BEAM ELEMENT UNDER FINITE ROTATIONS

2021

The present work focuses on the 2-D formulation of a nonlinear beam model for slender structures that can exhibit large rotations of the cross sections while remaining in the small-strain regime. Bernoulli-Euler hypothesis that plane sections remain plane and perpendicular to the deformed beam centerline is combined with a linear elastic stress-strain law. The formulation is based on the integrated form of equilibrium equations and leads to a set of three first-order differential equations for the displacements and rotation, which are numerically integrated using a special version of the shooting method. The element has been implemented into an open-source finite element code to ease comput…

Keypoint descriptor matching with context-based orientation estimation

2014

Abstract This paper presents a matching strategy to improve the discriminative power of histogram-based keypoint descriptors by constraining the range of allowable dominant orientations according to the context of the scene under observation. This can be done when the descriptor uses a circular grid and quantized orientation steps, by computing or providing a global reference orientation based on the feature matches. The proposed matching strategy is compared with the standard approaches used with the SIFT and GLOH descriptors and the recent rotation invariant MROGH and LIOP descriptors. A new evaluation protocol based on an approximated overlap error is presented to provide an effective an…

Ab initio SCF and CI calculations on the barrier to internal rotation of 1,3-butadiene

1972

Ab initio SCF and CI calculations employing a set of gaussian lobe functions have been carried out for the ground and excited states of five geometrical C4H6-structures occurring in the course of rotation from cis-butadiene to the trans-isomer. The rotational potential curves are discussed for the ground and excited states. Particularly the potential curve of the lowest triplet state is considered in this connection thereby substantiating quantitatively the proposed mechanism for induced dimerisation of C4H6. Possible assignments of the lowest singlet excited states in trans-butadiene are discussed.

Planar Cell Polarity Signaling in Collective Cell Movements During Morphogenesis and Disease

2012

Collective and directed cell movements are crucial for diverse developmental processes in the animal kingdom, but they are also involved in wound repair and disease. During these processes groups of cells are oriented within the tissue plane, which is referred to as planar cell polarity (PCP). This requires a tight regulation that is in part conducted by the PCP pathway. Although this pathway was initially characterized in flies, subsequent studies in vertebrates revealed a set of conserved core factors but also effector molecules and signal modulators, which build the fundamental PCP machinery. The PCP pathway in Drosophila regulates several developmental processes involving collective cel…

Validez factorial de la adaptación al español del Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey

2002

Objective. To explore the factorial structure of a Spanish version of the “Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey” (MBI-GS). Material and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 1999 among 149 municipal policemen in Tenerife, Spain. A questionnaire was applied to collect data on Professional Efficacy, Cynicism, and Burnout. Data were analyzed using factorial analysis and principal components with Varimax rotation. Results. Four factors had eigenvalues greater than 1; Factor 1 gouped Professional Efficacy items, Factor II grouped three Cynicism items. Further analysis was conducted to limit extraction to three factors. The factorial solution replicated the distribution of items i…

Relativistic simulations of rotational core collapse : II. Collapse dynamics and gravitational radiation

2002

We have performed hydrodynamic simulations of relativistic rotational supernova core collapse in axisymmetry and have computed the gravitational radiation emitted by such an event. Details of the methodology and of the numerical code have been given in an accompanying paper. We have simulated the evolution of 26 models in both Newtonian and relativistic gravity. Our simulations show that the three different types of rotational supernova core collapse and gravitational waveforms identified in previous Newtonian simulations (regular collapse, multiple bounce collapse, and rapid collapse) are also present in relativistic gravity. However, rotational core collapse with multiple bounces is only …

33S hyperfine interactions in H2S and SO2 and revision of the sulfur nuclear magnetic shielding scale

2014

Using the Lamb-dip technique, the hyperfine structure in the rotational spectra of H2(33)S and (33)SO2 has been resolved and the corresponding parameters--that is, the sulfur quadrupole-coupling and spin-rotation tensors--were determined. The experimental parameters are in good agreement with results from high-level coupled-cluster calculations, provided that up to quadruple excitations are considered in the cluster operator, sufficiently large basis sets are used, and vibrational corrections are accounted for. The (33)S spin-rotation tensor for H2S has been used to establish a new sulfur nuclear magnetic shielding scale, combining the paramagnetic part of the shielding as obtained from the…

Recognising a hand by grasp.

2000

The present study aimed to demonstrate that motor representations are used to recognise biological stimuli. In three experiments subjects were required to judge laterality of hands and forearms presented by pictures. The postures of the hands were those assumed when holding a small, medium and large sphere. In experiment 1, the sphere held in hand was presented, whereas in experiment 2 it was absent. In experiment 3, the same images, showing holding-a-sphere hands, as in experiment 1 were presented, but without forearm. In all experiments one finger of each hand could be absent. In experiment 1 recognition time was longer for those hand postures for which the corresponding grasping motor ac…

Alignement moléculaire : caractérisation et application à la mesure de thermalisation ultra-rapide et au contrôle de génération d'harmoniques

2013

The thematic of this thesis is molecular alignment. The latter is a very important topic that opens the way toward a much more thin control of many phenomenons. So, we have developed a new measurement technique of the molecular alignment along one axis that permits to preserve the sign of alignment. This one is, like other measurement techniques developed by the team, based on the measurement of the refractive index variation induced by the molecular alignment. The technique developed then also permits the molecular alignment measurement, being also an application of it because it allows the third harmonic generation. In the last study, molecular alignment is implemented to show that it bring…

Magnetic braking and damping of differential rotation in massive stars

2018

Fragmentation of highly differentially rotating massive stars that undergo collapse has been suggested as a possible channel for binary black hole formation. Such a scenario could explain the formation of the new population of massive black holes detected by the LIGO/VIRGO gravitational wave laser interferometers. We probe that scenario by performing general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of differentially rotating massive stars supported by thermal radiation pressure plus a gas pressure perturbation. The stars are initially threaded by a dynamically weak, poloidal magnetic field confined to the stellar interior. We find that magnetic braking and turbulent viscous damping via …
