Natural food products are becoming increasingly popular worldwide due to their health and environmental benefits. However, these products' increasing anecdotal popularity has not translated into their widespread adoption; in fact, demand for natural food products remains confined to a relatively small segment of consumers. The Triassic is bounded by two of the most severe biotic crises, but nevertheless this time was, for bivalves, both a recovery and a diversification period, and a moment to fully exploit some of their evolutionary novelties. Just how and when this was achieved is analyzed in this paper, which covers Induan to Sinemurian bivalve diversity, based on a newly compiled database. Validated data and published studies indicate that four subspecies are present in continental Italy and its surrounding islands. Two of these subspecies (F. p. peregrinus and F. p. brookei) represent breeding populations, while the other two (F. p. calidus and F. p. pelegrinoides) winter and migrate in the country. Indeed, the European subspecies (F. p. peregrinus) has the most intriguing status, as it can both breed and winter.
