The refurbishment of the building stock is a key strategy towards the achievement of the climate and energy goals of the European Union. This study aims at evaluating the energy and environmental impacts associated with retrofitting a residential apartment to improve its vertical envelope thermal insulation. Energy and environmental assessment of retrofit actions on a residential building

Energy and environmental performances of buildings strictly depend on many factors related to the choice of construction materials, technical equipment, installation and use. In the following chapter a set of retrofit actions to improve the thermal performance of an existing conventional building is presented. The energy and environmental assessment of these actions is carried out following a life cycle approach. Intermediate Isolation System for the seismic retrofit of existing masonry buildings

This paper deals with the potentials of Intermediate Isolation Systems (IIS) for retrofitting masonry buildings by means of a vertical extension, isolated at its base, and realized on the rooftop of the existing structure. By carefully defining the dynamic properties of the superstructure and isolation system, in previous papers the authors have demonstrated that this passive technique is able to reduce a priori the seismic demand on the existing building. EXPERIMENTAL SEISMIC ANALYSIS OF MONUMENTS FOR RISK MITIGATION

An experimental investigation, at the moment in progress, for the evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of a monumental structure and the effects of some reinforcement devices are presented. Referring to this monumental structure, that is a church, the authors obtained the dynamically identified analytical model and recognized that the drum-dome system was one of the macro-elements with highest risk. Increasing the flexural capacity of RC beams using steel angles and pre-tensioned stainless steel ribbons

This article presents an experimental programme on reinforced concrete beams retrofitted with steel angles and pre-stressed stainless steel ribbons to increase their flexural strength and ductility. Two different configurations of the steel ribbon were designed, and two companion specimens for each type considered were subjected to a four-point bending test to facilitate a direct comparison in the analysis of the effectiveness of the retrofitting technique.
