Saliva variations in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

2007

Abstract Objectives The protective role of saliva in the case of oesophageal exposition to gastric acid has long been studied but some contradictions still remain. The main end-point of this study was to evaluate if a qualitative and quantitative alteration in salivary secretion exists in patients affected by GERD. Methods One hundred and twenty patients (T group) with clinically and endoscopically diagnosed GERD, and 98 healthy subjects (C group) have been evaluated; salivary tests (i.e. basal flow rate, stimulated flow rate, pH, [Na + ] and [K + ]) were performed, socio-demographical variables and oral GERD-related symptoms were taken into account. SPSS 10.5 software was used for statisti…

Clinical presentation of patients with suspected obstructive sleep apnea and self-reported physician-diagnosed asthma in the ESADA cohort.

2018

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and asthma are often associated and several studies suggest a bidirectional relationship between asthma and OSA. This study analyzed the characteristics of patients with suspected OSA from the European Sleep Apnea Database according to presence/absence of physician-diagnosed asthma. Cross-sectional data in 16,236 patients (29.1% female) referred for suspected OSA were analyzed according to occurrence of physician-diagnosed asthma for anthropometrics, OSA severity and sleepiness. Sleep structure was assessed in patients studied by polysomnography (i.e. 48% of the sample). The prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma in the entire cohort was 4.8% (7.9% in women, …

Information resources used by patients with inflammatory bowel disease: Satisfaction, expectations and information gaps.

2015

Abstract Background and purpose Information received by IBD patients about their disease is of particular importance. The objective of the study was to determine the information resources these patients used, together with their perceived information gaps and expected preferences. Patients and methods A prospective, observational, cross-sectional study conducted on IBD patients attending 13 Spanish hospitals during 2008. Patients completed a semi-structured 52-question survey. Results Survey was adequately completed by 379 of 385 patients (98%), of whom 57% had Crohn's disease and 43% ulcerative colitis. Mean patient age was 37.9 years (range, 16–76 years). Gastroenterologists were the most…

Public health nurses' approaches to early childhood physical activity in Finland.

2009

This study was conducted using five focus groups with 24 public health nurses from regional child health clinics in order to explore health professionals' perceptions concerning physical activity. Participants were professionally experienced (mean 13.9 years), female (mean 46.2 years) nurses with some training in health-enhancing physical activity. Frame analysis of verbatim transcripts resulted in four frames: the environmental frame, the family frame, the natural frame and the wellbeing and health frame. The importance of physical and social environment, especially the role of parents, was highlighted as determinants of physical activity. Furthermore, the natural characteristics of physi…

Patterns of Experienced Aging with a Finnish Cohort

1993

A cohort study of eighty-year old residents in Jyväskylä (pop. 66,000), central Finland, was carried out in 1990 as part of the EVERGREEN-project. A total of 262 persons born in 1910 were interviewed in the cohort study. The survey data produced a fairly accurate picture of the respondents' objective situation. In order to shed further light on how the respondents felt about growing old, tape recorded narrative stories were collected from a subsample of twenty persons (10 women and 10 men). The stories revealed the subjective meanings and evaluations attached by the individuals concerned to their own aging. Being members of the same culture and the same age cohort, they also shared the sam…

Analisi comparativaSettore SECS-P/07 - Economia AziendaleAmministrazioni pubbliche territorialiCiclo di gestione della performanceThe literature has shown that the focus on performance management is shifting from collecting and reporting data to actually using them for decision making. The comparative case-study analysis presented in this article aims to identify the critical factors for adopting and implementing relevant performance management systems in regional governments. The evidence emerging from this casestudy analysis finds that certain variables are essential to advancing our progress in performance management including the role of legislation the need for leadership and the characteristics of performance indicators. The hope of this research is to encourage regional administrators to embrace leadership roles in interpreting and applying legal frameworks for realizing the benefits of performance management.

Contributo para o estudo psicométrico da versão portuguesa do Cuestionario de Satisfacción Laboral S20/23

2010

Job satisfaction is understood through its dual role on organization productivity and employees achievement (Smith, 1998). The use of instruments to measure it in Portugal, has been the subject of several studies, such as the adaptation of the Cuestionario de Satisfacción Laboral S20/23 (Meliá & Peiró, 1989) to Portuguese population carried out by Pocinho and García (2008). This study is a further contribution to the study of the psychometric qualities of this instrument. The results on a sample of 136 Portuguese employees show that the questionnaire presents the adequate requirements of internal consistency (.95), test-retest reliability, and convergent validity (correlation of .84 with th…

Functional role of the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein in Alzheimer's disease.

2006

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common age-related neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by neuronal loss, neurofibrillary tangle formation and the extracellular deposition of amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques. The amyloid precursor protein (APP) and the enzymes responsible for Aβ generation seem to be the base elements triggering the destructive processes. Initially, the low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP) was genetically linked to AD and later it emerged to impact on many fundamental events related to this disease. LRP is not only involved in Aβ clearance but is also the major receptor of several AD-associated ligands, e.g. apolipoprotein E and α2-m…

Guided collaboration and computers: Some of its effects on learning outcome

2004

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of different treatments on learning outcome, into a collaborative learning context. It was used a factorial design, consisting of two factors, each one with two categories. The first factor was to give students specific roles to play to guide the kinds of interactions and activities that students engage in, versus to allow students to make their own decisions about when and how to use the teacher instructions. The second one was to develop a simple hypertext, versus to write an extended essay. It was found that the factor 'specific roles' favored the learning outcome, whereas the factor 'hypertext development' was not statistically sig…
