Simulating mechanical consequences of voluntary movement upon whole-body equilibrium: the arm-raising paradigm revisited.

2001

Voluntary arm-raising movement performed during the upright human stance position imposes a perturbation to an already unstable bipedal posture characterised by a high body centre of mass (CoM). Inertial forces due to arm acceleration and displacement of the CoM of the arm which alters the CoM position of the whole body represent the two sources of disequilibrium. A current model of postural control explains equilibrium maintenance through the action of anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) that would offset any destabilising effect of the voluntary movement. The purpose of this paper was to quantify, using computer simulation, the postural perturbation due to arm raising movement. The m…

Rotationally symmetric 1-harmonic flows from D2 TO S 2: Local well-posedness and finite time blowup

2010

The 1-harmonic flow from the disk to the sphere with constant Dirichlet boundary conditions is analyzed in the case of rotational symmetry. Sufficient conditions on the initial datum are given, such that a unique classical solution exists for short times. Also, a sharp criterion on the boundary condition is identified, such that any classical solution will blow up in finite time. Finally, nongeneric examples of finite time blowup are exhibited for any boundary condition.

Nitrogen efficiency component analysis in wheat under rainfed Mediterranean conditions: effects of crop rotation and nitrogen fertilization

2004

The research was carried out in 1999-01 in a typical Sicilian semi-arid area to evaluate the effect of crop rotation and N fertilization on the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in wheat. Crop rotation were: wheat-faba bean, wheat-chickpea, wheat-pea and continuous wheat; nitrogen fertilizer rates were: 0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha. A split-plot design with three replications were used. Analysis of nitrogen efficiency components was performed according to the procedure of Higgins and Pan (1993) using grain yield, aboveground plant N, grain N and post-harvest inorganic soil N. Continuous wheat (WW) recorder the lowest grain yields while no differences were found in wheat grown after the three legum…

Sampling procedure in a willow plantation for estimation of moisture content

2015

Abstract Heating value and fuel quality of wood is closely connected to moisture content. In this work the variation of moisture content (MC) of short rotation coppice (SRC) willow shoots is described for five clones during one harvesting season. Subsequently an appropriate sampling procedure minimising labour costs and sampling uncertainty is proposed, where the MC of a single stem section with the length of 10–50 cm corresponds to the mean shoot moisture content (MSMC) with a bias of maximum 11 g kg −1 . This bias can be reduced by selecting the stem section according to the particular clone. The average difference in MSMC between the largest and smallest shoot in a stump was 31 g kg −1 .…

Optimal control of spin-systems: Applications to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Quantum Information

2016

The goal of this thesis is to apply the optimal control theory to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Quantum Information. In a first step, we introduce the different topics and the dynamics of the analyzed systems. We give the necessary tools to use the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, and also an optimization algorithm, namely GRAPE. The first work is an application of the PMP to the control of a three-spin chain with unequal couplings. We continue with the study of a classical problem called "the tennis racket effect", which is a non-linear phenomenon occuring during the free rotation of a three-dimensional rigid body. We use the results in the following chapter to determine some control laws fo…

Analysis of highly excited 'hot' bands in the SO2 molecule: ν2 + 3ν3 - ν2 and 2ν1 + ν2 + ν3 - ν2

2010

International audience; We set up a variational procedure of assignments of transitions and we applied it to the analysis very weak 'hot' bands, v(2) + 3v(3) - v(2) and 2v(1) + v(2) + v(3) - v(2), of the SO2 molecule. As the first step of the study, the 'cold' bands, 3v(3) and 2v(1) + v(3), are re-analysed and transitions belonging to those bands are assigned up to the values of quantum numbers J(max.) = 60, K-a(max.) = 19, and J(max.) = 69, K-a(max.) = 20 for the bands 3v(3) and 2v(1) + v(3), respectively. After 'cleaning' the experimental spectrum from transitions belonging to the 3v(3) and 2v(1) + v(3) bands, a variational procedure was used that allowed us to assign 230 and 115 transiti…

Alignement moléculaire par impulsions laser ultrabrèves : Mesures & Applications

2009

The interaction of an intense ultrashort laser pulse with a molecular sample leads, after the end of the pulse, to molecular alignment at specific time under field-free conditions. This thesis is dedicated to the measurements and applications of this effect. The degree of alignment is determined through the variation of the refractive index induced by the rearrangement of the molecular dipoles. A two-dimensional technique allowing to measure molecular alignment on a single-shot basis is reported in this document. The alignment is then exploited in order to determine physical quantities which are usually difficult to estimate through others methods. The "cross-defocusing technique" has been …

Etude des effets collisionnels dans les molécules tétraédriques. Applications au méthane perturbé par l'argon

1996

This thesis is devoted to the study of relaxational and collisional line-broadening processes in the first vibrational polyads of tetrahedral molecules. In a first part, the particular internal dynamics of such molecules is discussed. The second chapter reviews the literature on phenomena induced by intermolecular interactions involving this type of molecules. More theoretical aspects are developed in the second part. The so-called tetrahedral tensorial formalism adapted to the construction of Hamiltonians and transition moments of tetrahedral molecules is described. Main features of the infrared line-shapes theories and of semi-classical line-broadening and line-shifting calculations are a…
