended both as an extension of the mind, and as order structure of a speech. I…
Separation of unitary representations of connected Lie groups by their moment sets
2005
AbstractWe show that every unitary representation π of a connected Lie group G is characterized up to quasi-equivalence by its complete moment set. Moreover, irreducible unitary representations π of G are characterized by their moment sets.
Non-periodic Discrete Splines
2015
Discrete Splines with different spans were introduced in Sect. 3.3.1. This chapter focuses on a special case of discrete splines whose spans are powers of 2. These splines are discussed in more detail. The Zak transform provides an integral representation of such splines. Discrete exponential splines are introduced. Generators of the discrete-spline spaces are described whose properties are similar to properties of polynomial-spline spaces generators. Interpolating discrete splines provide efficient tools for upsampling 1D and 2D signals. An algorithm for explicit computation of discrete splines is described.
Una lettura urbana su Balestrate. Realtà intermedia e nuove possibili centralità
2014
This work was developed at the “R-Lab” project, a workshop that was experimentally promoted by the University of Palermo (teachers, students and researchers) during the academic years 2010-11 and 2011-12. Workshop participants collected and elaborated analysis and proposals in an interdisciplinary and multi-level way (PhD, degree thesis, co-financed research) with lessons, seminars and applied research. Prof. F. Maggio coordinated the section that was titled “Analysis of the smaller towns in Sicily”, and we worked with him within an agreement that was signed with the local administration of Balestrate, a small coastal town in the northwestern Sicily. Our work focuses on some issues of the t…
2013
Author's version of an article in the journal: Historisk tidsskrift. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ht/2013/01/et_oppgjr_med_eneveldet_og_standssamfunnet_-_dannelsen_av_ Previous studies of political culture in Norway in the period 1814–1850 have mainly concentrated on events and movements surrounding the Storting and the bourgeoisie in large urban areas. Exceptions were formation of the peasants’ opposition in the Storting and of the radical lower class movement under the guidance of Marcus Thrane in 1848–1851. Little attention has been paid to the development of a popular rural public sphere and the early democratization of local communities in Norway in the per…

A symmetry adapted approach to the dynamic Jahn-Teller problem: Application to mixed-valence polyoxometalate clusters with keggin structure
2012
In this article, we present a symmetry-adapted approach aimed to the accurate solution of the dynamic vibronic problem in large scale Jahn-Teller (JT) systems. The algorithm for the solution of the eigen-problem takes full advantage of the point symmetry arguments. The system under consideration is supposed to consist of a set of electronic levels mixed by the active JT and pseudo JT vibrational modes. Applying the successive coupling of the bosonic creation operators, we introduce the irreducible tensors that are called multivibronic operators. Action of the irreducible multivibronic operators on the vacuum state creates the vibrational symmetry adapted basis that is subjected to the Gram-…
Architetture essenziali nella Valle dei Templi di Agrigento
2021
Small architectures can help to reinstate a daily use of the archaeological park, no longer considered as a specialised fence. The projects feed on iconographic memories that indicate where and how to look at. The comparison between the historical views and the current state shows some changes. Today the contemporary city surrounds the temples, arising among billboards, behind traffic lights. Unlike the postcards' logic where the ruins appear isolated, in the wake of a generic polemic against the recent transformations, the article aims to focus on a new aesthetic where contemporary architecture narrates a dialogue between different parts, offering new paths of approach to the ruins.
Knowledge Representation and Cognitive Skills in Problem Solving
2017
This paper offers a programmatic view on the study of cross-linguistic variation and its effects on human cognitive skills. Based on Linguistic Typology and its methodology to account for cross-linguistic differences (section 2), it will show how the presence or absence of certain grammatical categories enhances or inhibits specific skills in the domain of quantification (section 3). In its main part (section 4), it will show how to describe structural differences between the source and the target language in translation and how to find out if these differences affect the performance of students in knowledge assessment tests. For that purpose, it will compare the English and the Japanese ve…
