Per una ricostruzione del concetto di bioetica

2020

By means of a critical investigation of the concept of bioethics starting from Potter’s work, the present essay intends to highlight aporias and paradoxes in the dominant construction in the literature of the sector. The line of argumentation aims to point out that the current concept of bioethics is not able to meet the regulatory expectations that have arisen around it. In the pars construens of the essay I will try to trace the way for a reconstruction of the concept of bioethics, bringing it closer to the origins of Fritz Jahr’s speculation and to the traditional notion of ethics, intended as a reflective science rather than a pragmatic discipline.

The role of negative and positive forms of power in supporting CSR alignment and commitment between large firms and SMEs

2018

Do large firms exert power to shape the CSR behavior of their SME partners?” We answer this question by proposing a model built on the stakeholder theory and the shareholder theory, and go on to explain how this impact influences the commitment of the SME towards their large partner. The model highlights the central role that different forms of power exercised by the large firm play in the process. A survey of 291 SMEs confirms the key hypotheses, including the mediating role of reward power. The effects of coercive power are noteworthy and they illustrate the complex and competing forces at play in influencing CSR behavioral change in SMEs. The research makes a novel contribution to practi…

POEMS: A Case Study of an Italian Wine-Producing Firm

2006

Over the last decade, researchers paid much attention to concepts such as Design for Environment, Extended Producer Responsibility, Responsible Chain Management, and Eco-design. Many management tools and standards (such as EMAS, ISO 14001, LCA, EPD, Ecolabel) have been developed to support companies in the evaluation and management of their environmental performance and to pursue continual environmental improvement. The more recent development of the aforesaid fields looks at interorganizational environmental management. Such an approach can complement the more traditional intraorganizational corporate environmental management approaches and tools. A typical example of this new trend is the…

Literature, Simulation, and the Path Towards Deeper Learning

2019

This paper investigates the role of teaching literature for deeper learning. It draws on models of simulation, which have usually been more common in psychology, law, and political science. Teaching literature may be ideally suited for deeper learning since literary texts can be seen as experimental social action. Each text confronts its readers with ethical choices. This property of literature as a medium can in turn be transformed into new models for teaching literature. Ultimately, literary simulations can hence constitute a path towards civic education and social responsibility. Such approaches, in turn, may contribute not only to discussions of the “relevance” of the humanities as such…

The association between board gender diversity and financial reporting quality, corporate performance and corporate social responsibility disclosure …

2017

Purpose (mandatory) Companies, politicians, the mass media, legislators, scholars and society in general have shown a growing interest in how board gender diversity affects a firm’s decisions. This concept has been developed because some nations have introduced voluntary policies to regulate and increase the proportion of female directors on corporate boards. Thus, the aim of this study is to review previous research based on board gender diversity as a corporate governance mechanism and its effect on some firms’ business decisions: Financial reporting quality (FRQ), firm performance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting. Design/methodology/approach (mandatory) We focus on age…

Who is entitled for the recognition of public right in the urban domain? A perspective from the southern Italian context

2015

Who has the right of access to public space of the city and what are the limits to this access varies depending on the circumstances: the shift between the public and private sphere, the economic- institutional system, laws and planning tools. If many scholars focus on relational values of public/political spaces, the sphere of public facilities is a central issue. In Italy this issue is ruled by an ancient national law, aimed at ensuring minimum collective rights, the so-called urban standards as mandatory quantity of areas to locate within the municipal plans. Although many regions of Northern Italy have satisfied and raised this standard, the southern areas remain in a situation of sever…

Abstract The concept of social licence to operate (SLO) is an increasingly popular tool for companies to manage their relations with the local communities. SLO is very seldom used in the nuclear sector, which has nevertheless applied similar approaches, under notions such as partnership and participatory governance. This article explores the specific challenges that the application of SLO faces in the nuclear waste management (NWM) sector, by applying an often-used SLO framework of Boutilier and Thomson to illustrative case studies concerning nuclear waste repository projects in Finland, France and Sweden. Among the specificities of this sector, the article focuses on the central roles of t…

The theorical and historical evolution of firm Accounting: Premises for a generalist approach to Reporting

2019

With the transposition into national laws of Directive 2014/95/UE on disclosure of non- financial information by large companies, the social and environmental responsibility has taken on new significance in the recent accounting debate. This paper moves in particular from the develop- ments of that topic in Italian Ragioneria and in French Comptabilité coming to propose a generalist approach to the business reporting embracing both kinds of information, financial and not financial. From an historical point of view the theme of social and environmental responsibility has been pro- gressively developed in the twentieth century on Italian and French research getting more and more importance.
